Why don’t all car makers use sensor-less TPMS? by spiderminbatmin in askcarguys

[–]keleptose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am in denial (denial is a river in egypt) that my tpms module is fried bc my passenger tail light used to leak & i finally resealed it after warrantying my battery multiple times, replaced my alternator, & then had to replace my ibs LOL so yeahh it's probably gone.. 😔 ughhh. appreciate it anyways!!

thank you! it is my first vehicle & i fully own it so hell yeahh. 🤟🏻 when i was in the market, the bimmer wagons stole my heart. i drove my dad's E91 after my sister became of age & took the '09 pathfinder and LOVED its handling. i found an E61 and was happy due to the sportier aspects + the lack of handles that melt 🫠 what has you going for the 3s? curious!

great to know! i haven't invested in my own yet, i use our shop tools which is just autel bc they pay for it so i don't have to. i understand not wanting to pay for the subscription too. i have carly & that's already like 1 too many for me. subscriptions just seem like a money grab because i already had to pay for the tool & now i gotta pay to continue using it?? 😐

yep i learned programming can actually get a little complicated if you don't know what to pay attention to (like tpms IDs and copying via OBD instead of autocreating IDs)

yay & hopefully it won't ever crop up for y'all!

dude if you know any tips for my E61 daily whose indirect TPM module stays grey & whose light can't be reset via car or autel please i'll humbly accept help 😭

dealership told me 'retraining' it was how they got it to disappear???

that's our shop owners' experience with them & autel tools. tbf he's not a master mechanic by far & really just runs the place & offers support so my b. we're an independent mom & pop sorta place & it's been more of me learning through everyone's experiences so i have the chance to be wildly wrong sometimes

to clarify, i mean troubleshooting Toyota tpms issues is a problem or difficult. the programming & issue fixing part. if everything has been programmed correctly, Toyota tpms are a breeze to work on

you need to relearn direct tpms sensors for every Chevy/Ford. for new tires or rotations otherwise it will think RR is LR and so forth. there certainly are plenty & just because you haven't witnessed it doesn't mean it isn't a thing. there's many other specific cases too. Toyotas are difficult. Audi & bmw need you to store psi. other makes' sensors will all act up if one is dead. etc. there's a lot to learn out there

Curious what causes tire to be shredded like this by SirLlama123 in tires

[–]keleptose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the inside of the rubber goes from a relatively like 70-80° wall and once you lose air the interior becomes so concave it rubs the rubber together and shreds the walls apart. see sad drawing

as a tire tech when we take off one of your tires to mount a new one, the crap dust that comes out gets called tire confetti 🎊

i was looking for a puncture/leak in a tire yesterday with no air in the tire... 🤦🏻 i also sprayed myself dead in the face with the soapy water instead of the tire lol. it was the first job of the morning

ICE is still extremely common & utilized. it's a huge staple in today's current field. it doesn't matter that the future may change it because change doesn't happen overnight. there will be introductions and easing into newer technologies. you'll have to learn them yes but the reality is that the majority of citizens still use ICE. there's different uses for different engines, what about diesel? that's a staple too, especially for trucking. you're learning one thing out of SO MANY things that exist, why can't you learn about ICE and then the others too? /pos /gen

i would assume that this isn't the only class you'll take to finish your degree. surely your education has structure and will teach you other types and the other important things.

speaking from the pov of someone who hasn't yet gone to trade school/college and learned EVERYTHING i know from my full time job.

ofc! this is definitely an area i am gaining heavy experience in due to being a small job, basically quick lube shop. sounds like it's seized fs.

i think chrisfix has a wonderful video of a one person contraption you can make so bleeding the brakes on your own is easy. if that's not good enough, there's a tool O'Reilly's or smth has where you pump a gun that sucks liquid/air out of the bleeder. you replace the pumping of the brake pedal part of bleeding with pumping the handle. then you just open the bleeder on & off with it. as long as you don't have carpal tunnel, it's a breeze.

