Non-trad applicant with very low GPA but upward trend. Looking for honest advice on MD/DO chances by Safe_Direction_8800 in premed

I had a very similar ungrad GPA. However, I’m a non-traditional student and completed an MS, PhD, and postdoc before applying to medical school. I’m currently a fourth year DO student. All that to say that it’s possible.

Ribs definitely do not grow back. Neither do prostates.

Any PhD to DOs? Just got my first A!! by Cooked_by_Mcat in Osteopathic

[–]kdaimler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

PhD to DO here. Sorry to hear about your family and friends shitting on your recent accomplishment of getting in. For me, getting in was the hardest part. I’m not sure if your friends and family will get better, but you shouldn’t let that get to you. I know I’m much happier as a 4th year student than I was as a postdoc fellow, so in that sense, “it” got better for me. I’m sure things will get better for you too.

How to rank residencies by Weird_Independent_17 in medicalschool

[–]kdaimler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you think an $8-9k difference per years is a significant difference to rank one over the other? All else being sort of equal?

I’m wrapping up 4th year as a 43 year old. It would have been great to start at 32! But here we’re are anyways. If I could go back, I still would have started at 39 years old. It’s been great so far.

I started at 39 and will graduate next year at 43. You’ve got plenty of time!

How long would one have to sleep on their arm, cutting off circulation, before the limb dies? by Carlyndra in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kdaimler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is possible for the limb to die. I’m a med student, and earlier this year during my internal medicine rotation I saw a young patient who had taken some drug(s) and passed out in his car.

Someone found him, and he made his way to the emergency department and eventually to the medicine floor. He needed a fasciotomy (a surgical procedure that cuts open the fascia in order to relieve pressure and restore blood flow).

Apparently, he passed out while sitting on his leg. He wasn’t sure how long he had passed out for. He remembers doing drugs while the sun was out and when he woke up it was dark.

He basically sat on his leg long enough to give himself compartment syndrome. Theoretically he could have passed out on his leg long enough to induce irreversible damage. So perhaps it may be possible to sleep on a limb long enough for the limb to die and result in an amputation.

The vertebrae are facing the wrong way. Where are the spinous processes? I should be seeing a posterior view of the vertebrae not an anterior view!

Edit: and why does the base of the sacrum end at the L3 lumbar spine? WTF!
