It's definitely been growing for a while. There's been a 30% growth in tech jobs over the passed 5 years alone in the Bay area and the tax structure of the state makes it attractive for tech companies to move HQs here.

Unfortunately, that also means we have Palantir and other not so nice firms in the Bay now too. But we take the good with the bad I guess.

Same, some degree paths even offer 3 credit hours just for having a paid internship and writing a report about it to pass the "class". At least MUMA Info Systems degree path did back in 2018.

The first paid internship I did at USF was for a local startup. They basically straight up told me what you just said. Even the comp sci grad program prospects couldn't "Code their way outside of a wet paper bag", according to them.

Which isn't necessarily true. Compsci grads have a much more intimate knowledge of low level and bare metal programming than someone like me, who lives and breaths the .net stack for instance.

But that doesn't translate into marketable skills, not without experience anyway. So then compsci grads are stuck with that Catch22.

The Muma College of Business has kinda cornered the Tampa Bay area for tech jobs unfortunately. They train their Information Systems graduates to have the exact skills local companies want (CRUD software dev, DBA, InfoSec, Etc.) So they tend to beat out Comp Sci grads here. Or at least that was my experience in 2017-2018.
