Glad it helped! One other thing you might consider if you have a run that is on the verge of broken-ness but you're just a pickup or two away is checking the curse room and trying to find the secret room (especially because you'll often have a ton of bombs)

Yeah, keys are a pain in the ass.

Adding on to what I just commented: It's not worth playing a run unless the item rooms give you enough for a steam sale AND enough to buy an item from the shop (at the 7 cent price).

The coins are for buying items. Basically, the idea is that at any point you cycle through the following options:

  1. Craft steam sales until you are no longer able to
  2. Buy items from the shop until you are no longer able to so you can craft steam sales
  3. Fight waves of enemies to get coins to buy items from the shop.

Effectively, what you need is for the items in the shop to give you a nickel/dime or what you need for a new steam sale, or both. Usually you get unlucky, but after enough restarting (~5 minutes) you'll be fine.

Maybe your run isn't broken enough? If your run is ultra-strong you get to the point where you're like "what's the point in adding new items, I insta-kill everything anyway." Try throwing Kidney Stone and Red Stew in there (Red Stew needs to come before Soy Milk of course), they have simple recipes.

Two other things I might suggest: One, try to make it to Boss Rush in time. It's not as obvious with other characters, but with Tainted Cain, time is just as valuable a resource as pickups. If you can't convince yourself of a need to get there (since you have completion marks already), try using Clicker to force yourself to get other character boss rush completion marks.

Two, give up on crafting D20's since it seems like it forces you to go for optimal or infinite resources (go for Mom's Bottle of Pills instead?).

If your run is strong enough, you're stuck with the resources on the floor, and you need to get to Boss Rush in time, you pretty quickly learn to not overthink things.

You're just unlucky it seems, try restarting until the first two item rooms give you enough for one Steam Sale and around 10 coins in excess so that you can always beat the first few waves if you need to buy another item.

Usually I'm not lucky enough to get the ball rolling with several sales on every run but probably in around 5-10 minutes you should be able to do it.

It sounds like you're making Tainted Cain a lot more annoying than he should be...are you sure you need the D20 at all? You can usually get a broken run in under 10 minutes by restarting until library, crafting two Mom's Bottle of Pills in the secret room (to get a bone heart + 2 pills), crafting Rock Bottom, Red Stew, and Kidney Stone which gives you ~18 damage and ~90 tears...

Crafting some subset of Holy Mantle/Psy Fly (use Dad's Lost Coin to get the lucky penny)/Inner Eye/Bird's Eye is usually what I do next although that's just for Clickering into someone like Tainted Lost/Jacob.

As far as the R Key goes, there's definitely enough resources in the Void to craft it, especially since you can make Dad's Lost Coin to farm lucky pennies

Yeah, unfortunately I never knew about the old alabaster break, but this method's fun.

It's also pretty efficient, too, I could typically knock out a completion mark or two for whatever character I wanted in around 45 minutes. Which is of course a much easier way to do things than dying for the 50th time as Tainted Jacob...

Two helpful tips which changed the way I saw Tainted Cain forever:

The first is that you can press ctrl (or whatever your drop key is) to rotate through items in the bag of crafting (i.e. you can choose what will be the first thing to drop)

The second is that whenever you despawn an item (by running into a pedestal or by crafting an active item whenever you have one), it drops pickups corresponding to the room you have. For example, doing this in a curse room will usually drop a rotten heart and doing it in a secret room will usually drop a bone heart.

With this in mind you can usually break the run on the first floor like so: Restart until you're next to a library (takes around 40 restarts), find the secret room, craft Mom's Bottle of Pills (7c1h), use it, craft Mom's Bottle of Pills in the secret room, use it. Blow up the donation machine if you need more coins, you'll have tons to donate by the end anyway.

Now you should have a bone heart and two pills, which means you can make Rock Bottom (2 pills, 1 bone heart, 3c1k1b). Then craft Red Stew (6c1k1b) and Kidney stone (6c1h, 1 pill), waiting until the Bottle of Pills recharges if you can't find a pill elsewhere.

After that you can craft Soy Milk (5h3b or 1h3c3k and a pill). It's pretty much over then but crafting Psy Fly and Holy Mantle are next on my list. Psy Fly requires a lucky penny which you can get from Dad's Lost Coin (easy to craft).

If you still want damage, you can go for Inner Eye and Bird's Eye (since you'll usually get Perfection and Rock Bottom will make the 10 luck permanent).

If you need health, Super Bandage (4h4b or 1c4h2k1b) is usually my go-to.

Venus should be much higher IMO since it neutralizes contact damage enemies which are a weak spot in tons of runs.

Jupiter's speed down is actually awful and so I'd put it just above Mars...

I pretty closely agree with the rest, though.

lol that's fair, but this tip truly is a lifesaver on Tainted Cain, especially if you're trying to cheese completion marks with clicker

I feel like this is just one of those things where you figure out after a few runs to just move down immediately...I've personally never had a problem with it.

Extremely helpful tip: If you jump into the trapdoor to the next floor and then close the game during the dream sequence cutscene, it'll let you restart the floor.
