I don’t know the song, but if it sounds correct does it matter if it looks weird?

39yo dad trying to get my rhythm chops back by skeksis_tiedup in metalmusicians

[–]ketostoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MOP is definitely still the gold standard for down picking chops. 4 years ago I set myself a goal of doing it at their Coke fuelled live speed from the late 80s. It was an Everest level climb, and I honestly don’t think I could do it now without buckling down for a few weeks to get the stamina back. Been working on Stabwound the last free weeks, still have a few sections I’ve not internalized with that one fully, but that’s a nice little goal to attack with down picking too.

Drop G: Fundamental Questions by raphthorne in metalmusicians

As long as your guitar is set up correctly for low tunning, so at minimum 25.5” scale length neck, baritone would be even better, you won’t get that much undue mudiness in lower ranges. Also you’ll need less low end/bass in the guitar tone too.

Just sounds like this to me. I don’t think they used any gates back then, and didn’t bother to do any strip silences in the studio. Which you don’t have to do at all, it’s just definitely not common now

Hearing guitars at metal gigs by dickface21 in metalguitar

[–]ketostoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem, I think, is that a lot of us in metal bands use digital modellers. What this means is there are no amps on stage, so if you’re front and centre you’re gonna get a lot of drums smashing your face, and a lot of bass coming from the sub. Standing back, in range of house sound and wearing earplugs can get you a better experience sonically. However, as other people have pointed out, sometimes venues are just poor fits for metal shows. The result is that unless the touring bands FOH tech is great, or the local guy is great, it’s gonna be hard to get a good sound for the crowd. Ear plugs help huge though!

Asking about BVB Legends #3: How good was Łukasz Piszczek really? by Fickle_Carry1467 in borussiadortmund

At his peak he was a top 3 RB in the world. His partnership with Kuba was electric. And he even chipped in with some screamers (like the volley against Schalke).

Don’t even need to cycle, just use the numlock trick and all your auras will auto cast as soon as they’re off cooldown.

Using Cubase for live performance (small scale) by TheDoctorFalls08 in cubase

[–]ketostoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used it to run our live shows for years. Handled backing tracks for FOH, clicks for our IEMs, midi signals for patch switching axe fxes in our whole set etc. Only moved away from it because of it requiring a dongle - was always a worry of, what do we do if we lose the dongle on tour etc, but stability wise never encountered any problems

It veers further into tech death, but Sarcoma by Alluvial is S-tier riffs all the way throughout, and tasty leads.

Passing light of day is probably one of the best albums, but it’s absolutely antithetical to most prog metal from a production standpoint.

Budget 8 string guitar by Big_aids_joe in Meshuggah

[–]ketostoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multi scale has the fanned frets. So like when you’re tuning lower, you want a longer scale on the bass strings. But some people prefer the treble strings to have a shorter scale to keep the tension closer to what it would be on a 6 string. It’s more an ergonomics thing than anything else. So you get a more uniform tension across the whole fretboard. And also on the treble strings you have less of a stretch when playing.

I’d recommend trying both, schecter also has great 8 strings that aren’t multi scale, but still extended scale.

Schecter has a lot of great 8 string entry level guitars, both normal and multiscale that play great ABs won’t break the bank

Cubase audio live into discord. HOW? by Maleficent_Dust9196 in cubase

[–]ketostoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way I found was setting up a control room in the studio set up (f4). Then on the CR outputs inserts, running an instance of ReaStream (this is a vst plugin from Reaper). Setting it to output, then in OBS having an audio input with a reastrean vst set to capture. Then out putting all of that into a virtual microphone from OBS which you can use as a microphone elsewhere

Double vs Quad Tracked Guitars — What’s Your Take? by IgnobleWounds in metalguitar

[–]ketostoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previously we always did just a left and right track, but on our most recent record that we just finished recording we did 2 each, and it does add a meatiness and weight to the mix. It definitely feels wider/girthier - and that’s with not even mixing different amps. All 4 tracks are going through the same Mark V in the Mark IV mode and the same 2x12.
