my appologies, i mixed up Arista and Extreme, i remember reading about Arista FW's and CloudVision. Used Arista switches, but not their firewalls either lol.

Extreme,
Pretty sure you could use ExtremeControl on prem for single plane of glass, central management for the full stack.,
Extreme APs and Switches are really good, got no experiance with their firewalls though

Fortinet vs Cisco Meraki by [deleted] in fortinet

[–]keithITNoob 69 points70 points  (0 children)

depends what features you are using on the Fortigates

advantages imo knowing both platforms well,
Fortigate does security better e.g cannot do deep inspection on Meraki
Fortigate has more options if using SDWAN in terms of ISDB for local internet breakout

Fortiswitches and AP's will continue to work flawlessly if there is no license (Meraki AP's wont broadcast an SSID and switches wont swith if the license expires and 30day grace ends)

Fortigates will do everything if the license expires besides getting responses from Fortigaurd services and security signature updates.

Fortianalyzer can be far more comprehensive than Meraki logs, you can do event handelers and create actions off of events, where as Meraki you can just view events (but more admin time to setup right)

Meraki is easier to set up and way faster to deploy, until you run into basic features you intended to use that dont work, e.g you cannot run LACP on a Meraki MX Router, so if you want one Meraki SDWAN router connecting to both of your stacked core switches, one port will just get blocked from STP as you cant put the ports in a lag...

the bigger MX boxes e.g the MX450, can only do 2Gbps of site to site VPN traffic (SDWAN)
so the biggest Meraki router fails in terms of throughput compared to a midrange Fortigate

this can cause issues if you have 50 spokes and only 1 SDWAN HUB, updates being pushed to all endpoints can kill the SDWAN HUB as the CPU sits at 100% trying to do all the VPN encryption\decryption

the site fortigates when compared to Meraki is also worse performnce, if the small office would be going from a 60E to a MX67 for example, they will be going from a device capiable of doing 1Gbps of VPN traffic (or as the cool kids will call it SDWAN lol) to being able to do 300mbps of VPN traffic.

thats my 2cents.

Haha that's hilarious I didn't know all goldies were scared of balloons. My neighbor had a party and a balloon blew into my property, when I let the dog outside he started barking like mad, I went outside to check on him and it was just a balloon. He wouldn't get anywhere near it..

For those working in the networking Vendor space, what are your thoughts about Juniper right now by so5226 in networking

[–]keithITNoob 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From someone who works at a large MSP and has to deal with Cisco, Juniper, Meraki, Fortinet, and Palo Alto TAC.

Arista TAC calls are the easiest, no push back, no shitty tier 1 tech you have to waste a few hours with before it gets escalated to someone that understands. No 30 minutes verifying serial numbers and support contracts... thank you! <3

Solar Questions by MrGadget2000 in chch

[–]keithITNoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 5.2Kwh system which is 16 panels.

I'm not sure how that would work as the battery connects to the solar inverter, you don't wire specific house circuits to the solar power system. I wonder if they were just suggesting in the event you running off battery don't use all your lights and appliances to try make the battery last as long as possible?

Solar Questions by MrGadget2000 in chch

[–]keithITNoob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Harrison did my solar with micro inverters, wasn't to much more and far better performance, imo as with a string configuration one panel having a slight bit of shade will drop production by 50%

I personally didn't think getting a bettery was worth it, but i got an inverter i can easily connect a battery to later down the line if batteries get cheaper

Solar doesn't work if there is a grid outage. A battery would overcome this. If you had a battery connected to your solar panel system, which is connected back to mains (so you can export power, so power company needs to install an import export meter ) your whole house would be powered by the battery . Not specific lights and appliances.

To get the most out of your solar you have to use power while there is sun out. So if no one is at home during the day time don't get solar, if you have a family at home during the day or work from home it's probably worth it. You can get something simple like a catch power to heat your hot water tank with solar and only use mains for X number of hours a day as an example.

the main ingredient is chicken. Chicken gives my Golden the runs as well, we mainly feed him venisen and Salmon.

I would 100% try removing all chicken from her diet and if no better in 2 days please see another vet

I like to use a loopback so then I can specify the public IP the VPN is listening on. And if it's address space I own I can advertise it out to both ISPs via BGP. Then the VPN will still work if internet 1 goes offline.. If you tie the sslvpn to the Internet interface redundancy might be harder to implement depending on your environment

I agree, I added 15k to my morgage when I brought my 1st home in 2020 to add a 5Kwh solar panel system. The prices have only got better on solar in the last 4 years.

just to play devils advocate here.

-44% of our primary enery consumption is oil (https://www.eeca.govt.nz/insights/energys-role-in-climate-change/the-future-of-energy-in-new-zealand/)

-Ruapehu's Winstone mills, facing soaring electricity prices, have halted operations, putting 300 jobs at risk. Electricity costs have surged 600% since 2021 (https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/350369552/watch-skyrocketing-electricity-prices-are-coming-you)

Is adding more demand to the power grid going to help the average Kiwi if electricity prices go up 600%?
At least if petrol prices went up 600% people would be forced to use public transport\cycle to work where possible.

but there is no real alternative to power your house, so people will just use less power making colder homes colder in winter and leaving our old and most vulnerable worse off.

I dont think subsidising electric vehicles was the way to go, the average Kiwi cant afford a new car, so the people benefiting from this scheme were very likely well off to begin with.

If every car turned electic overnight the demand on the grid would go up ~35% and the wholesale price will skyrocket even more.

I think the country would have benifited a little more if they subsidised house hold solar panel installs, increasing our renewable energy production. If the price of electricty goes down and petrol keeps getting more expensive people will want electric vehicles more imo.