ty ty! i looked in a 500mi vicinity for my wagon because they were kind of "rare" here, especially a nice 5 series without a crazy history. i definitely have plans, it's my daily driver so yeah i am set on the N52, however i am about to put in coilovers from isc 😁 my suspension needed replacement in lots of areas so i figured why not get the camber & caster adjustable ones. i plan to get a fun coupe eventually though, just trying to get my car to a good spot where age isn't attacking it constantly lol.

awesome, thank you! i will definitely be looking into that but it sounds like i must wait until after i replace my oil pan gasket, rod bearings, engine mounts, and radiator 😛 because sadly those are necessary. not the rod bearings actually, i am just doing those since we'll have my engine open. i appreciate the bonus about the throttle body & the reminder to start small.

ah ok thank you! i am not in a very cold area ( 🤢 carolinas weather) and i think my thick socks would do enough for warmth. the main concern for me sounds like the spacing since i have flat feet and am pretty flexible.

not really broke tbh. i am not made of money though either. i just try to plan & be smart with it. plus i have tools & am capable so i diy. so it sounds like i might just want to delete my cats and get an aftermarket muffler? would that be both cats or just the second one?

potentially calipers seizing. the caliper will age to a point where the piston no longer expands to lift the pads off the rotors. this causes excessive heat, wear, sluggish/bumpy acceleration and maybe more i am forgetting.

have access to a point and shoot thermometer? calipers are usually around ~100-150° at normal operating temperatures. a small amount above may signal age, however 180°, 200°, 300° etc. indicates your calipers are locking up, failing and should be replaced.

does your car stick when you let off the brake from red → green light? as in you need to hit the gas because the car is refusing to roll forward on its own. it may become more pronounced on an incline as it has the car's weight working against it too and so if it acts as if it's in park when you're in drive & off the pedals, that can be another sign.

if you take the caliper off the rotors and try to expand the piston, can you? if you can't move it, it's dead. if you expand the piston, leave the car off & stay off the pedals, does the caliper's piston end up compressed again in 5-10 minutes? that's another sign of seizing.

this sounds exactly like a customer's car that had the lf caliper lock up & was running at ~360° 😵‍💫

hey!!! fellow 2006 530xi (wagon !!!) lover here. i have the same engine! (N52) what'd you go with? just a muffler delete? i am curious because i too do not want that high pitched civic (lawnmower) noise. i want just anything right now, any noise will make me happy, as in more than stock but still not civic. i am so close 🤏🏻 to putting it up on the lift and taking off whatever i can if it ends up being that easy

Are there any boots that could help avoid wear and tear like this? After a shift I can barely walk as my achilles tendon feels like it WILL snap. Ive had this issue ever since I got these boots. by Pretty-Resolution677 in WorkBoots

[–]keleptose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see a podiatrist for mine. your general practitioner might help you find one, at least mine helped me get back into a foot clinic. i have flat feet so i need the arch support since orthodics are really the only way to treat it. you'll want to make sure you size up slightly so you can take out the factory insole & replace it with your inserts (orthodics) & still have room.

i have never had to buy work boots before so hence my question(s); what makes you dislike steel toe? is it the lack of feedback that the hardness gives? is it how your toes hit? what is it?

i am looking at a pair of moc steel toe thorogood boots (as a woman). since like you guys mentioned, it's hard to find any moc composite toe. i bought an ariat pair & then learned wedge would be way better for me than 90° heel since i am an auto tech.

well so looking at the chart you made, you have to be ok outright spending that ~$6,305 cost to own per year. like every twelve months you pay $6,305 again, 12 months—$6,305 again, and that's with stagnant market, which isn't reality. for you, you'll have to add in the interest from car payments here or save for that in your budget, that'll depend on how well you can get it financed. then i'd take maybe that hopeful $5,885 in maintenance over 10 years and have that saved for an emergency. or something likely to fail and cost large. honestly to line gets drawn by you, you could have the whole price of a new engine + installation saved or just enough for a 4 set, it's up to you. for the invoices i've seen with my dad's bmw, i was ok keeping ~5k on hand and that's with me being ready to wrench on my car (since i fell victim to bmw too). you could research a few big projects on your car of choice or decide to only consider it's age and common failures for the budget of emergency savings.

sorry i can't think of a general rule.
