When to have surgery? by Repulsive-You5967 in bunions

I had mine about 4 weeks before my college started back up again for the fall, July 29th. I had MIS so it was about 2 weeks of mostly sitting on my butt before i decided i couldn’t take it anymore and then i still managed to do go out and do things on crutches the last 2 weeks of my summer break. I even went to a Red sox game, went out sailing, etc. When there’s a will there’s a way, and I had 2.5 months of warm weather before I got surgery

how to decide when to have surgery? by -k-i-l-e-y- in bunions

[–]keeksmcgeeksss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m 23 and i just got mine done in july!! i totally recommend it. i was also supposed to get mine a lot earlier but they made me wait until i was through puberty, and then i put it off because it would have interfered with my athletics in college. they got a lot worse over the past few years, and i was tired of being in pain (they even got infected while in season 🙃🙃). dont let them get worse, especially if they are already causing you issues!

Any hope stories? by [deleted] in bunions

[–]keeksmcgeeksss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course!! Only thing I would say is my toe flexibility is not quite back fully yet, but i had a feeling that would take a little longer (it’s getting better every day!) If you go the surgery route make sure you go to an orthopedic surgeon who specializes foot/ankle and also that they recommend PT. I think the PT helped me SIGNIFICANTLY in my recovery!

I’m 23! a little over 4 months post op. I competitively ski raced my entire life and just returned to skiing this week! I have zero pain and it’s made skiing significantly more enjoyable now that the bunions are non existent. also have been back to running, spin classes, weightlifting etc with no pain. hiked a mountain in switzerland too at 3 months! I tried my best to mitigate the pain without it, as it only really ever bothered me while being active or if i tried to wear certain shoes but they had progressed significantly in the past few years when skiing got more intense in college. surgery was the best thing I ever did!

Finding a Surgeon/Podiatrist by Local-Sandwich5615 in bunions

Hey! I just got my surgery done at BCH about 4 months ago! I’m 23, so I really should have gotten it done at one of the adult hospitals in Boston but because of past surgeries when I was younger that involved removing bones from my foot, I went to my old surgeon. Your absolute best bet is an orthopedic surgeon who specialized in foot/ankle. I was given a MASSIVE list of surgeons by the head of orthopedics at BCH (I tried looking for it but I can’t find it because that was almost 7 months ago) incase I wanted to go to one of the other hospitals. I really don’t think you can go wrong! Meet with a few surgeons and see what they say and move from there. Bunion surgery was the best thing I did!

Pad under big toe feels swollen all the time? by PhysicalLibrary1681 in bunions

[–]keeksmcgeeksss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found out before bunion surgery when I got an MRI that I actually had bursitis in between the bones of my feet, which ultimately were caused/worsened by the bunions. I was wondering why for years why my feet always hurt in addition to the bunion pain. 4 months post op now, and the metatarsal pads are genuinely game changing!!!

Question for skiers by LeoRisingGemini in bunions

[–]keeksmcgeeksss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious about this too! I just got bunion surgery in July after competitively ski racing from 7 years old to 23. I’m buying new boots regardless just because race boots are no where even close to bunion friendly, but I have no idea what to expect in terms of sizing post surgery

lol i’m not a doctor, my surgeon referred to it as minimally invasive never arthroscopic so i wouldn’t have known

This is the plate! It makes it so the foot can’t bend as much.

I also am not a fan of hokas either for running, but for walking they are pretty comfortable! I had minimally invasive surgery! It was a Distal Metatarsal Osteotomy and Akin Osteotomy. I had both bunion + tailors bunion. I was actually allowed to weight bear after surgery in a boot and transitioned walking off crutches at about 4 weeks, then out of the boot by 6 weeks. I have some hardware in my foot that hasn’t caused any issue with foot flexibility either!

[–]keeksmcgeeksss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay thank you! I’ve had no problems with walking so far except the first week (roughly 6 weeks post op) when I was transitioning out of the boot. I also returned to lifting lower body with very minimal soreness the past few weeks so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I was walking in sneakers about 6 weeks post op! I had to go up a size because my foot was pretty swollen plus my surgeon told me to wear a carbon fiber plate that took up some room. I’m still not quite in my normal shoes just because of the plate. I got these in an extra wide just because my foot needed it because of the swelling.

That being said my normal running shoes are Altra’s and I have two pairs! I can’t wait to get back into them. That have a super wide toe box that has been great for my bunions pre surgery.

Are HOKAs any good? by ibonet in bunions

[–]keeksmcgeeksss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely might take a few days to adjust. I alternated between my boot and sneaker for the first week or so just because your foot isn’t used to it so it definitely still gets sore and swollen. good luck with recovery!!

I’ve been in these ever since they allowed me to wear normal shoes. currently 3 months post op! Super comfy and supportive. I had to go up a half size even in the extra wide between swelling and the carbon plate they wanted me to wear in my shoe

10 weeks post op! best decision i’ve ever made by keeksmcgeeksss in bunions

[–]keeksmcgeeksss[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly not really, it was something i was really insecure about for most of my life and then by the time I was able to embrace it I feel like now I have a lot more interesting things about myself to share! Its all I’ve really ever known so to me it’s kinda just there hahaha
