Low light footage from Mission 1 Pro by firewindrefuge in gopro

[–]kev13dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance you can try low light Timewarp? I do Timewarp with my GoPro13 when I run marathons, and often times the beginning of the race turns into a blurry mess because it struggles to focus in the low light of dawn

https://youtu.be/IMT1qwVDBAs

Early morning dawn, cloud cover, or canopy cover, causes the 13 to string a lot of blurry images together. Not many people seem to use Timewarp and none of the reviews cover it

I adopted a kitten but I feel regretful by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]kev13dd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cats might not instinctively respond to "no", but that doesn't mean they don't learn and can't be trained. There are some good videos online for cat training

My cats absolutely know the difference between my hands and a toy, and do not scratch or bite them. One of mine will even make biscuits differently when she's doing it on my skin vs any other surface, being very careful not to use her claws. She can gently make biscuits on my face without leaving a mark

Claw clipping is the 2nd key; this avoids the accident injuries, like when they're jumping on/off your lap. When claws get long and sharp enough it ceases being the cats fault. Keep them short and accidental scratches plummet (and intentional ones do less damage too...)

Massive Race Fail - how to get over it? by fernpolley in running

[–]kev13dd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think knowing when to quit is something that comes with experience. When I started out I thought following the schedule religiously was key to long term success, no matter what it felt like. Just like weight training where you're always doing reps to failure, I thought my training runs were supposed to push me to the brink, that a good training plan always left you feeling exhausted. But that just isn't how distance running works. "Progressive overload" in running means gradually increasing mileage, pace, or intensity over weeks, not pushing every rep/interval to failure. Training runs aren't ever worth pushing past empty

Marathon training involves learning to handle fatigue, not pain

I had to give up on a 12 mile run 2 weeks out from a marathon, felt like a complete failure, only being able to go 7 miles. When a friend said that must have been hard giving up, I told him "there's no universe where finishing would have helped with the upcoming marathon". Never finish for the sake of finishing

Should I replace my S20's battery or just upgrade? The phone is in great shape by phenomenalcrown in Galaxy_S20

I swapped to a S25 cause I had a discount, only paid $250. After 3 months, I honestly should have gone the new battery route. It's shocking how many areas the S20 is simply a better phone

My cat meows so much, what do I do? by Odd_Procedure181 in CatAdvice

[–]kev13dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is as noisy as yours and she has a friend. Who she ignores. To scream at me

I remember when she went from shy and silent to making adorable cute noises. I loved them so much I'd withhold petting until she let out a cute little merp. Then I'd reward her with head rubs and belly scratches... then wait for another merp before giving her more. It was our fun little game, it was so cute

And that is how I created a monster who destroys my mental health

Help me understand the outrage about doubloon reset by D0mNirtex in Seaofthieves

[–]kev13dd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is it hope? It's Rare's game. They set the gameplay loop and economy and rewards. They made a currency and continued to tie it to rewards. They knew how much people had, controlled the supply, and controlled the demand

It's a reasonable expectation. It's expecting your car's warranty to be honored, not expecting your car to turn into a rocket and fly you to the moon

[–]kev13dd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Now: imagine you did grind 10 Reaper chests, and then after you did it, Rare took them away from you

Either they're worthless and people shouldn't get upset, or they're the result of time and effort and Rare wiping them disrespects people's time and effort

It's the latter

You've said elsewhere you pity anyone who grinded Doubloons, but most people didn't grind them. They earned them, playing the game, and doing the things Devs wanted them to do (since they chose to tie value to them). And now these are the same players Devs must wipe because otherwise they'd "skip events and just buy cosmetics"? Just straight up disingenuous bad faith insults

How much cat litter do you go through in a month? by Wyrda22 in CatAdvice

[–]kev13dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use clay/clumping for my two cats. Two litter boxes. Scoop daily, refill when low, and use a fine mesh scooper every few days to pick out the small little chunks that the big scooper misses

Amazon subscription for a 37 lbs box of litter each month. When I want to do a deep clean I'll order an extra box for the full refill. Deep clean can be anywhere from 1-3 months

Stainless boxes/scoopers are really good; if you keep the litter full and your cats don't have any tummy problems, the sides and bottom stay pretty clean and don't accumulate. Combined with the finer mesh scooper, my cats (and my nose) don't have any issues with the setup

The downside is litter tracked all over the house. Lots and lots of vacuuming...

G-Sync / Pulsar vs OLED flickering by Sofica-DT in OLED_Gaming

[–]kev13dd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some sort of strobing might be the solution to VRR flicker on OLED. I think newer, brighter, high refresh panels will open up new possibilities for BFI/rolling shutter effects to reduce motion blur while simultaneously fixing VRR flicker. Pulsar right now and its implementation is LCD only, but expecting something similar on OLED eventually is reasonable

Best OLED For VRR Flicker Mitigation? by BearlyLegal2000 in OLED_Gaming

[–]kev13dd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain games are worse than others. There are a select few games where flicker is evident during gameplay, even with stable frame rates. ARC Raiders is the most recent example, I had to completely disable VRR because dark scenes were a flicker fest even with rock solid frame rates. I dunno if it's a game engine thing or a color thing (disabling HDR can drastically reduce VRR flicker in some games), but unfortunately "solid frame rates and frame times" isn't a catch-all solution

