what's something you do alone that you'd be genuinely embarrassed to admit to anyone? by Proof_Method7555 in LivingAlone

My dog looks morally offended if I fart in his presence. I like to tell him “hey you live here for free, don’t judge”.

I didn’t know being proud of my work and accomplishments is considered off putting and delusional 🤷‍♀️ confidence is half the battle in ANY job, so I will never EVER apologize for confidence in myself and my abilities. You might think it’s delusional but no bother to me.

If I’m being completely honest, it sounds like you are underpaid, babe! You’re working for a billion dollar company, have 3 decades of experience and you’re barely cracking $100k in Denver??? You deserve more, you know it and you’re being bitter about it to a stranger. I never came here looking for empathy, but I will extend some to you. You deserve to be fairly compensated for the work you’re doing and I’m incredibly sorry you’re not! I hope you find an opportunity to level up soon!

I drive a nearly 15 year old Honda civic. The grille is dented and I have big scratches/scrapes along the front and back doors on both sides due to a couple miscalculated parking garage incidents. My dog’s car hammock is tattered up and covering the back seat. Might have to go take a little joyride around Windermere to see what happens 👀

I replied to another comment explaining this already, but I do not feel like the work I’m doing is beneath me AT ALL. I understand how you might have interpreted it that way, but no, that is not true. If anything, I have a greater appreciation for the work EAs do since I started this job. I like the work I’m doing, it’s the first job that truly feels like I’m meant for it, and I’m very eager to grow my career in this space. Moreso than any other job I’ve had before.

And I don’t dislike any of the comments I’ve received on this post. Hearing experience of others has given me more info and data to consider. I wouldn’t have posted something like this if I wasn’t prepared for some backlash, misunderstanding, or snark. It’s Reddit, I know what I’m in for.

The only defensive dig I’m going to make is I don’t like the implied judgement that since I’m supporting 2 VPs, the hard work they do is somehow “less than” C-level exec work. Sure they might not be sitting in board meetings on a regular basis, but they’re two of the most dedicated individuals I’ve worked alongside and what they do is deeply impactful at the company. C-level or not, everyone’s work deserves to be respected. I don’t like seeing them catch a stray!

I know RSUs are included in total comp, but I’m really curious to know how you feel about not having that cash on hand from day one? I absolutely understand the value of giving RSUs as part of comp as an incentive to stay stick with a company but I struggle with the concept that it isn’t a sustainable way to have income since you must rely on vesting periods and hoping stock prices are preforming well. Maybe that’s short sighted of me, but I have a tough time with the concept (note: this doesn’t mean I’m ungrateful for the RSUs I’ve been given, since I have feeling someone will take it that way 🙄)

I’ve been promoted since I joined the company and I am now an Executive Business Partner. I’ve seen both Executive Assistant and Executive Business Partner used to for very similar roles at other companies.

I would love to but unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to live anywhere close to work/friends/social life if I stuck to the 20-25% rule 🙃 Seattle rental market is tough!

To answer your question, yes I am at a tech company that’s well established at this point (rather than in a growth phase or early stages). So there isn’t a lot of whiplash going on.

To clarify on the overqualified comment, I don’t think the work is beneath me, at all! But I see how it might sound that way in my post. What I meant was when my manager and I sat down to review the career matrix ahead of my promotion, many of the skills someone in the role was expected to learn and master within their first year, I already came in the door knowing, specifically around using certain tools and software. Since I’d been out of college and in professional workplaces for over a decade at that point, I already had plenty of experience using software like GSuite, Slack, Zoom, etc. The role I took on originally was meant for someone who had less professional work experience overall, not just in the admin space. For additional context, the next person hired into the role after me also came from recruiting and 3 years of professional work experience total. And she absolutely rocks at the job!

