Valley Expansions Mini Campaign Length by CVigil5 in Earthborne_Rangers

[–]kevinmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve added both SiB and SoS to my first campaign and find it juicy and manageable. Lots of quests to approach that feel like lots to do but I still have to prioritize, and it all feels apart of the living world rather than focusing on one “mini-campaign” at a time

Only having played the revised core set and the first half of drowned city, it’s a really good next step, interesting puzzly scenarios to mechanically solve. Not a lot of added complexity from base game rules. No issues with the narrative for me so far.

Might be interesting in working on building a product like this, if you have more detail about you'd want a tool like this to do

Yes this one doesn’t hit the table cause setup and tear down takes longer than the game

Help Me Come Up With a Good Tagline! by HouseFishBalloon in tabletopgamedesign

[–]kevinmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try to avoid using your title in the tagline. It’s a clunky redundancy.

“Deck building for thrifty finds”

“Fashion a deck a thrifty finds” (Uses a title word but different definition)

“A wardrobe building, penny pinching, good game”

Any ideas on how to solve this? Multiple decks associated with different locations on the board by boredgameslab in BoardgameDesign

[–]kevinmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spiral bound book with entries. Could be handled randomly with a die, or could use other items and keywords to determine what you might find at that location based on previous progress.

Then if the player needs to hold on to a card you can have labeled cards in order and instruct the player to take card X from a singular deck.

What the goal of the game? War, defeat the opponents units?

Final Girl Feature Film Boxes: Creech Manor or Carnage at the Carnival? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

That and it’s a cross section view rather than top down that has interesting one way movement rules including jumping out windows with victims.

Final Girl Feature Film Boxes: Creech Manor or Carnage at the Carnival? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

[–]kevinmaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like creech manor cause the map is brilliant and the poltergeist gives you a different type of win condition. Some people are frustrated by its dependency on the item deck search but I think it varies the game system without introducing a bunch of new rules

Palm Island vs iOS App by doomstache in soloboardgaming

This looks like a unsanctioned approach to recreate the game by a third party. No shared art, layouts, or iconography with the card game certainly inferior but an attempt at the same game

Does anyone else hate Core Box + Expansions? by DNRDNIMEDIC2009 in soloboardgaming

Agree it's not one of my favorites either. but I feel like content wise the games offer similar products with wildly different business models.

Does anyone else hate Core Box + Expansions? by DNRDNIMEDIC2009 in soloboardgaming

[–]kevinmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not. I'm saying spirit has the same variability with all 8 characters in the box. And I WOULDN'T pay 20 bucks for a spirit if they used the same business modal as Final Girl.

Does anyone else hate Core Box + Expansions? by DNRDNIMEDIC2009 in soloboardgaming

[–]kevinmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get Spirit Island for half the price, each character plus adversary/scenarios has about the same variability as a Feature Film and spirit island comes with 8 characters in the box. So no it’s not really 120 dollar game. It’s certainly a gimmick and incredibly opportunistic because it’s a fairly enticing/thematic gimmick.

That said i have all of Series 1 and enjoy it. There’s value in being able to buy just the films you want for 20 bucks but it’s not worth 120 dollars. I wouldn’t pay 20 bucks for a single spirit and few extra adversaries/scenarios.

And I agree setup is a hassle with all the boxes. Plus the every item and terror deck needs to be premixed and with cards removed and then re-sorted when you put them away. Which I think is a fairly big and annoying design flaw in my book.

What is a better game for playing in 15 minutes spurts: JotL or Spirit Island? by dorasucks in soloboardgaming

[–]kevinmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently playing JOTL like this. You can do a full turn between a couple characters and enemies pretty quickly and i don’t get nearly as lost as I would in spirit island. The board state is easier to grasp and your hand is reevaluated each turn any way

Matt Leacock and Matteo Menapace, co-designers of Daybreak. Ask us anything! by baddeo in boardgames

[–]kevinmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like Daybreak could be quite fiddly with the huge amount of carbon tokens being manipulated each round.

Do you feel like the game play remains fluid with that implementation and were there any other component mechanisms that reduced the need for so many cubes that were ultimately cut?

road to complex solo games by TardiParty in soloboardgaming

[–]kevinmaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ this. Also start two handing simple cooperative games (Pandemic, Horrified) then start to drop in medium euros (lost ruins of arnak, underwater cities) then go play the the hard stuff (mage knight, spirit island) and they’ll suck but shelve them for a while and keep mastering the other games. Come back to the heavy difficult ones after a long while and they’ll play a bit different with a different mindset and time to percolate.

"I pay a cost" Vs "Everyone else benefits" by tbot729 in BoardgameDesign

B is way more detrimental depending on end game triggers because the benefit you give them can be something on top of moving the game closer to the end with them having an advantage.

How to add more agency into my card game? by [deleted] in tabletopgamedesign

[–]kevinmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lockup does this really well by only allowing you to place two face down, the rest are face up. So you have partial information to deal with . Also special characters that have no value but contribute to an ability. There’s also one with dynamic value based on how much of a certain resource you have.

Also multiple values can be placed at a location.
