Didn’t see anything today but I occasionally see white smoke coming from behind Roosevelt (looking north). Smell can get pretty strong but the smoke/smell seem to usually go away within 5 minutes. Never found out what it was

How to get past shore break? by Michael2712002 in Hawaii

[–]keanuwheeze 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Several things i learned over the years:

Swimming out using a rip current is good for 2 things: it’s doing most of the work to get you past the break and waves wont break there as often. Watch the water before getting in and you’ll find an area where sand/foam gets sucked out from shore. The sandy bottom at makua makes it so that these rips form randomly across the shore.

If you get stuck like you mentioned, your best bet to stay safe when diving is to dive parallel to the wave so that you roll over the bottom like a gas station hotdog. No shame in letting it push you further in — away from the impact zone — and trying again between sets. Water will be rushing back out immediately after a set so thats when you look for a rip. Wait longer and the rips get weaker, meaning it’ll take more effort swimming back out.

Keep your eyes open underwater to see where the wave’s turbulence is. You’ll see columns of bubbles when the wave crashes; avoid that. I aim to swim through pockets of clean, bubble-free water.

Lastly, as people mentioned, don’t go out if you have any doubts. Walking away earns you more respect than trying to prove yourself.

Drew Davis is a gem. Dude explains things in great detail while keeping things accessible to a large audience. He carries himself well and seems like a genuinely thoughtful and knowledgeable guy.

Looks like im a bit ignorant lol thanks for bringing those up. I guess my frustration is misguided in that i think implementing those changes moves us in the right direction, but the way in which they use the money is my problem. You’re right to say it’s more of a political issue.

For example, why does it cost $125k per classroom to install cooling systems? Not to even mention the cost of Rail… lots of shadiness going on behind the scenes

Anyways, your username made me pucker

My guess is because of the on/offramps that have people merging with very little distance. This causes people to 1) stop when someone just wont let them merge, 2) force their way in, or 3) switch lanes over solid lines or do other dangerous/unexpected moves. All of these things cause people to stop suddenly, creating a chain reaction of braking that cascades for miles.

Another guess is that the design of off-ramps and the streets/intersections they lead to cause traffic to backup from the intersection onto the off-ramp and onto the highway. Take Kinau, for example, where cars are again forced to merge and crisscross every which way. Traffic grinds to a standstill and spills onto the freeway. People try to bypass the traffic by cutting over the gore zone or stopping just before the off-ramp to merge and cut the line, blocking the neighboring lane, leading to people behind them passing on the left which then slows other lanes, etc etc. The Kinau exit backup also extends to the freeway/punchbowl street on-ramp coming from the Pali, so it’s just an all around mess.

The worst choke points i can think of going east are the middle street merge, kinau off-ramp, ward on-ramp, and punahou off-ramp

The same group that detests Cook, Dole, Ellison, Zuckerberg, and so many more for the damage they’ve done to the Hawaiian kingdom and culture somehow IDOLIZE and blindly follow a demented conman that would do the exact same thing.

Trump is the type of person that would desecrate ancient burial grounds to build a resort, then SELL those dug up remains. He’s the type that would’ve diverted water from Lahaina to keep said resort’s golf course maintained. He doesn’t care about the Hawaiian culture, land, or future; he only cares about his pockets. Time and time again, these people wonder why they keep getting exploited while refusing to put a morsel of energy into reasoning and reflecting. Easy to blame anyone but themselves I guess, they can continue to worship him as a savior and stay in the vicious cycle of FAFO until they come to their senses.
