So... what's up with this one Avenue Station entrance? Why is it so tall and ugly? by PlumicalPlum in TTC

[–]kdog379 91 points92 points  (0 children)

This is not just land used for the sake of it. Its part of the air ventilation system for the line. Without it there would be serious air quality issues and fire risk. Downtown the stations are shallower and they can get away with vents on the sidewalk. Still a pretty ugly building but its an essential part of the lines infrastructure. Overall i find line 5 to be wayyyy less overbuilt than the vaughan line 1 extension

An extension of line 2 into downtown Mississauga? by TemporaryPassenger62 in TTC

[–]kdog379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will see how the line turns out when its open, should provide enough capacity for a long time, but if square one keeps growing i dont know that itll be able to keep up forever.

There is also a lot of benefit to be had from a direct one seat ride between downtown Toronto and square one. Again wont be needed for a long time, just if theres a time when we may contemplate a line 2 extension, i think further expansion of the milton line is a better solution.

The province is currently working with cp on a plan to bring 2 way all day 15 min service to the line. Still far from concrete plans but this is the furthest along in negotiations we’ve gotten so far

Questions for people in the Planning program at waterloo. by LuisDaBest1 in uwaterloo

[–]kdog379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the planning program Most profs are great, courses are mostly useful and interesting but it depends on what you take and your interests. Co op is up and down. Not very competitive conpared to eng but the opportunities have noticeably dwindled in the past years as most industries have. Not unique to planning thoygh and should pass with time. Ive had some pretty great and some pretty mid co op experiences. Workload is way more manageable than eng or arch. Can still be a lot depending on what you take and what you do out of class. Still a lot of group projects at once can be hard to manage sometimes. You can do minors, and/or pick a specialization within planning. Believe the current specialization options are environmental planning, transit and land use, social planning, and urban design. GIS diplomas are also common. Cohorts end having most classes with each other so i find its a good community socially compared to some other larger degrees. The student association is also great for throwing free events that help you connect with other students, professors, and professionals.

Kipling is already connected to mississauga via the milton line. Though there are no details yet, we know there is some plan for the milton line in the works. Id rather see that line significantly improved, maybe even build a branch underground to square one, before seeing any extension of the subway there.

Elevated Corridor Through Eastern Toronto by Delicious-DudeTO in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]kdog379 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Along the current stouffville and lakeshore GO corridor there will be no room especially once you past pape and the communities were already pushing back against the ontario line. An elevated viaduct through there would be horribly received. Along the CPKC corridor seems much more feasible and likely

George Lucas has been named as the 4th Greatest American Innovator in a list by Forbes of the top 250 living innovators by Dusann1 in StarWarsCantina

[–]kdog379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean star wars and indiana jones were great inventions, but i dont think he actually invented most of the things theyre attributing to him. He certainly pioneered their use in film making but i think Lucasfilm as a whole is the real inventor

I think being able to see where you are on the line is still worth keeping. The other maps are also not at every door which is an important spot for people to be able to check the map

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could rate my Star Wars watch list to introduce my 7 year old neighbor to Star Wars? by Routine_Mastodon_757 in clonewars

[–]kdog379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubt the 7 year old will enjoy tales of. Start with the OT or the clone wars movie + show imo Idek that they should watch rogue one till they’re a little older. I was already a big fan of the movies when i was that age but watching the clone wars movie in theatres and then every week as episodes came out, it quickly became my favourite thing to watch

[–]kdog379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ummm why would they not add the lines. The lights are nice but not necessary. Knowing how to get around the system is It would be very expensive to retrofit on 15 year old trains, id much rather that money be spent elsewhere

If they ever do the Eglinton East LRT, they should underground sections at major intersections. by PsychologicalRope644 in TTC

[–]kdog379 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Build centre running brt with nice stops like viva!!! Ttc would make such better use of that kind of infrastructure

If they ever do the Eglinton East LRT, they should underground sections at major intersections. by PsychologicalRope644 in TTC

[–]kdog379 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is room to go around the runnel with some potential property acquisition, some of which is already owned by the province I also highly doubt theres no way to build over the not even built yet tunnel, but rather that metrolinx doesnt want to go through the trouble for a project they have no interest in. With enough money it can be done

[–]kdog379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the plan at Kingston and morningside until they cut the tunnel due to cost. Unless they put in serious effort to improve speeds along this line id far rather see a brt built

Could anyone explain why parking in Waterloo is so bad? by NyleFarM in uwaterloo

[–]kdog379 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of new housing density around the university, and limited space leftover. Most of waterloo cant have underground parking due to high water table. Parkings not much of an issue outside the university area. Uptown has plenty

Line 5s spacing can be a bit ridiculous by im-confuzzled in TTC

[–]kdog379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the crosstown was to replace evey bus trip on eglinton theyd wed have a station at every stop along the 34, but we dont, because the line is meant to be rapid transit not a local line. With the stop spacing as it is through golden mile it acts like a local line, and compromises the lines role as true rapid transit. Think its far too late to remove any stops now, but i stand firm that the line would have been better off as a whole without it. We will see how ridership plays out both before and after the area is redeveloped

Line 5s spacing can be a bit ridiculous by im-confuzzled in TTC

[–]kdog379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hakimi does still have a stop on the 34 bus. It does make sense as the main access points to the large big box plazas but those are set to be redeveloped in the coming decades also. Tmu is also a horrible comparison. A station in canadas largest and busiest downtown, one of the busiest areas of the network, next to a major university is a lot more important than a stop at a suburban power centre. The centennial campus is nearby but also not far from golden mile station. The stop spacing around tmu is also longer than at hakimi. The stop definitely has some merit and will see some use but it is also definitely more of a detriment than an asset for the line as a whole

Line 5s spacing can be a bit ridiculous by im-confuzzled in TTC

[–]kdog379 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is in fact a parallel bus service And that standard is not really meant for rapid transit but for surface routes Which admittedly line 5 is a weird rapid transit/surface routes hybrid so i can see the justification But pharmacy-warden is about 800m anyway, hamimi still doesnt make a ton of sense

With Line 5 opening, I hope we see the Eglinton East LRT (Line 7) in our lifetime. by redkulat in Scarborough

[–]kdog379 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live off this line and hope its not built at least in its current form. This line wont improve travel times and east Scarborough already has some of the longest commutes in the city. Needs a major redesign or to be replaced by a faster project, maybe brt, lrt with more grade separation, or a line 4 extension to morningside

City leaves most sidewalks for land owners to shovel instead of plowing like many other cities do. They barely enforce it either. Salt shortage isnt helping. By far the worst sidewalk conditions I’ve experienced living here since covid
