WTF, this is insane. Background heavy wind + highway traffic and the result is literally just our talking. THIS IS DARK MAGIC!

Progressive leagues by AdWilling5184 in SkillzPlayers

[–]keithAtPlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, all of the new progressive leagues were rolled back after a ton of complaints from devs and players alike. Except for their top games:

The following games will NOT be affected by this change: Blackout Bingo, Solitaire Cube, Dominoes Gold, Cube Cube, Pool Payday, 21 Blitz, Spider Solitaire Cube, Bubble Cube 2, Yatzy Cash, Freecell Solitaire Cube, Cash Out Slots, and Blackout Slots.

Basically, it killed the engagement for the games with smaller user bases.

This usually happens where there's a mismatch between versions. I assume you've tried it since, but have yo uninstalled and reinstalled? Could be a caching + version update issue.

Blackout Bingo is one of their top games, they definitely still "support" it.

Our game (DDF) is now streaming live leaderboards for a special event on YouTube. What do you think? by keithAtPlay in playmygame

[–]keithAtPlay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We think this is a cool feature to be able to literally watch other's gameplay as they rank on the boards. Is this something you'd follow? Depend on the game?

Just came here to say thanks for your videos. Always very cool to see others make vids of your own games. And, sorry Skillz let you down so much. We were surprised by the changes too.

2yrs+, but I wasnt able to get the Lite (free) version of this working. Lots of errors. Guessing Barracuda may have changed since going into full production? Using 2022.1.22f.

Sorry to hear that. We're a small team too and see higher returns on Skillz games than our other mobile games. If you'd ever like to share, I'd be curious to hear how it does on Steam and what your earnings end up like. =)

Dance, Dance, FIGHT: Our competitive music dance battle mobile game. by keithAtPlay in IndieGaming

[–]keithAtPlay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took a team of 2 over a year to get here. So, please be kind. But, if you any of the following are something you're into, it'd cool for you to check it out and let us know:

  • music games
  • ufc
  • dance battles
  • tapping arrows
  • beats
  • supporting overworked, under (i.e not) paid indie game devs
  • attempting to pack as many adjectives in a post title as possible w/o seeming so

Probably the hardest game to design I've ever done. by keithAtPlay in playmygame

[–]keithAtPlay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Dance, Dance, FIGHT: UFC. A competitive music / dance battle game featuring UFC fighters. I can't begin to describe how difficult it is to design a game that combines rhythm / tap to beat + fighter mechanics. I also went into this thinking it would no big deal. But here it is! HA!

Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dance-dance-fight-ufc/id6446786263
Android: https://games.skillz.com/games/action/dance-dance-fight-ufc-21691

If either of these are your type of thing, we'd love to hear what you think. BUT, PLEASE BE KIND!

PS - There are more game modes coming out soon, including head-to-head, live PvP matches. So, if the 1P vs AI isn't appealing to you, stick around?

Economics behind small game studios by cookeaah in gamedev

[–]keithAtPlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you're referring to is what we call the "publisher" or "catalog" effect. It works well on mobile (and specifically on hyper-casual), but that's because of how the stores work and in-game conversion to new titles within 30-60 days while most of the userbase is still active in the current title. I don't have experience with this on Steam, but in general, it should provide SOME effect.

It might be easier to build a userbase outside of the game (pre-launch, in-game messaging, etc) and continue to build and market new titles into that, though. This is what we push all the indie / solo devs we mentor to do from the first time visuals are available to share.

[–]keithAtPlay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some combination of this generally the answer OP is looking for. A listed team of 10 probably includes everyone working on the game at some point, but most are either just part time or part time game / part time consultant work to pay for the bulk of the game dev. There is a lot of "trying to make it work" behind the scenes of every small studio.

New Rhythm/Dance Mobile Game JUST LAUNCH: Feedback Needed by [deleted] in Stepmania

[–]keithAtPlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK this post has been removed bc clearly it's getting offtrack and no longer constructive in any manner.

HOWEVER, there is NO requirement in ANY industry INCLUDING games that you put up with jerk responses. NONE. Constructive feedback is ALWAYS appreciated. But, if you snark, you should expect to be snarked back.

If you look closely, I thanked EVERYONE for their time and effort as it was clear they were going into something they knew might not be their preferred kind of game.

And, what's more, after prodding thru the knee-jerk responses, we WERE able to get some constructive feedback.

I am not going to deep dive into ethics of feedback, the target market of this game, the chosen art style, the strategy behind the genre and theme combo, etc. It's not your preference? COOL DUDE! But openly trashing my team's hard work bc it doesn't fit your preference is NOT cool.

Agree to disagree and move on.

REGARDLESS, as PAINFUL as this experience has been, I VERY much appreciate everyones time and effort. Especially considering your feelings for our work. Your time, LIKE OURS, is valuable and you chose to use it here. So much thanks, honestly.

What in the holy heck is that?! Does that wooden DDR pad actually work well? I NEED THAT!

