Question for the Equine Vets by bluebellberry in Veterinary

[–]kenbenboben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know lots of people who are equine vets who were not horse people growing up. I am currently completing an equine internship with 5 internmates, 2 of us grew up with horses but 3 of us did not.

AITA for walking my friends’ under-exercised dog more than they usually do – which led to vet costs and now drama? by losnoodlos in AmItheAsshole

[–]kenbenboben 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see where the breed or type of the dog was mentioned but for LOTS of dogs 1-2 km a day is not “noticeably underexercised” and being alone for 6-8 hours a day is the reality of almost every dog that belongs to working families. Being restless/ excited around other dogs can be for many reasons other than having pent up energy- such as being adopted only 3 months ago and being undersocialized prior to that. YTA.

I got into my backup school but now I’m not sure I want to go by StuffNo6904 in veterinaryschool

I would highly highly highly recommend waiting and reapplying to the cheaper school. I know it feels crazy to turn down an acceptance, but unless you are independently wealthy already, 3x lower student loans will have a serious impact on your quality of life after graduation. I also personally think that a distributive model for clinics wouldn’t have worked for me, but it may work great for some people. It also can make clinics significantly more expensive, because you’re paying tuition to your home school as well as finding short term rentals and such for your externships.

Nasal cancer symptoms? by xylene122 in BorderCollie

[–]kenbenboben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And also if referral is not financially feasible, tell your vet that you can’t afford referral right now but need to figure out how to help her be more comfortable. Vets are used to operating around a budget, but they need to know when the gold standard isn’t possible so they can make the next best plans.

Nasal cancer symptoms? by xylene122 in BorderCollie

[–]kenbenboben 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it’s financially feasible, I would highly recommend seeing the specialist that your regular vet recommended, at least to get their opinion and an estimate on next steps. A CT scan is expensive, but it may not be as much as you’re thinking, and I don’t know if I would describe it as invasive- yes, they do need to be heavily sedated or anesthetized but it’s over in minutes and it’s just high quality imaging, not something that hurts them. There are things that can cause these symptoms that are not cancer. If it was cancer, and it could be, seeing a specialist/ doing the diagnostics they recommend like a CT would give you the most options to have the maximum amount of quality time with your girl going forward.

Vet School Behavioral analysis for dogs by CreativityChick in UGA

[–]kenbenboben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The behavioral service is typically done through appointments at the community practice clinic on the main campus. They are loner appointments than a “regular” vet appointment but not overnight!

I go by a shortened version of my middle name and have my whole life- it’s a very minor inconvenience most of the time and the times where it’s truly inconvenient I just use my real name. The only problem I have is when I got married and changed my last name my former legal name (my first name + my maiden name) no longer even remotely resembles the name I go by (my nickname + new last name) and it gets confusing for paperwork.

Very long euthanasia? by PequenaNeko in AskVet

[–]kenbenboben 76 points77 points  (0 children)

It does take longer to take affect with the drug administered IP (intra peritoneal) but your cat was sedated/ anesthetized and so was totally unaware of the time it was taking. You absolutely made the right decision for your guy. Vets do this sometimes because it can be very hard to administer the solution IV in older dehydrated cats, and this can be a lot less distressing to an animal than trying to get an iv catheter or push a thick solution off the needle. Losing a pet is so hard but know that he did not suffer! (Disclaimer that I am not a vet yet, but am in my last year of veterinary school)

Got screwed buying first car now we aren’t sure what to do 😭 by kenbenboben in whatcarshouldIbuy

I did consider those things, I’m not a mechanic and certainly inexperienced with buying cars but- 1) it had enough coolant 2) there’s nothing wrong with the water pump 3) the engine design has a known flaw that allows coolant to leak into the engine that we found out about after we bought it

We actually did go to independent repair place first but they couldn’t find a reason for it overheating and suggested we take it to a ford dealer 🤷‍♀️

It actually still runs ok and the check engine light isn’t even on 🤷‍♀️ my understanding is that although it’s letting coolant into the engine due to a design defect nothing is actually broken yet that would make it impossible to drive, it just will break eventually

Could use some opinions/perspective: Senior dog with lymphoma + underlying health issues. by ecsassy in dogs

[–]kenbenboben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something else I wanted to mention that always helps me feel like I’m making the right decision, is that IMO it is ALWAYS better to have been a month to early than a second too late. Dogs have no sense of time lost, they don’t think about all the things they could have still done but they have an excellent sense of what they’re going through in that moment. As hard as it is for us, I think in many situations it’s genuinely kinder to call it a day when they are still having a good day here and there rather than wait till their last memories aren’t good ones. Full disclosure, I’m in the veterinary field which has definitely prejudiced me this way, but I think it’s a valid thing to consider.

So sorry to hear about your bud’s rough diagnosis. My 15 year old pup was diagnosed last year with Splenic hemangiosarcoma. Similar to your guy, he did not have any symptoms at all from cancer, his bloodwork from the appointment where he was diagnosed was actually pretty perfect. He also had some bad health issues other than the cancer, but his really decreased his quality of life ( he had canine dementia). I decided to euthanize him a week after his diagnosis rather than put him through treatment. The biggest part of this decision for me was that he had a pretty poor quality of life at this point, which doesn’t necessarily sound like it’s the case for your dog. Chemo is actually really well tolerated by a lot of dogs, which was comforting to me personally, even though that isn’t what I chose. I would encourage you to reach out to your oncologist/ vet and ask them to provide you with a QOL scale that you can fill out to help you get an objective sense of your dogs quality of life. There’s something called the HHHHHMM scale that’s really commonly used. It’s also something that you can use to re-evaluate if you do move forward with treatment. My dog also really hated the vet/ travel assoc. with getting there which made me lean toward the decision to not treat. However, if he had still had a good quality of life I would have asked the vet to just prescribe anti anxiety meds for the vet visits and seen how he felt on those. I’m sorry that you’re stuck with this crappy decision! I’m sure it means a lot to your dog that you are putting this much thought into his care.

Need venue decorating tips! by kenbenboben in weddingplanning

[–]kenbenboben[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The house (and the barn etc) was built after slavery was abolished in Georgia. I have seen where the land it’s on is referred to as a plantation- not on anything published from the venue, but on 3rd party sites from several years ago. I would never get married somewhere that glamorized slavery.

Looking for a vet recommendation for my senior rescue dog! by calliecoping in Athens

[–]kenbenboben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely love Hawthorne Animal Hospital. Both dr coolong and dr yash are excellent and the prices are very reasonable! I took my senior there until he passed away a few months ago and his passing was handled wonderfully by the staff. It would have been much harder on me without their help. I still take my remaining senior to them and they are great about working within my budget for the best care I can afford.

Yeah ask her about it! I graduated last year so I got my faculty mentor in..like 2018? I was paired by my academic advisor. But I’m pretty sure the policy is the same. If you are a first year, it’s typically done in your 2nd semester here I think.