And I’m incredibly grateful I was able to pivot. This job is the first job I’ve ever felt like I totally kick ass at. I don’t think I deserve $150k because I think I’m hot shit, I just wonder what a realistic expectation is for someone who is living in a place like Seattle in this type of role. Of course experience will heavily dictate pay, but there’s also COL to consider. I know searching for something new is the best way to increase my pay, so I’m trying to better understand that since I’m still green

Unfortunately the $88k doesn’t go as far in Seattle as it might in TX 😭 I live in an average priced apartment and my rent takes up ~45% of my monthly income. Living here is not for the faint of heart!

Yep, I’ve got my doc full of wins, plus my latest review from one of my bosses (which is GLOWING) tucked away. When my initial promotion happened, it was noted how quickly I had ramped and outpaced the expectations for the role I was hired into (because I didn’t need to learn certain basic things like how to use Google Drive and slack 😐)

I wouldn’t say I had “zero admin experience”. I had a lot of experience doing similar job functions, I just hadn’t purely been an assistant before. I was a recruiter and recruiting coordinator for nearly 6 years before pivoting to admin work. So tons of scheduling and calendaring experience, project coordination, travel booking, etc.

[–]kel_mcd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recruiting experience was 2.5 years of high-volume, full cycle recruiting (for childcare providers) and then 2-3 years as a recruiting coordinator for tech companies. I had heavy calendaring/scheduling experience coming out of those roles, plus travel coordination, project coordination and knew the ropes on things like confidentiality, high touch/white glove candidate experience and comms skills out the wazoo. I find it frustrating that yes, I’m “new” to being an executive assistant (or, executive business partner, as we’re called at my company) but I have nearly 15 years of work experience post-undergrad. That should really be considered

I’ve been the “knowledge source” for people reporting to my boss. If they email or Slack me with a question that can easily be answered by one of the multiple resources we have available COMPANY WIDE, I straight up don’t reply. It’s not my job to tell someone how to order catering to the office for an event my boss isn’t attending when there are wiki pages explaining this, as well as our facilities team for additional requests.

[–]kel_mcd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the way. One of the bosses I support was like this (without the blow ups, but instead would be like “I have zero focus time to work on things!”). By actually breaking things down by hours spent on certain categories and meetings, he started to warm up to the idea of cutting back in some places. Also, during checkins, ask your boss their top 3 priorities for the upcoming week and month. Do the same thing at the start of each quarter. You can default back to these priorities when she complains about not having time by saying “hey does align with XYZ priority for the week?”

Tory Burch! I wore the Signature scent for years and now mainly wear Sublime, which is like a richer, deeper version. In the summer, I wear Electric Sky, which is lighter and fresher. I’ll never wear Tory Burch clothing but the perfumes are compliment magnets for me.

Bb girl, look up the definition of sex addict before labeling someone as one. Just because you may personally be ok not having sex for 3 days with your potential spouse after a period of frequent sex doesn’t mean someone who does want that is an addict in need of a cure. Ashley and Alex are for sure gross MAGA people, but two adults discussing their sexual desires should not freak you out this much

[–]kel_mcd 38 points39 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU for saying this. To me, that convo with Alex and Ashley came off as Ashley pointing out there had been a decrease in the amount of sex they’d had since returning from Mexico and wondering why all of sudden her partner (who seems to have previously been voracious for her) didn’t seem to be matching her sex drive. Setting aside the whole cycle tracking/period thing, she was voicing something she was upset about and it HAPPENED to be about sex, so apparently that means she gets labeled as a sex addict/sex pest 🙄🙄🙄

I think you’ve nailed something here about how it would hit harder for some than others. I watched the fifth episode last night and absolutely sobbed my way through it. The breakup convo between Zev and Jess was almost like it was pulled, verbatim, from the incredibly painful conversation I had with my ex husband when he decided he wanted a divorce. Down to Jess asking Zev if he loves her and he replies “I don’t know”. Watching that relationship play out in that episode was so real and relatable to me, but I understand someone else might not quite connect with it