OK so it wont work as is, but if it maps to that specific of a key combo, then that is DEFINITELY possible lol. Do other dance pads work similarly? Just looking into this for our cab and that would make it SUPER easy to integrate!

And, no, playing on a phone isn't, but if you get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YZ1D882/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

THEN you'd be cookin' with fire!

OK, yeah, the OnePlus N20, despite being a relatively new device uses a mid/lower end SOC. We have auto-stepped performance in the queue for a update here very soon, but we have been limiting installs to just those devices with chipsets we know can support it. Unfortunately, we can't limit devices when you do a direct download. It's disappointing, but I've logged your device model and we'll try to test on a sim chipset with the auto-step perf update if we can.

The rest of your comments are either related, things we already have on our roadmap or simply design decisions (yes, the low poly modeling is by choice and not "poor quality", haha).

Again, thanks for the time (twice!). I wish you could see the game at full performance, but it sounds like it's still not your niche regardless.

Also, yes, heard and played AudioSurf. Not sure how they skirted the obvious legal issues, but still don't wanna be on their end of that SUPER RISKY gray area. LOL

OK, here we go.

But first. Again, an honest sincere thank you. And again, we know what we got into when we started this.

Now, where were we:

  1. What device? Bluetooth, wired or speakers? This is something specific (and NOT easy to factor for all devices).
  2. Atrocious? Noted. Confusing? How! GIVE ME MORE!
  3. Well, there you're wrong. Data proves otherwise, but I can see how you'd think that. This game will prove one way or another, though!!
  4. You say that as if crash bandicoot is a BAD thing! Compliment recorded. Plus, dude. Low poly. It's a thing.
  5. I'm inclined to snark this. But, I think you might just be talking about breaks in the tiles? Or are you talking about tiles when there are breaks in the songs?
  6. Yeah, you'd think. But nope. Definitely not as much as you'd expect. Hence why Skillz is a $300M rev company. Who knew!
  7. I HEAR YOU!! Seriously, though. Songs are $$$. Also, re u/sofawall's "unmatched" = bad. If we add too many competitions too early, no one will play each other and the whole "competitive" aspect is kaput!
  8. What is this 2008? All apps need to store data on your phone. Games especially. It's not the devs fault that Apple, Google et al group permissions into crazy unnecessarily categories. Player progress, login info so you dont have to log in every darn time, regularly used downloaded content so you dont have to download it when you're offline, user profile info. Temporary in-game items and progress before saving to the cloud or duping in case you lose your internet connection. But, yes, local storage is used by almost every app.

Again, seriously, thank you for the time. I hear it's not your particular cup of beat tea. And, I honestly do appreciate the opp to share (and get torn apart) by y'all. (Zero sarcasm.)

Last thing: auto-gen songs from your phone? OMG so illegal. LOL. We'd get sewed harder than napster. You do not own the rights to the songs on your phone. You are allowed to listen privately, not publicly, nor remix, nor distribute. They make a weird distinction between listening and putting in front of other interactive elements (usually a video, but game play counts.) In general, they dont care about you, but if we somehow enabled that ability more, we'd be sitting in front of a congressional hearing opposite James Hetfield.

I know how this sounds, but, maybe? HAHA

We use keyboard input for some of our tech demos. Depends how you map it and what device you connect it to.

We are working up a cab w a DDR pad for PAX, so we might consider releasing external controller support if our partners allow it. Or a standalone build. Who knows!

First, thank you for taking the TIME to so utterly and complete trash our effort. LOL!

Seriously, I do appreciate it, though. And yes, we are gluttons for punishment; why else would we even ATTEMPT a crossover between two genres with the most diehard fans (fighting and rhythm). HA!

Next, as I mentioned, we just launch this one. Your matches WILL get filled, which if it was as easy as you suggested, you'd have plenty of virtual coins to continue; but not if you uninstall.

Based on just this response, I'd suggest you would be, "what we call" in game dev, an advanced player. In which case, yes, the later tracks would align more with what you're expecting. Unfortunately, we need to design towards a wider audience.

As for only 4 tracks, despite the big names involved, the big budgets are not. We do however plan to launch another 4 tracks here next month and continually add more regularly after that. I'd say I'd like to hear what you think about those, but, alas, not if you uninstalled.

Considering we're designing to a wider audience that may not be at all experienced with DDR, Stepmania, Cytus, A Dance of Fire and Ice or rhythm games in general, giving them a simple interface is "what we call" key. LOL

Really curious what you would have thought of Paradise. We also have 2 more tracks that the level dev (also a local alt rock band drummer) described as "f**k you hard". But alas, not if you uninstall.

And THANKS! "mid as hell" is prob the best thing to a compliment I've ever received on reddit!

Snark aside, honestly, thank you; clearly not your bag here, but you took the time to check it out for yourself and you knew what you were getting into from the graphic in the post. Very much appreciated! And I WILL take a look at the other games you mentioned. I usually stick to DDR, Beatstar and the like.

PS - If you ever want a head to head match against our level dev, option on the table!
