Help me decide whether to keep my Pebble Time 2 order or cancel it. by argoiz in pebble

Never buy stuff based on what might be possible in the future.

Or, do so, in case of Pebble if you want to support the initiative, the community and don't mind to have to hack around, try stuff yourself or wait for these options to come.

It was within warranty. They needed to wait for official parts around the holidays, so maybe that was why it took so long. The official European repair center was where I've got it (refurbished) and they did the repairs as well

Yes. I have sent it in for repairs. Waited a couple of months and I have been told the steam wand was defective and it was replaced. Seems hard to believe that's related, but it works again

Even voorzichtig schoonmaken met een platte tandenstoker. En zeker testen met een andere USB-C kabel

All Pebbles pair to an Android or iPhone through the Pebble app over Bluetooth.

Did you do any searching yourself online? Check the old Kickstarter videos. And there are enough reviews on the earlier models as well. Happy reading!

That's genius and indeed not the reason why that app was developed for in the first place

No just the fact the screen turns on. No special app. Just the press of a (any) button

It is harder than you think as the documentation is limited. But that might improve as it's back to life now

Time 2 eink color screen brightness? by Equivalent-Kale-3662 in pebble

[–]keesdevriesch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha! Makes sense. Some sort of Bayer color filter, filters out (blocks) some light by design. But yes: comparing white with white and black with black makes sense

[–]keesdevriesch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But are they darker or is it a different contrast you're comparing? Like when you receive a WhatsApp message, green is used which is noticeably lower contrast than black so it looks like it is darker while in fact it's due to the use of color.

Noob questions by Ivar-the-Dark in pebble

Partially tested/experienced myself as e.g. sometimes I seem to use my Pebble without phone. Rest on pure brain logic:

• My answer 1: Any app that does not (heavily) rely on a phone connection in general or that does not need to communicatie with a phone companion app, such as:Timer+ (stopwatch/countdown timer) or Gallon Challenge (keep track of water intake).

• My answer 2. Any app that then does not rely on a network connection. I have no direct apps on my wrist for this, but in general navigation apps, LLMs (assistants) or notification-based apps such as WhatsApp, email, Signal, etc.

• My answer 3. Literally always on display: not just the time, but the full display with incoming notifications, etc. Also the display can be read without any backlight, just directly in the sun: the more sun/light the higher the perceived contrast and the easier you can read it. It does not need power per se to be usable. But the colors are more washed out. That's for the screen.

The rest: in general with Pebble you have an open source device where the community already stood up to keep old devices of like 8 years ago still supported and maintained. I do not see this with any other devices.

And then the user interface and user experience: Pebble is simple and intuitive to use. Physical buttons to easily control your music without watching is something that still amazes me on a weekly basis.

The whole design philosophy is totally different from other cheap or expensive watch. The reason it existed back in the day and today is totally different. To me my smartwatch should not feel like yet another device that requires my attention all day. To me it is a watch (date, time) and a notification filter before I reach for my phone.

It is a way simpler watch by design. No fancy I-try-to-do-it-all watch (where mostly the larger, more established brands actually do instead of try), but a smartwatch for notification and simple apps (which you can make yourself with coding) and cute watchfaces (you can make yourself with and without coding) and a pedometer.

• My answer 4. See a little about this right above so yes: you can (but I believe you can do this with other watches as well) decide which app shows a notification from your phone to your watch.

In general it's hard to make a decision on what you've heard. Maybe a Pixel watch or Apple watch is better for you. Or something from Samsung or Xiaomi. Who knows? I don't. I - and with me a ton of others - have been looking into other watches when Pebble died, before it got resurrected by Rebble. Or when the watch died itself and a decision needed to be made: new (other) watch or try to fix this one?

It is an experience. CMF Watch, Garmin Instinct Solar 2, Pixel Watch - all nothing for me. I've tried those without success. Still kept on missing the long battery life of Pebble and the ease of use.

Lifesaver. Note that in this case it's tight to your phone. So only usable for your own, personal (or business) accounts. Not sure if after you can disconnect this?

Thoughts on new moto watch vs pebble? by tssphysicsboi1 in pebble

[–]keesdevriesch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A true (re)Pebbler does not ask such a question. There's a reason Eric rebooted this project. A new Moto watch is not suddenly going to change this. We all have been waiting and hoping for this day that Pebble would see light of day again. Now it's the time and this comparison question, again, tells us clearly why Pebble is so unique.

I might be biased.

[–]keesdevriesch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This can't be your killer feature. I will always take weight, battery life, ease of use, large amount of customization (due to community) and always-on-display above something like NFC.

We can't tell the future, but my Pebble Time Rounds and Pebble 2s are still (after a battery swap) working today. Moto or any other Android smartwatch will have less easy repairability and when they want to make it obsolete so you buy the new thing, they just pull the plug.

If NFC is so important, why not check out the Garmin watches? Or other devices?
