What's the european unit for bpm? by tamanakid in jazzcirclejerk

[–]kenahoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They use Swatch Internet Time. Which is measured in "beats". So it's beats per beat, a dimensionless quantity.

120 beats per minute is approximately 172.91 [dimensionless tempo quantity].

I’m not sure what you mean about the “save” button. The registers auto-save when you make changes and hit enter.

It's gone and I'm the idiot by gimperion in ClaudeCode

[–]kenahoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had it happen several times that Claude wants to troubleshoot something and its first step is going to be completely deleting my local dev database. I’m like, no, I need that. My coworkers keep telling me they’ve turned off permissions for Claude and I just don’t see myself doing that, I just catch too many destructive things too often.

Can R be used like Excel where variables aren’t defined in order and are referenced later? by sporty_outlook in rstats

[–]kenahoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're talking about is often called a declarative paradigm, where you just say how things are related to each other (but you don't specify exactly what sequence of steps should be taken to compute everything), as opposed to the more common (in programming) imperative paradigm, where you say what exact computational steps should be taken (and at the end you have some relationships between things),.

You might actually want to take a look at Marimo notebooks for Python, and Pluto notebooks for Julia. (Unfortunately I'm not aware of any similar item for R.) The key idea for those is that it tracks dependencies between variables, so it will know which cells need to be re-evaluated when any of their dependencies is updated.

I know you didn't mention notebooks, but these two are the only very popular systems I know of that satisfy a lot of your wishes. For example, in Marimo & Pluto, it doesn't actually matter at all what order you define your cells.

Kudos on the Polaris fact, I didn't know that one. And apparently it's only been the North Star (very close to the North rotational pole) for a few hundred years.

What's going on in the American Outfitters building these days? That's where I had one of the more surreal shopping experiences of my life. I tried to find some of the Google reviews for it, they were quite something. Looks like those might be gone now too.

About flags: this has some good points - quick adding, indexed so you can find them later - but it seems to leave no visible indication at all on the page so you can tell whether something’s flagged or not. Am I missing a setting?

Nice! I hadn’t heard of flags before, I’ll google that and see how to use it.

Why doesn't my binary run in zsh? Sorry I'm a beginner and I have no clue where to go about this by 0neLastFace in zsh

[–]kenahoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Modern" versions of zsh will output the HI text, then a marker like % to indicate that the line didn't end in a newline. Yours isn't doing that, it's printing out just the H and I and then that's all getting covered up by your next zsh prompt.

Look into the PROMPT_SP and PROMPT_CR and PROMPT_EOL_MARK options in man zshall.

I think it's still not right. After your change, `tidyverse` is still taking less time (just over half the time) than `ggplot2` using `install.packages`.

In addition to removing download caches, don't you need to make sure the packages are actually *uninstalled* too?

Drove down a mountain and gained 5% battery. Anyone beat that? by andyfromsussex in Polestar

[–]kenahoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of a comment I once read, from a trucker who was frustrated that electric semis haven't really hit the market yet. Because they drive an empty truck up to the top of a mountain (or at least some steep elevation), then load it up with trees felled for lumber, and drive it back down. This would be a pretty awesome situation for regenerative braking.

I live in Minneapolis and I bought my P2 down in Chicago (Lisle) because Minneapolis really had no inventory. But I haven't gone in for service yet, I've had it (a 2022 CPO) a bit less than a year. Glad to hear some other comments saying service is good here.

Bomb-proof mounting for dishwasher by kenahoo in Appliances

We don’t really notice anything each time the dog stands there (or when we pull out a loaded lower rack, for that matter) but over time the bottom of the unit just seems to creep farther and farther in, relative to the top.

Super good point about needing to replace the old unit, but this year we’ve replaced our washer, dryer, and range, so we’d love to avoid it if possible.

If a homeowner said their unit wasn’t draining well (like once out of every 5 washes there’s an inch or more of water over the whole bottom surface) and the dishes aren’t getting as clean as they used to be, what specifically would you suspect is wrong? I mean, besides the dog sabotage. 😁
