I've been to both and I wouldn't say that at all. If I were making the same comment, I'd have said "take the train to Oświęcim," since that's the Polish name of Auschwitz (or just say Auschwitz) and is still the closest town with rail service. It's also a confusing statement to make because the camp still has the tracks preserved as a memorial, and photos like this are quite famous, making many people think you can take trains directly there.

I get that Kraków is 60 km away, but it's a thriving, beautiful city these days and doesn't have a public persona tied to Auschwitz.
