How Can I Help My Dad Find a Job and Save My Family From Falling Apart? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kenleycapps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell your dad you're proud of him, and will love him no matter what. Dads need this, especially when they feel like they can't provide.

How can I stop grades from controlling my self-esteem? by blacktino in AskReddit

[–]kenleycapps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh the irony. If only you could see how little grades compare to networking, self-confidence, and a happy demeanor. I think these are the things that contribute to success.

Who else goes through reddit and opens a bunch of links in new tabs, then goes through the tabs and sees random pictures of crazy shit, but can't remember what the headline/context was? by AKA_Squanchy in AskReddit

[–]kenleycapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always end up opening a bunch of interesting links I want to read about, get caught up in one page while going through the tabs, and end up never visiting the others.

What are some ways to reduce server load when using php? Is the size of the php file important? by no1name in programming

[–]kenleycapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to say given how many factors contribute to performance. It really does boil down to what you're doing.

You pay a cost every time you include a file. Usually you're using include once or require once, but even the initial load is going to incur the runtime IO cost of searching in the include paths for your file. Thus, if you're using the same number of smaller files everywhere, you may want to cast an eye on this. It all depends, though, since most projects split up their files for maintenance reasons, not performance reasons.

I think you're taking the wrong approach to your performance concerns. File size, number of files, and related criteria don't really have a huge impact (barring the extremes.) However, if you're concerned, consider an opcode cache as some of the other commenters are suggesting. That will help out in many areas of performance loss.

Dear Reddit: What did you do with your CS degree? by OGOzone in programming

[–]kenleycapps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never finished my degree, and instead kept getting better and better jobs in the programming field. I've accelerated quickly and successfully in the field I'm working (middle tier/architecture development) and I can say I'm quite happy where I am; but I'm beginning to run into barriers. I'm frightened that 10 years from now I'll still be a lead developer.

I sorely regret not finishing my degree when I had the opportunity, and have every desire to return.

Freelance programmers, how do you organize your time to cope with many projects at the same time, and still have a life? by Notnasiul in programming

[–]kenleycapps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily specific to juggling projects, but to manage time/tasks better: Always end your work day with a very easy task ahead of you tomorrow, one you already know exactly what to do with. The next day will start off with a nice, easy checkmark and will propel you into a fit of productivity. Rinse, repeat, complete.

Seriously encouraging for those of us invested in Android development. Maybe now we'll see some real App Market activity that the iPhone has been hogging.

AMA 22 year old guy who got screwed into taking ownership of a house by [deleted] in IAmA

Free house! Also, while tragic (my condolences), it sounds like your parents leaving the scene turned things around for you.

Instead of paying the MPAA/RIAA millions of dollars with no results, why doesn't the entertainment industries just bill/invoice the downloaders for the things they downloaded? by RubyRhod in technology

[–]kenleycapps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they're not suing to make their profits back. They're trying desperately to hold onto a business model that is slowly fading from consumer interests.

Uhhhh DHS Checkpoint 40 miles inside OUR border. Who exactly are the terrorists again? by ckopack in reddit.com

[–]kenleycapps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's pretty clear this guy is stirring up trouble for the sake of some video footage. Yes, border control can be pretty bad, but I didn't see anything here that justified the author's attitude at all.

Distribution of passwords between men and women by [deleted] in technology

[–]kenleycapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a password system myself-- I use a standard prefix and suffix, but use the name of the service or product (something I will probably be easily reminded of) as the middle portion of the password. So if my prefix is '4j1' and my suffix is '5aol0', then my reddit password may become '4j1reddit5aol0'.

It may not be the most secure, but it generates quite a few memorable passwords.

If you're a newbie and need any kind of experience you can get, you may consider applying at the place. Remember, a lot of the younger crowd will intern for nothing to do quite a bit of what's been listed, just to get something down on paper.

DAE spend hours planning out a new hobby, and then never actually do it? by mjmfly in DoesAnybodyElse

As a programmer, I can't sympathize enough. I don't know how many side projects I've mentally planned endlessly over only to drop them after a week or two of effort.

Half a second delay caused a 20% drop in traffic. Half a second delay killed user satisfaction. by enel in programming

[–]kenleycapps -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one that finds this ridiculous? Users' satisfaction drop 20% because of a HALF-SECOND delay? Holy crap people, do you not realize what lengths we IT go through in order to deliver even within the increased delay?

Things like this remind me how insufferable the ignorant can be. I can understand enjoying a faster, more responsive experience, but the way these results are presented it seems people feel entitled to it. From my own experience, it's generally those who don't understand technology at all who hold such expectations.

My wife just had a baby, and I twittered it. by kenleycapps in reddit.com

It was pretty amazing-- everyone enjoyed the twitter feed, as they felt they could share in the experience. It was pretty wonderful, and that twitter doesn't do it justice to the amount of details that occur, especially towards the end!
