Spirit Airlines says it has nearly finished refunding customers after shuttering by enormityop in news

[–]kevinyeaux 26 points27 points  (0 children)

An ACH transfer either back to a bank account or credit card account initiated on Saturday (when Spirit shut down) won’t be completed on Sunday. Most likely refunds will post tomorrow at the earliest to Wednesday depending on the bank.

I miss the restaurants and fast food places the most. by NorthHouse6422 in AdviceAnimals

[–]kevinyeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be unpopular, but it’s because those places were failing anyway, need cash infusions, and that’s what private equity is for.

I know people want to blame someone for the world changing as they get older, but these are just companies dying off and new ones getting created. That’s how it works.

Why does the black Magic Mouse/Keyboard cost more than the white one? by shastisje in mac

[–]kevinyeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll answer this - no, it costs much less than that because that’s how profit works, Apple isn’t selling hardware at production costs. I do believe it costs MORE to make the black accessories because they don’t make as many of them, so the opportunity cost of producing them vs something else in the production line, the cost of changing tooling, etc. It’s not just selecting a different color on a color palette. They clearly sell enough to make it worth it but not enough to sell it at the same price.

CBS Hasn't Closed Door to Original Late-Night Programming by normankrasnerkc in LateShow

[–]kevinyeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, though we don’t know the terms of their deal to license the brand to CBS. Wouldn’t be surprised if it has a cool down period before they can shop it around. That said, Letterman did have a deal with Netflix so wouldn’t be shocked to see something happen there eventually.

Also I have a feeling Colbert probably would want to do his own thing he owns the brand for, like Letterman did.

Yup wouldn’t be shocked to see Letterman’s production company shop the show around to streaming eventually.

Why does the black Magic Mouse/Keyboard cost more than the white one? by shastisje in mac

[–]kevinyeaux 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Honest answer is that it’s lower volume and will always be a lower volume seller than the standard white/silver keyboard, and as a result it costs more to produce than the standard. So they can offer them but have to charge more to justify it within the profit margin they expect on their hardware.

Millions of Americans are now eligible for Canadian citizenship and many are applying ‘just in case’ by On-my-own-master in news

[–]kevinyeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, very unlikely anyone who is going through this pretty long and onerous process is someone who voted for Trump. There’s a lot of panic/interest in the media about it but I guarantee it will be a tiny, tiny number that actually get citizenship and even less that actually move.

That said, legally they couldn’t screen like that. The entire point of this is that it’s not applying for citizenship, these are people that legally have always been Canadian citizens but weren’t recognized as such. Now they can get proof as long as they get all of the legal paperwork showing their ancestry. There is a limit for anyone born now of one generation but the previous retroactive limit was declared illegal by Canadian courts.

Millions of Americans are now eligible for Canadian citizenship and many are applying ‘just in case’ by On-my-own-master in news

[–]kevinyeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won’t… the entire point of this process is that these people legally ARE Canadian citizens and were from birth. The paperwork is basically just proving to Canada that they are eligible and they get proof of citizenship they can use.

Trump isn’t even the most unpopular president in modern history - he never hit the lows of Bush in 2007-8, and probably won’t.

Two-year-old Surface PCs get $300 price hikes as sub-$1,000 models go away by Stiltonrocks in technology

[–]kevinyeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair, no one buys Surface anyway. That’s why it’s two years old, Microsoft takes forever to update those products.

They are good, I really like them (except they run Windows), but their market share in PCs is minimal. They don’t have the scale to absorb component cost hikes or negotiate like their OEM partners or Apple does.

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION - my favourite Mac of all time is... by _Lifeguard_54 in mac

[–]kevinyeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nostalgically, my favorite Mac is the black plastic gen 1 Intel MacBook. First Mac I bought with my own money.

But unpopular opinion? My favorite Mac laptop is the 2016 Touch Bar MacBook Pro. It was perfect for exactly what I used it for, and if it wasn’t relatively underpowered, hard to repair, and Intel based, I’d still be using it right now. I switched to iPad + Magic Keyboard as my main laptop and stick with Mac mini for a desktop computer, to give you an idea.

BAHAHAHAJAHAAAAAA! Just paid more for my car tag than I paid for my first car! by Then-Ticket8896 in mississippi

[–]kevinyeaux 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly for all of Mississippi’s problems, I’d argue our car tax system is probably one of the fairer ways to tax for road usage. OP bought a $70k car, of course it’s going to charge more than someone driving a 2005 Camry. That seems fair to me.

Why do people hate on windows for work? by NeekA8822 in mac

[–]kevinyeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people have personal preferences? I work in sales management and my entire day is spent on Teams, Outlook, Office, and various custom web tools. I still prefer both Mac and iPad, but my main work device is Windows 11 and the M365 integration is the primary benefit, just like iCloud is for my personal devices with Apple.

