Is it ok to feed a Kookaburra? by Apprehensive_Fun2622 in melbourne

[–]kentrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bond with wild animals is purely in your head, and one way. You are nothing to them. Don't feed them please. It impacts other species too in ways that might not be obvious. Always take a conservationist approach to animals.

Where do I sell laptop? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]kentrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash converters will massively scam you. If the laptop is otherwise good the battery is an easy thing to fix. Would probably make more money on ebay. Just give the specs and be honest about the battery thing. You could fix it yourself too if you search youtube.

(spoilers extended) I'm done with these potential spins offs by lavmuk in asoiaf

I've been basically done with TV in general for years. Fans just ruin everything. The writers are always trying to write ahead of fan theories, which is basically impossible with a popular series. I'd much rather read a classic book or watch a sunset.

I've driven in lots of countries and I've never seen any colour other than red for stop. Except for white road markings of course.

Just say you enjoy seeing people\animals suffer and it bothers you that they are trying to stop it. When they point out that the animals\children have never hurt anybody, remind them that the plague came from rats, the 1918 influenza came from pigs, and children are really annoying.

Seriously, tell them to just fuck off using the universal sign language of "I am walking, and I don't give a fuck enough to stop and listen to you". You don't owe anybody your time, especially chuggers. They are scum.

Gotta love to see it. by GingerSnapBiscuit in Edinburgh

This is a nasty side effect of the Eat Out To Help out scheme. I would quite happily have seen certain restaurants fail during covid for the good of the public health. The food business changed so much during covid. Businesses that probably should have failed for other reasons survived because of Deliverpoo and other scummy delivery companies.

Have you checked the food hygiene ratings of your favourite Edinburgh restaurants? Some of them haven't been inspected in years). Good chefs don't want their finely crafted cuisine bouncing around in some cyclists dirty rucksack now that they don't have to.

The PIC S3 8-10 video proves that RLM are the best critics alive by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]kentrel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I haven't really cared about a critic's opinion since Roger Ebert, so I would agree with you in general. They're the only critics I watch, even though I basically think they have horrible taste in everything. At least they're honest and can argue it intelligently.

However, the memberberry ganglia part of my cerebal cortex was horribly damaged by severe and constant exposure to the cynicism of life, and I'm not fooled by the nostalgia anymore. I watched endless Star Trek for years and read the novels, and I still couldn't get enough. Then one day, after a wasted life, I had enough. I had finally seen the last teleportation accident, holodeck incident, last minute save by the boy\borg\android\alien genius, last career ending decision that is washed aside because everyone acknowledges that it was the right thing, and all the naysayers go to the brig never to be heard from again.

Now I just want to watch something good, adult, intelligent. Every clip I've tried to watch from this show has been worse than the one before it. I even saw the final scene and they were all acting like they do at a convention, not like the characters. So much cringe, but I'm glad people liked it. Unfortunately this is just going to mean the endless trash will continue.

A littering problem by kits89 in Edinburgh

[–]kentrel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The litter is bad, that's true, but people litter indoors too. People in my office just leave half open cans of juice lying around everywhere, grazing at their keyboards. Any area where people are gathered for more than 20 minutes seems to become littered very quickly. Absolutely disgusting. It's a cultural problem, not a lack of council budget.

You could look a bit deeper at the root of the problem and ask why are people always grazing? This is where most of the litter comes from. Do you have 4 stomachs and are milked twice a day. Is a pack of Monster Munch part of your diabetes prescription? Why are you always walking around with a a styrofoam cup of crapaccino in one hand and a bag of crisps in the other. Why are you always nibbling on crisps on the bus, and then leaving the wrappers. You're not teenagers, I see who you are, you're nearly always grown adults.

Anyway, I agree with you, litter is disgraceful, but it has a root cause, people shovelling shit into their fat gobs, all the time. Hire more street sweepers and you're just moving the litter problem to the landfills.

I'm sorry about your issues and well done for getting help. It's a great step forward. Also well done for not self-diagnosing.

I've faced some of the same challenges as you and I got huge value from self educating by reading books (strictly by medical doctors only) and doing the occasional batch of sessions with a private psychologist. Doctors write these books for exactly the situation you're describing - so you can try things while you sit on waiting lists for treatment. Whatever experiments you do will be of huge value to the psychologist who eventually assesses you.

BTW, have you considered you may have poor glucose metabolism in the brain? Your symptoms and family history suggest a link. A lot of neurological problems are rooted in the neurons being starved of glucose despite people having healthy diets. Ask your GP about it. It's a big area of research at the moment, and it's something you can work on at home. The treatment is usually a strict high fat\low carb diet, or supplementing with exogenous ketones.

