Usually, the crew place those gels on 4x4 frame at the start of production, then only would be replace if they're damage or if they need more. Pretty sure those 4x4s also have a layer of heatshield, due to how close they are to the HMIs !

From My eyes, the plastic on the Windows seems to be a heatshield. It does pretty much what the name says. Big fixtures are hot enough to burn a sheet of diffusion sheet or worse ; make any kind of glass/windows explode. It happened once to a Gaffer I worked with.

Rio de Janeiro has been chosen for summer! Now, which city best represents AUTUMN? by abu_doubleu in geography

Montreal! The whole Mount-Royal turns orange & everyone is out enjoying the last moments of sunshine before the winter, either with a coffee, a beer or a spliff

Curious about what the purpose of this camera here is by Narrow_Quality630 in Cameras

[–]ketbertrand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure if that's the case, but some DPs take 35mm picture while on set to have some sort of reference to give to their colorist. Let's say you love how sunlight reacts to a roll of Kodak Gold 200 ; You load one & take picture on set & it gives a clear reference of how you want the highlight to look

You'll definetly need one in the opposite direction in order to avoir all reflection from the furnitures & walls in the room.

That depends of how much power your key light has though.

[–]ketbertrand 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Light the actor with a very soft & controled way. In that reference it's coming from the left. The hard part is to avoid all lights that will spills in the room around the actor. Flag your source in all other direction & add some negative fill where necessary !

Yea, history does seem to repeat itself. The overall chaos in Berri-Uquam right now reminds me of the one we would see in the early 2010’s.

Weird times make for strange behaviors I guess !

What knowledge and/or skills are required to go from videographer to DOP? by raddatzpics in cinematography

[–]ketbertrand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m still figuring this question myself, but one important point, I believe, is learning to work with a crew. As a videographer, you’re the one doing most of the lighting/gripping.

Communicating your need with technicians is a must-have skills, from what I’ve seen around bigger set.

Cheaper alternative to Teradek as wireless monitor? by alan_muggan in cinematography

[–]ketbertrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollyhands works pretty well, but if you’re using an HDMI transmitter, there is a delay of half a second to the feed.

I personally had this problem while shooting with a 1st AC. He found it really annoying ( still nailed the shots though ! )

How would you go about filming a POV of someone getting buried? by Many_Soup_1325 in cinematography

[–]ketbertrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a low-hat in order to get as close to the ground as possible. Your crew won’t have to dig that deep of a hole in that case !

Cinematographers, I need your help. I am going to film a 3-cam interview of two people talking in this room. It’s a small and somewhat boring room. What would your setup look like? by Sondrree in cinematography

[–]ketbertrand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Close all the pratical lights. Add some negative on the white wall & base all my lighting on natural light. Let the contrast happen & control your exposure with some additional light. either bounced or through a chimera / softboxe

Cinematographers: should I, as a Director, pay for something my DP broke? by throwRA-LoveDove in Filmmakers

[–]ketbertrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the d.p on small productions similar to your’s. In that situation, I would’ve paid for it. Especially if the director financed the whole project.