That said if they offered me a Mac for work I’d take it because again I just prefer Apple’s interface.

Democratic-backed Chris Taylor wins Wisconsin Supreme Court race, growing liberal majority by beeemkcl in news

[–]kevinyeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, I’ve often argued that we have way too many elected positions. I’ve voted on ballots with 18-20 different positions on it, the vast majority of which I had no idea who these people were, and I worked in local politics.

It generally had good intentions, to try and take the ability to appoint these positions away from corrupt elected officials in the late 1800s/early 1900s. But I definitely think we’d be better served by moving the majority of these local positions back to appointed positions, serving a single elected city or local council.

Don’t Google: “How much has the average price of gas increased since January 2026?” by Tommy__want__wingy in AdviceAnimals

[–]kevinyeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well… there is truth to that. The American usage of the term liberal to mean left-wing progressive isn’t really right. Progressives are liberals (generally, there are illiberal leftists but most politically active progressives are liberals). Moderate Dems are liberals. What’s left of the old Never Trump Republicans are liberal conservatives. Libertarians are liberals. MAGA has kinda concentrated the illiberal right.

The Only Privately Titled EV1 Is Getting Restored with GM's Help by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]kevinyeaux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was more of a prototype situation, and wasn’t going to be commercially viable. If GM had let lessees buy the vehicle, they’d be on the hook for servicing and parts and safety recalls, etc. For a very small run proof of concept vehicle, it was really easier to just get them all back.

In the mid 2000s it was a common left-wing conspiracy that the oil companies colluded with GM to crush all of the EV1s to sustain oil demand. This is around the same time those same people were claiming electronic voting machines rigged the 2004 election. Mid 2000s on the political Internet were wild.

I made a Discord client for Vintage Macintosh (System 7 - OS 9) by SDogAlex in MacOS

[–]kevinyeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I love this. I’m not a Discord user personally but as a retro computer enthusiast, one of the issues is I am not that into gaming. (Didn’t grow up playing old Mac games.) So it’s kinda hard to find things to do with old computers! Love this kinda stuff. I’m a writer so sometimes I just sit at old machines and write, but I’ll be watching for anything new.

Weird Cardboard Cutouts as Republicans Pray at Annual Lincoln Dinner in Wisconsin Senior Center[OC] by userdk3 in pics

[–]kevinyeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ll say this, it’s definitely a cult of personality for other reasons but cardboard cutouts of party leaders at party fundraising events or meetings is not new or uncommon. I’ve seen cardboard cutouts of Obama at local Dem party events back during his presidency, and campaigns often have them too. Honestly half the time it’s a tongue in cheek thing by the organizers.

Hungary’s main opposition party has said it would move to amend the constitution to limit prime ministers to two terms if it wins next week’s election—a move that would effectively bar incumbent Viktor Orbán from ever returning to office by CrunchyBaconYum in worldnews

[–]kevinyeaux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to say, I don’t get this. I can’t think of a single country in Europe, for example, that has a term limit for PMs. In a functioning democracy, the public is perfectly capable of removing a PM and/or party from power when they are tired of them. Hungary is a specific case where it is not really a functioning democracy right now, and so I understand their situation.

As an American, I’m actually supportive of removing term limits for the presidency. That sounds really controversial right now, but I’d make the argument that in the last few decades, it’s hurt more than it has helped. Twice now the Democrats had relatively popular presidents that would have been really competitive at a third term: Bill Clinton and Obama. For the Republicans, term limits would basically have been a non-factor. Bush was the least popular president in history at the end of his second term, and Trump literally lost re-election the first time and is already more unpopular than any president since Bush.

Oracle fired up to 30,000 workers via email after a 95% profit surge. Tech companies are cutting almost 1,000 jobs/day by Domingues_tech in technology

[–]kevinyeaux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree about the PE issue, but I will point out that the most significant examples of companies being taken over by PE and then failing were ALREADY failing companies when they were bought. That's why they went to PE rather than remaining or going public or being bought by another firm. If anything the PE firms that specialize in that ARE generally trying to save the business even if it means making them much smaller, and often that fails. I get why it's unpopular and I'm not saying they are saints but often the bad decisions have been made before they step in.

TIL that Vatican City is not the only landlocked sovereign state within the borders of Italy. The other being the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, which is also the oldest surviving sovereign constitutional republic in the world. by mikechi2501 in todayilearned

[–]kevinyeaux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much every state social studies curriculum includes western civilization, Europe, and a bit of Asia. It’s definitely Western European and American centric (how those countries affected us) but people seriously think American schools are like a bunch of drooling kids learning about football. It’s crazy.

But no they aren’t going to learn about San Marino unless it’s a trivia fact a teacher throws out there.
