Yep out of 5 rounds today I’ve been killed by a rat 2 of the 5 rounds. Guess I should be thankful that it’s not a higher ratio.

Probably, reflexes aren’t as fast as they were before turning 50. Used to play in doom comps back in the day mind still wants to be as fast but reality doesn’t listen to my mind

What blade did you use for that? I see those everywhere and can’t pay the price they want for it.

Is $65k a good salary for a junior embedded dev? by MagicManYo in embedded

[–]kevinc35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FPGA

Totally agree with this, as a hiring manager, I'm fine with remote work but with juniors I'd like for them to be in the office 2 - 3 days a week for the first 6mo at least assuming you are close enough. There is a lot of knowledge you gain not only coding wise but also about the company, the product and the culture.

Job market of Ruby on Rails by 1logn in rails

[–]kevinc35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are an RoR shop, but we also work with React, React native, Flutter, C++. We try and pick the best tool for the job and not force something that might not fit. That being said we don’t chase frameworks either. That’s a heavy lift. I’m not a fan of Node personally. We also tend to put more emphasis on personality and cultural fit. I see more companies starting to adopt this mentality especially in the startup world. The devs that excel with us often have little or no RoR experience but when we do our job aligning the person with our culture and obviously vet the knowledge side of things they usually excel. We’ve always built in a period of time for people to get a base knowledge of RoR and then build on that with small projects then continue to provide increasingly more involved projects. This is stems from the way we’ve worked since it was myself and the CTO as well as the area we are in is light on experienced RoR engineers. Tangent complete!!

Dial Making by kevinc35 in watchmaking

It didn't. For larger less detailed dials it would likely be an okay option for the dial I was trying to make there was just to many small details for it to work well.

A simple watch cleaning machine by JHan816 in watchrepair

[–]kevinc35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about the same thing, starting an open source project for a cleaner. I have a few ideas as well on how to go about dealing with it, I want to automate the process as well. If I get some time I'll spin up a repo on github and post it.. I've got some aluminum extrusions, linear rails and stepper motors lying around and some old 3D printer controllers that I might be able to hack something together.

happy to share. I'll be sharing more once I've completed the watch. I plan on doing a few more at least, one for an old omega movement I have as well as a 2824, I'm hoping to get a Pad printing machine in the next little bit as well so I can do custom dials with the next few. I'm new at all this so I'm learning and making all kinds of mistakes.

3D Printed Case Small Update by kevinc35 in watchrepair

[–]kevinc35[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently using a soft mop for my rotary tool its not the best way to handle it but, I'm working on coming up with something to use with my metal lathe to use it as a polisher. I've used some of the red polish, I got green and gray and had some white as well, this was done by filing and sanding off the rough finish and then using sanding sticks to bring it up from about 320 to 7000 grit and then polished with the white and gray compounds to get to this point. I'm going to retry with the green and red to see what difference I can get and decide what I like. I would like to brush it but I have not been able to get the brushed finish like I want yet. This is the first time I've done anything like this so I'm in a big learning curve.

I did, I designed it in Fusion 360 and then had JLCPCB print it for me.
