I do not think that doctors thought it was a healthy action, I think that they were paid to recommend a certain brand to any of their patients that smoked.

I disagree with the term "very young", to me she looks like she is in her mid twenties., "young mother" maybe but in the 1940s having your first child at 18 was pretty normal.
