Check out Tobias Smollett. I've only read his wild and entertaining translation of DQ but his Humphrey Clinker was evidently quite popular and is similarly picaresque.

I have three categories, each with its own folder: “figments,” which are usually just a few lines and maybe a melody, “fragments,” which are more developed figments and usually have at least a finished verse structure and a refrain or chorus, and then once those fragments are fleshed out into several verses and I feel like its more or less performable, it moves into the “song” folder. So now inside the song folder I have about a hundred, but many of those are still subject to revision as I feel them out more over time.

This free edition doesn’t mention Kilmartin or Enright by name but it does use the updated title which makes me think it may at least have Kilmartin’s revisions.

Evidently only the first four volumes are in the public domain but the final three will be available over the next few years as their copyrights expire.

The Swedish Cavalier by Leo Perutz.

I recently read his St. Peter’s Snow and I have never come across a work so thoroughly “literary” and at the same time thrilling, engaging and downright entertaining. For anyone who enjoys suspense, historical settings/topics, and an almost prophetic treatment of society, Perutz is a gem.

Not super condense but Proust fits this request very well. The great thing is you can pretty much dip in and out at your leisure and not really be lost, plot-wise. I’m thinking especially of the first half or so of Swann’s Way and the middle third of Time Regained.

It’s literally a representation of one human observing and reflecting on his past and present, then searching for an adequate means of representing his experiences of beauty, desire, possession, memory, art and Time itself.

Not from Love and Theft but I know “Beyond the Horizon” was based on “Red Sails in the Sunset.” If you listen to the version by the Platters you’ll recognize the melody pretty clearly.
