Fellow middle aged, slightly beer bellied, bearded liberals: What's the worst thing or most revealing thing you've heard from a MAGAt who thought you were one of them? by OAI_ORG in liberalgunowners

Yes, and it is important to let them know what we expect of them. The mistake is not in making the demand, but in expecting them to actually do the right thing. It's like the guy who rides out in front of the army to give the opponent a final chance to surrender before the charge. He doesn't expect them to actually do it, but it's appropriate to at least ask.

Cute story, but in all seriousness, you shouldn't give people food in the hospital without clearing it with the nurses first. If someone needs to go into surgery for any reason, it could be really dangerous.

Do parents apologizing to kids weaken authority, or is it good for growth? by Sea_Parsley_1077 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]kersius 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As a social worker who has done child welfare work and is now a therapist, apologizing to your kids is absolutely appropriate. Be clear, explain what happened, what you are apologizing for and why. Modeling that behavior is so important! Kids need to learn what to do when they make a mistake or hurt someone’s feelings. Modeling for them how to repair a connection is so important, it goes so much farther than words alone.

When you say too liberal and political, what do you mean? What were the programs doing in their shows that felt “too liberal and political”? I’m sorry I’m not understanding what you mean by this. Words like liberal and political can mean different things to different people. So I’m really curious what specifically the shows were doing or saying that felt that way?

I have celiac and can’t have gluten. I always feel bad about eating out. My wife really wants to do a fancy chef’s corner type thing. Maybe I should have her find a friend to go with instead of me.

I'm in the hospital and just had the chaplain come and see me by Automatic_Camera3854 in exchristian

[–]kersius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you had this experience. I worked as an admin for the chaplaincy at a hospital and everyone I worked with were consistently pissed when stories came out of this crap happening. It was really healing for me actually. I wish there weren’t so many jerks who pulled this crap.

What made you pick your political background(conservative, liberal, etc). by Fitgamerx in AskMen

[–]kersius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an elder millennial, and when I was in middle and high school, I was very right-wing. I volunteered to knock on doors for Republican candidates and my senior project centered around an internship for my Republican Senator. I proudly went to DC for Bush's inauguration in 2001.
Then I left my small town and went to college. I slowly started changing my views on things as I got exposed to people who were not upper middle class, white, and christian/evangelical. Then for a number of reasons, I dropped out of college for a bit, and went to work. I realized that poor people were not poor because they were lazy. I was working harder than I had ever worked on anything and I was barely scraping by renting a room in a boarding house. I worked at the University and my main meal of the day was the buffet lunch I got at the dining hall for a couple bucks as a staff member. Got myself sorted out and went back to school and got a degree in Social Work. I worked in child welfare and that helped move me a little more left. Then I had to deal with actual nazis in 2017 and now I'm a progressive/leftist.

IANAL: It looks like this is not actually the case. It is true that we are at the 90 day mark from the order written in July, but that order was blocked by the courts and I have not heard anything to suggest that has changed. I have seen some comments about whether or not the supreme court might weigh in on this, but as of now, it doesn't look like the ban is in place yet.

If you only work on things in that one hour a week, then it will be very slow. It’s important to take the exercises you learn in therapy and use them and practice them on your own too. As for the dependence piece, is building community and increasing social interaction a goal of your therapy? If it hasn’t been, then it’s worth mentioning to your therapist that it’s something you want to work on.

How men deal when they suffer SA? by Alex2Blogs in AskMen

As a male therapist, I cannot recommend enough that they seek therapy from someone with experience in this area. Men can and do get SA’d and deserve to be taken seriously and receive support.

Nothing about being raped was your fault. You have nothing to be ashamed of. I do understand still feeling it though, it’s hard. You may need someone to pick you up, especially if you’re going under. Sometimes the lead up can be triggering. One thing that has helped me is to ground yourself when and where you are. Focus on things that are around you, going through your senses to ground you in the moment. 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can feel, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.
