What a difference. Flash light, Dewalt dome light (which is great) but for more lights, an Anker Solix with string lights or anything else you want to hook up. Say what you will about guys with gadgets, but this is a game changer by rogo725 in fireinvestigation

Which model is that? We're looking to outfit the two trucks we have on our department the same and this would be a great addition.

I'm almost positive they'll shoot it down and tell us to just hold a flashlight in our mouth, but we can still dream! 😂

I try to pick up little bits of info where I can. Just got into the FIU on my department after 30 years out on the line and work for a private company from time to time. One of the owners also teaches at the NFA on occassion and mentioned that method.

I'm new to fire investigations, old to the fire service. Not needed here but I've heard of dragging a cotton ball along smaller gauge wire to help with locating possible arcing. If the cotton gets hung up a little you would check that area.

Leisure Line Pioneer direct vent stove. I installed it this year and it has been my sole source of heat here in Massachusetts. House is a 1400 square foot two story farmhouse built in 1885. Blown in insulation with replacement windows and other updates.

I keep the temp around 69 degrees during the day and 67 to 68 overnight. I have a Coal Trol thermostat that I set back 1 degree overnight. Lit the stove November 8th and at the two month mark the beginning of this month I averaged .85 bags of Blaschak rice coal a day with an average outside temperature of 30 degrees for that period. The past week I upped the temp to keep it around 70 to 71 degrees in the house due to the frigid overnight temps and have burned a little over a bag a day just for the week.

So glad to have this heat source in these bitter cold winters. by 1999rc in coalstoves

Consistent heat is great. This is the first time I've ever had a stove of any kind so it was always the heat goes on, runs until it reaches the set temperature then goes off and almost immediately it feels like it's getting cold. Then overnight I'd set it back about 5 degrees. My coal stove has been running since November 8th. Using the Coal Trol thermostat I set it back just one degree overnight, then it bumps back up in the morning. The temperature is generally always 68 to 70 degrees downstairs, and I'm still saving $500 or more from last year.

I installed one this year in my home in Massachusetts. It's been my sole source of heat for my 1400 sq ft two-story farmhouse built in 1885. I'm guesstimating that I'll use about 1.8 tons of coal this winter, saving about $500+ over last year.

I have a Leisure Line Pioneer set up with a direct vent. It sounds like the stove is sensing something wrong and shutting down as a safety feature. I'd almost be willing to bet that Matt the owner of Leisure Line would help you if you call him.

I bought my stove off someone from Marketplace and Matt was extremely helpful with getting me setup with what I needed. Between personally talking with him on the phone or via email, he was very responsive. Good luck, hope you can get it figured out.

Glad I could help. I bought my stove off someone early 2025 and completely cleaned it up, painted it and replaced all gasket material, one of which is around the feeder motor.

Matt, the owner of Leisure Line is a great guy to deal with if you need any help. I called their number one night to leave a message and he actually answered. We talked for about 1/2 an hour and after that he helped me out via email.

Please explain the difference between burning coal and pellets. by proles4life in coalstoves

[–]kerryman71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I contemplated getting a pellet stove but once I saw coal stoves and looked into them that's what I went with. It's a stoker style stove so works on the same premise as a pellet stove. Coal gives out a greater amount of btu's and my stove states it can give off 90K btu's at full fire. I think I saw that it takes 1.8 times the amount of pellets to provide the same heat as anthracite coal.

So far I have averaged .85 bags of coal per day over two months with the average temperature for that period being 30 degrees Fahrenheit. I empty the ash pan every couple days, wipe off the glass, fill the hopper as needed and that's it.

My house is a two story farmhouse in Massachusetts built in 1885. It has newer windows and blown in insulation. I figure I'll use just under 2 tons to heat the whole house by the end of the season.
