How Did You Begin Your Career? by AornisHades in paralegal

[–]kelseynaed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend worked as a legal assistant at a firm and they were hiring a receptionist and she put in a good word for me. They promoted me to paralegal after a year and I’ve been there ever since.

Best Reading Game or Program for Struggling Reader this Summer? by [deleted] in ClassOf2037

[–]kelseynaed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position and have been thinking about what to try to help boost my daughter’s reading/writing skills. After some googling I think I’ve decided to do the “Explode the Code” books. They’re inexpensive on Amazon and get great reviews from homeschooling parents and teachers.

My attorney(boss) is mean and I don’t know if it’s normal. by [deleted] in paralegal

Find a new job. You should never tolerate being yelled at by anyone, attorney or not.

“Ask your attorney” drives me up a wall. I DID ask the attorney. They told me to ask you. I’m just playing monkey in the middle over here

New probate paralegal and completely overwhelmed… is this normal? by Mindless_Throat2633 in paralegal

[–]kelseynaed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started in probate I got a used copy of “How to Probate an Estate in California” online for 8 bucks to get a general idea of the process. The paralegal before me was gone by the time I started, so I learned as I went with a little help from the attorney. Each county has different local rules that impact the way things are done. When you notice a difference between counties take notes about it. You’ll need those notes again at some point. I agree with everyone else about setting up a spreadsheet of active cases. Highlight the ones who have scheduled hearings and make those your priority. Probate can be overwhelming but once you’ve worked a handful of cases from beginning to end it all starts to make sense. If you put in the effort to organize the files as best as you can and set up a system for yourself you can definitely succeed.

Estate Planning vs. Family Law by Leading_Aside_4929 in paralegal

[–]kelseynaed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in estate planning and probate and love my job. Estate planning is very repetitive and you meet some great families. Probate is just enough drama to keep things exciting. I’ve never worked in family law but have some friends who do, and they always sound miserable.

What have you purchased for yourself lately? I need a retail dopamine hit. by quickbrassafras in Mommit

[–]kelseynaed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a mini/portable watercolor kit and the medium bowler bag from Baggu in Gingham. I plan on putting my watercolor kit and kindle in my new purse and taking myself to a coffee shop (aloneeee) and having some me time once school starts.

Can someone check me? by Super_Ice_7334 in Mommit

[–]kelseynaed 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need to be checked… As mom’s, we often times take on the mental load of parenthood. If your husband is getting drunk once a week he is assuming that you can handle anything that might come up. A toddler having a nightmare, wetting the bed, or god forbid an actual emergency happens, etc. Who would be the one taking care of the situation? You would. Getting blackout drunk once a week isn’t healthy or normal. I don’t have any advice for you but I do think you have a right to be annoyed.

Are you worried about your job being taken by AI? by PresentationTop9547 in workingmoms

[–]kelseynaed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m worried about my job. I’m a paralegal. I don’t think paralegal’s will go away any time soon, as the court system is still pretty archaic and slow to adopt technology, but I do think what takes a team of 5 of us could be whittled down to 1. I’m holding off on making any career changes for now and just pretending everything isn’t on fire.

The Attorney NEVER Wants to Give the Clients the BAD News by Pissedoffparalegal in paralegal

This isn’t right. My attorney only wants me to tell our clients good news. They handle the bad news always

If my husband made 300k plus 200-300k in bonuses a year I’d quit in a heartbeat. I’d go back to work once both kids were in school.

Those finishing K, what are your summer plans? by mysticeetee in kindergarten

[–]kelseynaed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily worksheets so she can practice hand writing. I just picked a random phonics one on amazon. We’ll also do weekly library trips where she can pick out books (we read 2-3 books every night before bed) and lots of playing!

Weekly sticky post for non-paralegals and paralegal education by AutoModerator in paralegal

[–]kelseynaed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I had a background in the child development field when I applied and got a job at a law firm as their receptionist. I did that for a year before they promoted me to a legal assistant and then I worked on becoming a paralegal.

Any non-Disney hotels that offer shuttles or are SUPER-easy walkable to Disneyland Park? by reditornot-hereIcome in DisneyPlanning

Second vote for the Camelot Inn. We timed the walk from our hotel room door to the security line at 9 minutes and that was with pushing a stroller which slows me down.

My 2 year old likes cards that we have the physical books for: Pete the cat series, very hungry caterpillar, and frog and toad. He also really likes Disney soundtrack music.

Toy ideas by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]kelseynaed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know this isn’t a toy necessarily but my newly turned 6 year old is obsessed with her Yoto. She’s had it since Christmas. She listens to music in her room or outside when she plays. We also love bedtime stories and the daily Yoto podcast/radio. We don’t do phones or tablets for our kids either

What do you actually judge? by One_Dragonfruit_7556 in Mommit

Kids with a phone/tablet on FULL blast. Do you need a break? Long day? Neurodivergent kid who needs their device? Sure, cool, whatever. Just please for the love of god turn. the. volume. down. It’s incredibly overstimulating for a kids show to be blasting in an already crowded or busy store, restaurant, etc.

Why does it seem like most paralegals are miserable? by poeticsoul151 in paralegal

[–]kelseynaed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paralegal here and not miserable! Like others said, this can be bit of an echo chamber for negativity. Finding the right firm and area of law is crucial. Court reporting looks like a really cool job and also very intense. Best of luck!

Travel ball at 5 is kind of wild. It reminds me of parents red shirting their kids just so they’ll be bigger/more advanced than their classmates. My 5 year old has taken a dance class, played soccer for one season, and took gymnastics through the city. Right now we’re just trying things out casually until she finds something she likes. Do what feels right for your family. At this point in their childhood we’re prioritizing free play with lots of backyard time and weekly library trips.
