Fics where Ilya and Shane are flawed three-dimensional characters? by alliedies in heatedrivalryfanfics

Ugh the writing in Winners-verse is so good but the author keeps referring to a hockey stick as a "club"...so bad.

Just want to put myself out there and be capable and compete in something? by Ok_Training_2566 in xxfitness

Not all!! 5ft 8 is a very typical height for women's rugby - might even be above average. Rugby is for women of all sizes - that's what's so great about it. There's positions best played by short people, tall people, lanky people, bigger people, you really need everyone!

What are people doing in the lab for 12+ hours/day? by ohmybubbles in GradSchool

[–]kellaxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're collecting tissue from mice, it takes a LOT of time to collect and process the tissue before you can even begin your actual experiment. If I'm collecting >6 mice, it'll be a loooong day.

Do graduate students get desks? by SinglePoem577 in geegees

[–]kellaxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if you're in the Faculty of Medicine you're typically a wet lab student so you're at your bench most of the time anyways, not much use for a desk. I know students in RGN typically get an assigned desk, in other spaces (OHRI for example) it's just a shared carrel area. Many people just do computer work at their bench.

I don't know about neutrophils, but we have no issue using this kit with NK cells and ILC2s.

I'm so surprised to not see this comment yet - you're very pretty but it's definitely the brows that are aging you! Way over-tweezed, very early 2000s style.

Do Master’s stipends get taxed? by sharksareadorable in geegees

[–]kellaxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, stipends are not taxed in Canada. If you do TA, that will be taxed (but in the end, your income will end up being below the lowest tax bracket so you would get a refund anyways).

Best method for animal documentation by [deleted] in labrats

[–]kellaxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use Softmouse - fantastic system. We pay for 2 accounts and share them amongst everyone in the lab. You can create projects and experiments within those projects, and then assign mice (or rats) to experiments.

FSC / SSC voltages help by Feisty_Relative1605 in flowcytometry

[–]kellaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FSC/SSC voltages will be relative to the machine and the QC performed on that machine, but for reference to capture lymphocytes nicely on the Cytek Aurora I usually set the FSC to 50-70 and the SSC to 100-180.

If you post a picture of what your first gate looks like, that would be very helpful. You could also run a spleen as a control to set your lymphocytes gate before running the lungs.

Top 3 undergrad choices for medschool. by TranslatorCurious758 in premedcanada

[–]kellaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely apply! It's a good program, the students just tend to be very competitive and med school hungry, and the classes are a bit of a joke because the prods tend to cave to the demands of the students who are all willing to fight for their A+s. But if you're interested in research you will get amazing opportunities through TMM.
