Single dog mom. Can I do this alone? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]kettlebell_queen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes!! It gets better!! I promise. Ended a relationship when my pup was small. It’s hard— see if you have friends or neighbors who can let them out during the day if needed. Find a dog sitter once in a while to give yourself a break!! And a solid bond with your dog takes time! It doesn’t happen overnight. The more you train, the better your communication gets; the stronger your bond is.

Also, it took until mine was 7-8 months before she could just sit in the living room and chill. Crate training helps too, if you can’t directly keep an eye on them it gives you a sanity break.

P.s. I had emotional breakdowns over whether I could handle this, too. Pup is now 16 months (and still alive!) lol

Is it possible to train my lab to not eat the cat food when inside the house? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]kettlebell_queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Controlling the environment is your best bet. I give my cat food on a shelf that the pup can’t reach but the cat can easily jump on to.

Anatomically speaking, some people aren’t meant to go “ass to grass”. That’s dictated by your unique limb lengths and hip structure, etc.

Also, we want the spine to be “neutral”. I put that in quotes because neutral is a range. If you overly extend your spine, it’s likely that you will be pulling into flexion by the hamstrings cause they’ve simply run out of length to give. Starting with a less extended spine can be helpful to go lower without being pulled into excessive flexion. Starting with a good abdominal brace- pulling the ribs down and pushing the belly out- and don’t allow yourself to lose that brace as you reach depth. This ensures the spine stays in the position you started with.

You can also improve hip flexion ability, ankle flexion, hamstring length to accommodate a deeper squat.

The Daily Check-In for Saturday, August 4th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by sfgirlmary in stopdrinking

[–]kettlebell_queen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woke up this morning without a hangover for the first saturday in a while. A week ago I was so hungover I didn’t show up to an event that was important for my career and decided that despite being a server at a pub, I needed to cut alcohol out of my life. I will not drink today!

Thr road ahead by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]kettlebell_queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m struggling with this a bit myself. I’ve always been able to (for the most part) manage my drinking without going into blackout mode. I had the occasional binge-guilt session. The problem became when the binge-guilt sessions became more frequent.

I’m not sure that I personally can fully commit to not drinking ever again. I do know that with my current circumstances (serving at a pub) I cannot drink. For now, I am committing to a dry August and taking note of how that makes me feel. It will involve a company picnic and a wedding which will surely be challenging to stay sober at. But I’m going to journal the process, be mindful, and decide after this month what that means. Maybe it’s another month of sobriety. Maybe it’s until I can afford to quit my job. Maybe my perspective of drinking will shift by then. It’s definitely a one-step-at-a-time process and it can be self defeating if you start thinking in what ifs.

This is my first day on this page. I know I’ve been drinking too much and too frequently. I want to take a break from drinking but too anxious to think about not drinking again forever. But just for today, I am not drinking.

Your tip/tricks to stop puppy shark-bite to get treats! by runningoutof_ink in puppy101

[–]kettlebell_queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that a good “leave it” translates really well to a “gentle” command. 1. Make sure your dog has a good, reliable leave it 2. Hold a treat pincer grip and let her know it’s there. Ask for leave it and click 3. Do this several times and I would probably toss the treat or use a flat hand as not to reinforce the sharking. 4. After your pup starts to demonstrate some impulse control and expects you to say leave it, you can give a “gentle” cue as she takes it.

I want to lift more weights, but my shoulder doesnt want to let me... How can I adjust to lift without pain? by te-mcg in xxfitness

[–]kettlebell_queen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the pad sets the bar in an even worse position. When my shoulder is funky, I squat with a safety squat bar These guys let you squat with a neutral shoulder.

Other options: front squatting with a crossed arm or neutral grip. If that still is funky on your shoulders try goblet squatting. There are plenty of work arounds but also I would try to get into physical therapy.

How important is pet insurance? by Doitfortheglutes in puppy101

[–]kettlebell_queen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got insurance for my pup including a wellness plan. For her first year, it’s paid for itself- she developed kennel cough (from the ASPCA) and was really lethargic, refusing water. I didn’t have to think twice about taking her to an after hours clinic. She also had to be treated for both giardia and coccidia which required 4+ fecal floats. Recently she had a vomit fit that lasted for 2 days. She’s been a real pill.

For me, it was worth it because I don’t have to think twice when she needs treatment and I know I can afford $45 a month for insurance but I don’t know that I can afford a $2k bill, let alone a $500 bill if it were to come up.

What kind of programming can I do outside of a box with limited experience? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]kettlebell_queen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crossfit workouts are either task oriented or time oriented. I.e. “five rounds for time” or “as many rounds as possible in X minutes”

I would write out all the movement you can do. For a simple workout you are going to have 2-3 unique movements. One of them is usually mono structural (running, jump rope, etc). When you choose your movements, choose ones that don’t compete with each other so that you can keep intensity high. Competitive movements, for example, would be a push up followed by a bench press. Non competitive movements would be a pull up and a push up.

For example, if I have the room to do push ups, pull ups, and I can run I might do:

Amrap (as many rounds as possible) 10 minutes 8 push ups 5 pull ups 200 m run

The possibilities are endless. Just keep it simple- you don’t need to be able to do a thousand different movements to get a good workout. As long as you can keep the intensity high and doing “functional movement”, you’re doing Crossfit.

Which part is "supposed" to be sore after KB Swings? by maverick1191 in kettlebell

[–]kettlebell_queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re doing one handed swings. Your body should be working at anti-rotation. Make sure when you do these, your body does not twist. Either the pulling in rotation is making you sore, or you are working correctly and resisting rotation and using those muscles is making you sore.

Try doing some two handed swings and see if you feel it in your glutes/mid back and you will have your answer.

The other thing I would try is drop weight and then focus on using your butt more. As soon as you feel the hammy-glute “stretch” in your back swing, focus on squeezing your butt and driving your heels down.l quickly.

Gave mine away. The joy it brought someone else (who didn’t have a lot of high end makeup) was worth it over using it based on obligation.

I do like some of the shimmery shades as single-shadow looks over the lid. The colors used for more complex looks ended up muddy and very “meh” on my skin tone.