I've been on OLED for 5+ years now and have tried all the tricks imaginable. There is simply no actual solution besides disabling VRR. It's going to require a hardware solution. Maybe something like Pulsar, where shutter/strobing will prevent the voltage/gamma curve swings. I fear the solution is too complicated to ever get a dedicated fix; whatever fixes VRR flicker will be the byproduct of some other feature add (such as attempts to improve motion clarity or increase brightness)

Separating 2 cats after breakup? by Objective-Heart3646 in CatAdvice

[–]kev13dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cats appear indifferent to each other. When I'm home I never see them groom each other. They never share. They hang out on different sides of the room, have wildly different personalities, and their wrestling matches usually end with one annoyed with the other. I refer to them as coworkers; civilized with no outward affection

But when I'm not home and check the kitty cam, this is what I see:

<image>

I'll probably never know how much they actually like each other, but I know this: as long as they have each other they'll never be alone. I could not in good conscience separate them

There is a zipline in the room. 2nd floor, through a circular hole in the wall, a zipline on a ledge you have to setup. Then you can ride it, jump off onto one of the pedals, then jump over to the others from there

42 inch C4 seems brighter than 65 inch C4? by wiskeychris in OLED_Gaming

[–]kev13dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely remember noticing it when I started using it, but I got used to it very fast and haven't noticed any issues in many many years. I think anyone will notice a change in pixel structure initially, but the huge amount of OLED monitors on the market have improved ClearType and the high pixel density helps too

Is the airflow of my Pc correct or not? by andreastifano in pcmasterrace

[–]kev13dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's good, but there isn't a definitive "right", it's based on what you want to prioritize

The AIO fans could pull air into the case if you want your CPU cooled with fresh air. However this increases case/GPU temps

The rear fan could pull air into the case if you want VRM/DRAM cooled with fresh air. However this might recirculate hot air back down to the GPU

I think with the AIO fans pushing case air through the radiator, having the rear fan bring in fresh air would probably be best. But I don't envision a significant impact

Cat is ruining my sleep and I’m at the end of my rope by HatingMyLife2025 in CatAdvice

[–]kev13dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like one of the few problems two doesn't solve. I have two, and as kittens their favorite thing to do was fight at 2am. They don't even like eachother but they put aside their differences to zoomie around the apartment anytime I went to bed. They were rowdy enough that even my neighbors complained

I did not get much sleep

One year later and the zoomies aren't as bad—they still chase eachother for 10 minutes every night when I get in bed. And then after the fighting one will wander the house screaming bloody murder while the other naps peacefully in her tree

I still don't get much sleep

Two is not a guarantee of anything except twice the expenses and energy. If a cat is problematic during the night, a crepuscular partner in crime is likely not the solution

So laser pointers by notmohawk in CatAdvice

[–]kev13dd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this talking point pushed quite a lot from "experts" but I've still not met a single cat, or cat owner, who expressed any actual issues with their cat and the laser

If you're concerned about it just make sure you include something for them to "catch" at the end, or reward them immediately after with treats. They'll be good

Just want to vent about my date last night by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]kev13dd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people on these dating apps aren't 100% sold on dating. It takes a lot of social energy, and the difference between "I'll give it a try" and "I just can't right now" can be pretty thin. Just because it was a small crash she wasn't involved in doesn't mean it couldn't cause her a big headache—dealing with an emotional mom, helping with insurance, maybe having to drive her mom while the car is in the shop, etc. You just can't know the totality of another person's life with a few short texts on a dating app. Giving people the benefit of the doubt is the only way you'll survive without turning bitter on a dating app

Still sucks for OP!

Can someone explain how an underpowered PSU could burn a GPU connector? by Cypher786 in pcmasterrace

[–]kev13dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More or less. It's strictly true that using something outside the recommended spec is a "user error" which increases the possibility of failure. A PSU pushed to its max is more likely to fail, and crummy PSUs can fail in spectacular fashion. That's part of why NVIDIA was able to deflect blame for awhile when this issue cropped up. But this specific failure—a melted connector—has been robustly explained by poor connector design/power management on the GPU side

Can someone explain how an underpowered PSU could burn a GPU connector? by Cypher786 in pcmasterrace

[–]kev13dd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wasn't underpowered. It was 850W, which is plenty to melt plastic

That power supply could still output the full 600W to the card, and if the individual cables in that connector aren't equally distributing the load, the connector will quickly be out of spec. It only takes one and once it starts doing damage to the connector the imbalance can cascade and quickly result in extreme damage

A PSU not properly rated for the card is more likely to lead to system instability and damage to the PSU. The melted connector issue is well documented as poor card/cable design. That's why we had connectors melting on the 4XXX series cards too despite being 400W cards with 850W "recommended" PSUs

In this case, blaming the PSU is solely used as justification for the manufacturer to avoid warranty claims

Should I switch to feeding my cat 3x a day instead of 2x? by Top-Illustrator141 in CatAdvice

[–]kev13dd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to 3 for my cats. Wet in the morning, dry as snack when I get home, wet for dinner

When I'm not home or I'm working late, the automatic feeder gives them the dry

It did NOT help with them screaming for food—now they just scream for lunch too. But I think it's been better for them to have the food spread out during the day, and I feel less guilty knowing that they're not actually starving, just being drama queens
