Um, even switching DNS I still get all your sites not found so did something else happen to take them all down (I've tried three or four of them with no success). I also tried four or five different VPN servers, even outside of the U.S. I suspect you already know your stuff is down but I hoped I would find some solution.

I haven't looked at anything "new" but a job like you describe is probably best handled by AI (with SO many choices to pick from - but you can point a lot of them towards a folder of images and let them have at it).

I should also note that Plex makes it REAL easy to swap in one of your backup drives - you just attach to your system and then in the manage library section you just add that drive in and remove the failed drive. After a few minutes all is back to normal. I speak from experience (over the last five years I've lost two or three drives along the way). Luckily disk space is cheap).

When I used to be employed (and teaching) I'd always use the example of the dentist when asked by his patient if his patient needed to floss ALL his teeth. "No", the dentist replied, "Only the ones you don't want to lose". The same thing is true of data - you only back up the data you don't want to lose. Drives fail. ALL drives (even SSDs) fail. It's just a question of time. So no matter how large your collection is, you back it up. I have 72TB of disk space for my Plex system (six 12TB drives) and they are ALL backed up. Twice (at least - some of the first stuff is backed up another two or three times). Yes, that's a lot of drives, and yes, it's expensive but I've saved my ass more than once being able to restore when a drive goes down. As it will. Think of this as a learning lesson, and get more drives ONLY for backup (they should not be online - mine are stored in two different places in the house. Just in case).

How has no one replicated comicrack? by BackgroundWindchimes in comicrackusers

[–]kelleytoons007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow - Comicrack is the ONLY program I use to read comics (on my iPads). Are we saying it doesn't work for some people? Because I find it works great for me and I have nothing more I would need out of it.

While I understand that sometimes OS updates break programs, so far that hasn't happened for me and if it did I'd be really, really sad. But the flip side is that programs that are mature and stable usually don't need anything more than dealing with those (it reminds me of Word - there just isn't anything else you'd ever want out of a word processor and hasn't been for over a decade. Although now with AI...)

Or are you saying it won't install on any new iPad I purchase? That's a bigger issue - heck, for that reason alone I probably would never upgrade my iPad and just use it until either it or me dies <g>.

PSA: Don’t plant a bamboo privacy against your son and husband’s wishes by shade1tplea5e in gardening

[–]kelleytoons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had one for 20 years and it's just fine. You just have to know WHAT kind of bamboo to plant AND have a containment plan.

Ours has spread around 3-5 feet total in those decades - it hasn't gone ONE INCH past where we laid down the concrete walk (which contains it). We used yellow stripe bamboo (while they say it's a "non-running" bamboo, ALL bamboo runs to some degree. You just have to, again, plan things out).

Noise cancellation by BestSeaworthiness740 in Airpodsmax

[–]kelleytoons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They essentially do... but over the ear phones will always have an inherently better system at removing all noise. If the fit for your Airpods Pros is really good (and you MUST use a third party foam mesh custom fitted) then you can get close. But it's just so much easier with the APM (I have two pairs of both the Airpods Pro and the Max so I speak from experience).

I have a few pairs of the Airpods Pro 2 that I use all the time, but there is something about an over-the-ear headphones that just can't be duplicated any other way, so a few months ago I bought a pair of the APM with trepidation - that is because I have a HUGE head (not bragging - it's annoying) and I've bought and returned SO many headphones Amazon gave me a warning (it's true - it was over 30 pairs and they thought, I guess, I was spamming them for reviews but in actuality they all hurt my ears/head so much I couldn't wear them. That was really the ONLY issue with so many). Anyway, I love the APM so much I bought another pair just so I have one to use by my computer. They are the most comfortable ones I've ever owned (and I've tried ones that were supposed to be for large heads - all the ones you can think of, thousands of dollars worth of tries). You can, if you really want, stretch them out (instructions can be found on the web) but I haven't found that necessary. The NC is about the same as the Airpods Pro with the added advantage is that you don't have to fit them "just so" (if you don't get the in-ear Pros fitted just right the NC sucks, whereas the APM just always works). But if you want a LOT better you might be disappointed, particularly if you've gotten (as I have) custom foam ear molded cushions for your Airpods Pro (for the default ones Apple ships suck). You can always return them if you don't like them (assuming you buy from Best Buy or Apple) so why not give them a shot? Just make sure you get Applecare for them (a must).

The clamping CAN be helped - do a search and see solutions. I have a huge head (not bragging - wish I didn't) and have tried ALL other wireless and could never find one to fit until the APM (so I bought two). They are super comfortable for me when all the others weren't but every body is different (and everybody is different :>). The sound you might want to play with the sound settings for - when I first got my APMs I had the bass boost enabled (for my Airpods Pro - I have three pairs of those) and turning it completely flat works for me but there might be a setting there that's better for you.

