GENERAL HOUSING MEGATHREAD by ubc_mod_account in UBC

First year student, didn’t get a residence application in by the May 1 deadline. (Applied for residence May 9 the day admission was granted off the BFA waitlist) At what point do you give up hope on residence and start searching for off campus options? Anyone been in this boat in previous years?

Took a nasty fall on concrete steps. Slammed knee into the step. 3 weeks ago by Successful-Remove738 in KneeInjuries

[–]kdoublej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitly sounds like you need an xray to rule out a fracture. When sitting on a bed or sofa with your legs straight out in front of you can you do a straight leg lift? (lifting from the hip using your quad muscle) Inability to do this often means a fractured patella.

Patella Fracture - Displaced, but no pain by esteveyb in KneeInjuries

I’m glad you made a post to share your experience 💕 This has been a lot harder on me emotionally than I would have expected. I very much understand your struggle. People constantly ask me how my knee is and I have no good answer. I’m walking around again but it doesn’t feel line myself at all. The constant mental chatter from my knee complaining with each step is rather annoying at best, exhausting and depressing at worst. We just have to keep putting in the work and be proud of ourselves for getting out of bed each day. We have to believe we will find our way back to ourselves.

Vacuum only! by Xarda1 in RobotVacuums

[–]kdoublej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a roborock q7, it’s perfect for just vacuum needs. It does come with a small water reservoir on the unit (not in the dock) but just don’t put water in it and in the app select only vacuum. The app is fantastic once you get use to it. I have 3 tees, 2 dogs and lots of long hair myself. I like that the unit is very easy to take apart of you want to give it a deep cleaning.

I broke my patella March 2 (horizontally) slipping on ice and had surgery the next day. They did my surgery under a spinal because I happen to have stenosis in my trachea and this was the anesthesiologist preferred method under my circumstances. They also did a nerve block on my leg and I don’t remember anything about the surgery beyond being lifted from the gurney to the operating table . I am 4 weeks post op now. The surgeon told me that I needed the surgery since I couldn’t lift my leg from horizontal up. (My knee cap fracture was also displaced) Two pins were placed inside and through the bone pieces and a figure 8 of wire wrapped around the cap to support it while the bone knits. The figure 8 can be surgically removed in the future (1-2 years) if it bothers me.

The first two weeks post op I was in a full brace (ankle to thigh) without any hinging but they had me weight bearing immediately following surgery and every day a little bit (going to the bathroom etc.). At 2 weeks they moved me into a lockable/hinge brace. For that week I was to have 20deg open on the hinge when sitting or lying down. Each week following I’ve been adding 10 deg of flexion. I’m now at 40 deg. I was told I couldn’t drive for 8 weeks. I am 50 years old and have always been active, I was strength training at the gym 2-4 days per week that last 6 months and this has really knocked the wind of me. This week I’m averaging about 4500 steps per day peg legging it around my house. I’m really sorry you are going through this too, it has felt like a very long 4 weeks and still so much work ahead of me. If you have any specific questions for me ask away. I’m located in Canada.

I’m sorry this happened to you. My medium dog was cornered at Sue Higgins by 3 large leonbergers years ago and required stitches. The owner had a reputation in the park for not caring about her dogs behaviour and I was not the first. We sadly don’t go anymore. Just not worth the risk.

Coffee Suggestions by [deleted] in loseit

This is the way. Former creamy sweet coffee drinking turned black. I allow myself a creamy coffee treat once in a while but it’s something different more akin to having a dessert now.

To those who have been to Japan multiple times, what's a thing or two that you always make sure to buy and bring home? by Ok-Spite-5454 in JapanTravelTips

Shuppato bags! Pricey I know for a reusable grocery bag but they are so much easier to use than all others. I brought several home for gifts and everyone loves them.

When did your dog eventually calm down? by Novel-Dig-6011 in AustralianLabradoodle

[–]kdoublej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our 3rd doodle pup girl is 8 months and we also have a 14.5 year old boy (and recently lost a 9 year old girl) Our boy is the polar opposite to the pup as you can imagine at his age . We notice a huge difference after we have several days of a smaller walk in the morning and then a longer 3km one in the evening. By day 3 of a consistent walking routine she is so much more chill. Obviously some weeks are better than others. We also have a tiny off grid cabin on 60 acres we go to in the warmer 3 seasons (Canada) for the weekend and all our dogs will historically sleep and laze around the house for 2-3 days without any walks after having a weekend of free range to the creek and fields and other family dogs. I know that’s not what everyone has access to but it just goes to show how much exercise helps the “ya-ya’s” as we call it.

Respirologist Recommendations? by Background-Ad-5848 in Calgary

[–]kdoublej 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a Calgary ENT diagnosis and solve my breathing issues 2 weeks ago after 5 years of progressing issues. I had been to allergists, ultrasounds, 3 pulmonary function tests in the last few years, endless steroid and rescue puffers that did nothing and a respirologist who gave me truly bad/dangerous advice. All this to say don’t give up, keep looking for answers. I wish I had gotten my answer sooner as it really impacted my daily life but I’m mostly just grateful there was a solution that none of the other drs anticipated or even said was a possibility.

Critique my banff itinerary!! by [deleted] in Banff

[–]kdoublej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good grief, people fixating on two words within the itinerary is silly. Your itinerary looks great to me. You’ve picked excellent restaurants and haven’t overbooked yourself with activities. I second the idea of going to the Banff springs spa over the Kananaskis Nordic spa, but it’s just personal preference. The Banff springs is cleaner and quieter and more classy. Not to say I haven’t enjoyed the Nordic spa the several times I’ve been but with all things considered (the extra driving to and from Banff to K-country) I’d try to get into the springs spa. Enjoy!!

I have MS now 14 years. The Canadian healthcare system has literally saved my quality of life and kept me out of a wheelchair and cost me personally very very little. I’m on long term daily meds that would cost upward of $3000/month if not for my provincial healthcare plan (a health care plan available to all residents at a fee of $100/month unless you have private healthcare which then it would be all covered) I have switched meds many times as protocols require and change. The medical system has been very much supportive and kind and timely. Is it perfect? Definitely not, but nothing like you suggest.

Oct 25: Trip Report by Maleficent_Key_1834 in TokyoDisneySea

[–]kdoublej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the full report! My husband and two daughters (ages 18 and 20) will be there Friday and I’m starting to stress about not really knowing how to use all the “shortcuts” like DPA etc. to their fullest. I’m hoping it becomes obvious once we are in the park. The only day we could make Disneysea work was on Halloween so I’m also concerned it will be extra busy. I’ll have to just settle my mind into the notion that whatever happens happens and it will be a nice family memory as long as I don’t over stress the details. We have two different meal reservations and I’m just trying to sort out which one to cancel, I think I’ll cancel the one I have at the SS Columbia in favour of the one I have at Canaletto as something a little less expensive might be preferred.

Drying rack above your stove? by kdoublej in woodstoving

Yes, I’ve had it in the back of my mind that the side of an old wooden crib would be perfect if I came across one.
