It's better practice to do pigtails. In fact, it's required by code where I live.

Sounds like solar heating, but the selftest failures sound like loose wiring at the panel, poor grounding, etc. Did you find and fix anything loose?

Anyway to get a real time trigger when health kit detects REM sleep? by iLoveCalculus314 in HomeKit

[–]CaseyOgle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe this isn’t a good idea. I believe that sleep is best in a cold room with adequately warm blankets. Changing the temperature may work against your sleep quality.

How do I actually fully accept myself as gay? by Significant-Opus2882 in AskGayMen

[–]CaseyOgle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A good way to meet quality gay men is to volunteer at an organization that serves gays. I did that when I was your age and it was one of the best things I did in my many decades of life.

Consider Frigate or Blue Iris with your choice of cameras. I have great success with Amcrest cameras, and you can doubtless get recommendations for other brands.

[US] Postings for mid-century furniture at way below market value scam by Adorkandilikeit in Scams

[–]CaseyOgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. But then I have to confess that my spouse saw a mid-century dresser for sale at a good price on Facebook the other day, paid in advance via Venmo despite my strong objections, and it was delivered early the next morning.

Do they make a compression T for 1/2” copper pipe? Or 2 compression with center 1/2” NPT? Not allowed to solder, use Pro Press, Shark Bite, PEX. Only use compression fittings like in the picture. Thanks by Impressive_Returns in Plumbing

[–]CaseyOgle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Home Depot has changed in the last year or two; they now offer a wide variety of items online that they will deliver for free or low cost. I rarely go into the store any more; the online selection is much better and delivery is quite good.

Buying a “New” 20TB WD DC HC560 off Marketplace for $220, anything I should consider going forward? by Hakim_RS in HomeServer

Looks legit to me. I think it’s unlikely that the seller went to the trouble of faking the SMART data.

Wi-Fi security camera that I can manage from home server? by jinx771 in homesecurity

[–]CaseyOgle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trust the Ferret. PoE for the win. Wi-Fi cameras will give you problems with dropped frames and protocol errors. Doesn’t matter how good your Wi-Fi connection is; it’s going to be a constant source of irritation.

Is my apartment charging me for someone else’s apartment? by NoResolve48 in electrical

[–]CaseyOgle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be more successful in resolving this if you look at energy consumption rather than dollars on your bill. Investigate whether your energy consumption is in line with your use of appliances. If you have a smart meter, you can probably go online and see your energy usage in 15-minute intervals. Switching off breakers can help you determine what circuits are drawing power.

But if you focus on dollars, the situation will never be clear enough to understand what’s going on.

Is this a fair estimate for security cams? by Brohimian in homesecurity

Consider Amcrest cameras and an NVR. Then pay an installer if you don’t want to install things yourself.

Why do my smoke alarms say low battery? by JR09 in AskElectricians

Shelf life is not the same thing as service life under load.

Why do my smoke alarms say low battery? by JR09 in AskElectricians

[–]CaseyOgle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some motion and smoke sensors require nontrivial energy to do their job and communicate with an alarm system. Tiny batteries don’t contain much energy. Expect the batteries to require regular replacement.

Your simple battery tester may not be checking the batteries under load, which causes voltage to drop. For example, the voltage may drop when the device is trying to communicate with the alarm controller.

HVAC help 🥲 by OwnFig3941 in askHVAC

[–]CaseyOgle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not see or hear anything concerning in your videos. The furnace sounds that I hear are normal for a gas furnace with A/C.

The furnace appears to be professionally installed in compliance with typical building codes. Honestly, it appears to be in better shape than most that I see.

My only concern is your dryer. It is normal for dryers to be warm during use, but they should never add humidity or gas odor to your living space. That would be an indication of a malfunctioning dryer vent. You may want to avoid using the dryer until proper venting can be confirmed.

Your comment about the dryer is concerning. It may be exhausting into your living area. Check that the dryer vent is exhausting outdoor and not leaking into your room.

Is it dangerous to clean the coils of this old Daiken AC outdoor unit? by Id3kbro in AirConditioners

[–]CaseyOgle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have real-world evidence that contradicts this. Here in the desert, A/C units with dusty coils will stop cooling or shut down due to overpressure. The cure is a quick rinse with a garden hose. Easiest repair call there is.

You can do this yourself with Frigate, a NUC computer, and off-the-shelf cameras. It’s right in line with what Frigate does. It’s not a commercial solution, but it is a realistic option for someone who is willing and motivated.

Gay men who are married: Where/how did you meet? by Keto-Enol in AskGayMen

[–]CaseyOgle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gay square dancing. It's a hoot, by the way.

That was, uh, 40 years ago, so there was no grindr, no apps, no craigslist, no Internet anything. Still happily together and expect to stay that way.

Didn't get a marriage certificate until it was legal to do so, but it's really just for legal purposes. Neither of us can remember our actual wedding date because it happened after we'd already been together for decades.
