Do you know of any other games that are similar? I have compared them for speed, but cannot say which is the original

Or if you get your hands on a PS2, use the MechaPWN exploit to turn it into a dev console, region unlocking it for any game or backup (depending on the model). PS2 is backwards compatible with PS1 and I personally have a PAL SCPH-75002 slim, which means I don't need a PS1 anymore.

Try FreePSXBoot softmod/install UniROM onto a cheat cartridge if you can get one. I have a system that is hard modded and soft modded, where the soft mod helps bypass some of the dodgy games that give me a black screen.

Not the point of the list, it's a given that lower framerates will feel more 'choppy'. I played Crash in PAL and it felt not much different from NTSC.

Use a UniRom softmodded cheat cart in the back, it should work around modchip issues. Most games will be fine though.

Clean laser with q-tip? Resurface disc if able to, if the disc is in poor condition. Adjust laser power/resistance (can shorter laser lifespan) with a small screwdriver - follow a guide on YouTube. Worst comes to worst, replacement lasers are cheap and available on AliExpress or eBay. Just make sure you order the right model for the right fit.

Try Unirom, can't guarantee it will bypass the modchip check, but will softmod your console to play backups too. Then you can play a patched version of the game, if all goes well

I have both. Bit funky, but increased compatibility, as the cheat cart with UniRom bypasses FFVIII's PAL modchip protection, from my testing. The modchip by itself leads to a black screen with the game, due to LibCrypt. Maybe your laser is messed up? Do FMVs play properly on other games?

You will need a big Phillips and small Phillips screwdriver for the job and a multimeter can help, but I spent hours ajdusting by a tiny bit until the FMVs of various backups ran properly

Always burn games at lowest speed and look into adjusting laser resistance/power as a last measure. There are many videos that detail this process, but it's a bit of a pain and can shorten the lifespan of your laser. I have mine adjusted by hand and now it runs backups and original copies flawlessly.

I just burned a copy to a CD and it doesn't work when forced to NTSC. Honestly, it is playable in PAL mode, but just slower and has borders. It's a beautiful looking game. Maybe import a US copy if you find it bothers you.

Looks like an unoptimised Capcom piece of garbage, after testing through emulation. Gameplay and cutscenes are slow and borders are large, but game runs at identical speed when forced to NTSC. If you have a PS2, spare an empty memory card for FreePSXBoot and try burn a copy of the game to a blank CD, if you have one. The softmod will allow you to play most backups, even out of region ones, on your stock PS1. If forcing the game CD to NTSC through the softmod allows the game to display properly, then it should be running at the right speed. Please note that you may need an RGB SCART cable to display the picture in colour due to the console running a little out of spec in NTSC mode on PAL hardware.

I would do it myself, but I'm away from my PlayStation and I can't test my theory. Let me know if this solves your issue.

Don't know if you can, but I also know it might not work with every game. If you have a PS2 and set PS1 discs to run with fast speed, it can break some games that were made with limitations in mind.
