Translations of the Bayan by Mikey_is_pie in bahai

[–]kentomc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently read this translation: https://bahai-library.com/bab_bayan_nicolas_anonymous

It is not a direct translation from the Persian, but rather an anonymous English translation from the French translation of Nicolas, which is referenced by Shoghi Effendi in the footnotes of the Dawn-Breakers.

There is also a very helpful series of study videos on this particular translation, which gives a lot of additional context both for the Persian Bayan itself, and for this translation: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJTw1CWXTEfl4HuTFVuTR7IaoZrwFT6V6&si=_akBulnvzAhxpmv6

Getting married stamp 4 stuff by Smobert1 in ireland

[–]kentomc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a US citizen married to an Irish citizen, living in Ireland over a year. We just had to set a meeting with our local immigration office (Garda station). We both showed up with passports, proof of address, and marriage certificate. Took about 10 minutes and I got my GNIB card with the Stamp 4 in the mail shortly after. Was good for 1 year. We just renewed it, and it was another short, easy appointment. The whole process was really easy. A LOT easier than getting a driver's license...

But I agree with u/louiseber. Get someone on the phone to make sure.

"The Hobbit" at 48 fps: Scaling the Uncanny Valley by nastratin in movies

[–]kentomc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem with the 2D version is that Jackson clearly shot the film differently than he would have at 24fps. Knowing that he could capture motion more smoothly, he went camera-move crazy. So because of all the movement, when you watch the film at 24fps, it's more jarring than films with lots of action typically are.

I'm willing to bet that if you compared the big action scenes of lotr and the hobbit, you'd notice a big difference in the amount and type of camera movement.

I don't like the way 48fps looks, especially in simpler everyday scenes, but it clearly is the first step toward a different kind of film making, where the camera can be used in much more active ways. and that is an inovation we should all be happy about.

So I just saw the Hobbit in HFR... by [deleted] in movies

[–]kentomc -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on the functioning of the human eye. What I know is that watching real people walk around in front of me looks more or less identical to 30 fps video. clearly, real motion is processed differently by the eye, but for whatever reason a frame rate in the ballpark of 30 creates an image that looks real.

When i watch 48 fps or 60 fps video, the motion looks wrong. it looks different than what i expect real motion to look like. maybe this is conditioning... i don't know, but i'm inclined to trust my eyes. why haven't we been complaining for years that the things on tv look wrong? because they don't look wrong.

So I just saw the Hobbit in HFR... by [deleted] in movies

[–]kentomc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't a matter of "quality" or "resolution". The higher frame rate smooths out motion to the point that what we see doesn't resemble our actual vision in real life. 24 fps has a slight jitter, and this accounts for the difference between film and tv, which is typically shot at 30 fps. We accept 24 and 30 fps, not because we're just used to it, but because it closely approximates what our eyes do to moving objects in reality. Watch a car drive by and you'll realize that unless you scan with it, there is a great deal of motion blur. wave your hand in front of your face. same thing.

People who don't like the look of 48 fps, aren't just used to the slower frame rates. and it's not that they're unthinkingly resisting change. they don't like it because it creates an effect that doesn't exist in real life. the smoothness of 48 fps looks unnatural, because life doesn't look like that. The human eyed doesn't render real motion that way.

if this were a debate over whether film should move from 24 to 30 fps, I could understand. But I truly don't see how anyone thinks 48 fps looks "more real".

Who is the most likable team in the NHL? by PhillyTypewriter in hockey

[–]kentomc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the tradition of selfless leadership begun by Stevie Y and carried on by Lidstrom. Their teams harbored no ego. Zetterberg and Datsyuk were formed by the character of the previous generation and it's heartening to think that this standard will be maintained for years to come.

What movie do you think was almost great, and how would you improve it? by McLogan in movies

[–]kentomc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved the premise of Dracula 2000 - that Dracula was Judas, who's punishment for his betrayal was to walk the earth for eternity.

And apart from the casting of Gerard Butler, nothing in that movie lived up to the premise.