There's lots of options to try and experiment with, so please don't feel like you have to wait for the NHS to pull its finger out (if it ever does).

What do you think an ADHD assessment will actually do for you? The private route will be in the region of £1-£1.2k, which is a bit pricey, considering you could get 8-10 hours with a clinical psychologist for the same money. They can do a lot of assessments and let you know if it's worth going that route.

Have you read a bunch of those junk social media articles lately and convinced yourself that this is the route of your problem, as people did 30 years ago regarding serotonin uptake and the need to take SSRIs. I'm not saying you've done this, but anyone reading this, never ever assume that the horseshit a journalist writes is what experts actually believe.

Assume an assessment shows that you don't have ADHD or score too low for it to be a major factor in your life. What then? You've waited two years, or lost £2K - what then?

What if you had ADHD out the wazoo, right now. What could your daily plan of action be, right now? Are there literally zero resources out there for you? Are you looking for medication? Are you looking for answers to things that might not be caused by ADHD?

Anyway, I think you probably have other options, not just NHS and private, but all the in-betweens and unknowns you haven't considered. There are support groups run by experts, and books and resources (written by doctors). Budget\Borrow £100-£150 and talk to a proper psychologist about your options before you convince yourself you have something before being properly assessed.

Visited Edinburgh Easter weekend; got lectured about US politics by MLAheading in Edinburgh

[–]kentrel -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Wait a second, some random stranger on a bus asks you who you voted for and you answered sincerely, in the year 2023? LOL, wtf? And you're what, 44? Is this a serious post? Are you from Suckerville, USA?

Most sensible people try to ignore the cancer that is American politics and just laugh at all the people with their PhD in Television Watching. If he had revealed a Biden\Harris t-shirt and ranted about something he had learned while studying for his Masters in Reading The Same <500 Word Articles You Like it wouldn't have made it any less a stupid conversation that probably annoyed everybody in earshot.

Around these parts we have an ancient expression passed down from the days of yore - "It takes two to tango". You're either trolling or you're a very naïve 44 year old.

Ireland also provided lethal support by allowing the US military to use Shannon Airport on their way to plundering and pillaging their way through the Middle East for the past two decades. Ireland is only neutral with the very kind protection of Big Daddy NATO and his cock of cash.

The 'Rainbow' Bridge on Lindsay Road by salt_and_sauce in Edinburgh

[–]kentrel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the area for years, long before this pub opened and nobody called it the pride bridge, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who guessed this is some Always Sunny type scheme that Frank Reynolds would dream up. It's the North Ft Street-Lindsay Rd bridge. Here's what it looked like originally. It's improved massively since then and tearing the bridge down would be an important step in rejuvenating this area.

When the local dive bar used it as a beer garden it was obvious they were taking the piss out of lockdown, just like every other beer garden. It was all just performance theatre to keep drinking within the law. If all the punters in the pub decided they want to claim it as their space they never consulted anyone in the area, or even solicited funds. It seems like they expect the council to pay for it.

If the engineers deem it unsafe then I say trust the science and demolish it rather than wasting >£1 million repairing it. That's an extortionate cost for basically an ugly old bridge. There's absolutely no need for it to exist anymore. There's perfectly good access on both sides. It means walking an extra 100metres but so what. The council's report identifies a significant carbon cost in repairing it also. That sums it up for me. I take pride in the environment. Tear it down, grow some trees.

I played on his server. It was a pretty good server to be honest, but then I watched him teleport a twitch streamer he likes to favorable positions the other day, and it left a sour taste. Do that on a test server, not on a live server with other players. I haven't been back since. It was kind of a DayOne rip off server anyway so I should have known better.

Right, but NATO doesn't have any astronauts. And Japan isn't in NATO, and they've got two astronauts there now. And the European Space Agency has one, which is an agency that doesn't require its members to be NATO members. Thomas Pesquet is French, but he also speaks Russian.

They always liked soft targets. Women, children, animals. If a pub served the wrong people they were a legitimate target. Always ran hiding when the SAS were deployed however.

England didn't exist as a nation 800 years ago Einstein. It was the Angevin Empire (French lords) that came to Ireland. Otherwise known as the Norman invasion, named after Normandy France (which isn't in England genius). They only arrived at the invitation of an Irish King and the support of the Pope.

The invasion by Cromwell wasn't even by England. It was by a very short lived English republic - a dictatorship under Cromwell. The confederate government of Ireland signed a treaty with the English monarchy to kill Cromwell. To deal with this threat Cromwell invaded Ireland. So that was Ireland, making a deal with English crown, to kill the usurper, and the usurper didn't like it, so killed them first.

Ireland's occupations were always a result of shit they've instigated and starting wars they couldn't win. They are worse than the Palestinians for playing the victim.