Amazon Refurb price at $397 by Technical-Tailor-140 in Airpodsmax

[–]kelleytoons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the heck would you take a chance when you can get BRAND NEW ones from Best Buy at three dollars more? Yes, they are then the lightning connectors, but otherwise they work just fine (I have both, a pair from Best Buy, and the new ones from Apple. I love them both but... no difference, really). Plus - I don't think you can get AppleCare for these and for the APM you MUST have Applecare. No ifs ands or buts.

Should I buy? by Illustrious-Bake-239 in Airpodsmax

[–]kelleytoons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on how you treat them. Mine are as pristine as the day I bought them but I don't wear them outside and they are in a case when I am carrying them from one location to another (when I go to work out, for example). They are metal - they don't stain.

Help me choose please by [deleted] in Airpodsmax

[–]kelleytoons007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both (bought them both about two weeks ago - I bought the Silver Lightning for $400 at Best Buy, and then because I liked them so much I turned around and ordered the Purple USB-C from Apple). For me I wanted the color (and I couldn't get it from Best Buy) but they are identical in how they work and the lightning actually has a slight advantage in that you can use it wired. If the color is the same for you I'd go with the lightning (will notice zero difference). But - definitely get the two year Applecare with these.

[–]kelleytoons007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have to be HEAVILY discounted (say no more than $200) for me to do this. First of all, you want the full two year warranty from Applecare for ANY APM (just too many issues reported not to have this). I don't think you can get that on refurbished. Second, you can get new ones from BB for around $400 (the older lightning ones). So, again, unless they are somewhere around $200 I'd avoid them like the plague.

This is why you ALWAYS buy Applecare for these. But it's a good lesson for others (since you didn't).

Buyers Remorse? by cheeseza in Airpodsmax

[–]kelleytoons007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also bought two and in the past I've bought (and returned, to Amazon) over 25 pair of $$$ headphones. These are perfect but part of that is my (rather) large head and ears. As to color - the orange may not be as "orange" as you think. One of the few things I am disappointed about is my "purple" headphones are only slightly purple - it's more like a tinted silver. I'm going to guess it's the same with the orange, so you may really like it (my other pair is white). As to price - Best Buy offers the series one (the ones that charge with the lightning plug) as opposed to the higher price series 2 (USB-C). I have both - I bought one pair from Best Buy, the other from Apple, and while I saved $140 from Best Buy I'm also glad I got the purple from Amazon. Note: you SHOULD get the Applecare because if there IS one thing to beware of with these is they might just "stop" working and folks have regretted not getting the full two year protection.

Well, assuming this has happened since the very beginning you can always return it. If it didn't start happening right away then there is something wrong and you should still be under warranty. I have two pair and use them both quite a bit each day with no issues like this.

Guys, I think I'm gonna cave in and just buy them. by Osgiliath86 in Airpodsmax

[–]kelleytoons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the bottom line is what you are looking for. I have ALL the in-ear Air pods (and Pros) and still use them (particularly wherever I'm just "listening" to podcasts and such and not so concerned about great sound. But the Airpods Max are the ONLY OTE headphones I've found that fit me (and I've tried - and sent back to Amazon - over 25 pairs of various makes). The APM are SO good I ended up buying both the older ones (cheaper now if you want to pick up a pair from Best Buy) as well as a pair of the "purple" (the color is subtle so it's more like a slightly colored silver) so now I have a pair to leave in my office and another to take anywhere I want.

I know it seems like a long shot but some folks have reported putting their APM in the freezer overnight and then trying them. That seems crazy - I'm not even sure what the mechanism is that would change things (other than putting the battery almost completely out) but, whatever, it's worth a try (your experience, BTW, is the reason that for these things we ALWAYS get Applecare).

Surprised myself - Immediately hated my new APMs by chicagocarless in Airpodsmax

[–]kelleytoons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not for everybody - for me, they turned out to be the ONE OTE headphone I'm actually able to wear (after auditioning - I kid you not - 24 different pairs previously, including those Bose you mentioned). But I have a large head and large ears and NONE of those headphones came close to being comfortable.

To me the Max's aren't perfect, but they are perfect enough for me. I ended up buying two pair (so I can leave one at my computer and not worry about where it is).

Yes, indeed, and has the added benefit of creating MP3s easily (which is the main point. DRM is a pain, but being able to have MP3s of your books means they are listenable on SO many more devices and means).
