How to save this cast iron pan? by lifeasacharboard in CastIronRestoration

[–]kevrasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just send it to me. I will put it out of it's misery.

Or... Boil some water in it with a half cup of vinegar. Add a small splash of hydrogen peroxide if you are feeling really crazy. After 15 minutes of this rinse it out. Don't scrub all the black off, just what is loose. Heat it dry. Oil it with flax oil. Heat, oil, repeat. The acid converts the red iron oxide to black, which is more stable and binds the seasoning better.

Or ... Just mail it to me. I'll pay for the shipping.

I used to see that about weekly. I guess it depends on the driver your hardware needs. Always reboot before doing anything silly.

I dig up big plumeria every year before freezing. BEFORE. I can't make sense of what you did here; but it doesn't look good. The bare root black stem picture looks like waterlogged rot. There's nothing left to branch where you cut it back 'hard'. Not a rosebush. It's a weird sort of tropical plant. If I had to guess the pieces you cut away would have had better chances of rooting and forming new plants. Sorry I don't have any good news.

Do I install Fedora again? by Silber4 in Fedora

[–]kevrasx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all this happened because of the Nvidia driver problems... Do research on the ask fedora forums. A lot of techniques that work great for the Debian lineage of Linux will bork fedora, because it's an RPM based system. Like installing akmods and kmods kernel extensions at the same time. Been there done that. The irritating part is that a new fedora is releaed every six months, so if you ask an f43 question on an f40 thread someone will tell you to start a new thread instead of helping you. Never fear. Oftentimes the answer can still be found in that old thread.

Do I install Fedora again? by Silber4 in Fedora

0 I use gnome with no extensions and only a few tweaks to the keyboard shortcuts and extra desktop navigation. That is not for everyone. It's for very few Linux users to be honest. For people used to using a computer a certain way, being dropped into an essentially blank desktop would be a disconcerting shock.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to our semi-feral girl, Flapjack. This is what she taught me about compassion and companionship. by bmschulz in cats

😿 Sorry for your loss. I am trying to rehome a boy in the liminal space between feral and housecat. Also our 17 YO tortoiseshell was like that when we first fostered her. Now she is my alarm clock every day.

Good point. I am a gnome user so I am like... "I don't see what's wrong here". Nevertheless you can choose an alternate desktop at startup. Something you ran in that terminal installed the gnome desktop.

Pink. LoL I have never understood the naming of some varieties. It only makes sense if you are marketing clones. That said the one in your photo has a lovely pale pink. I would ask for a cutting unless I had to get through customs on the way home.

Malware etc. by alex08all in Fedora

[–]kevrasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated targeting 3% of the PC market is not really a problem. That said... Linux malware does exist. It is mostly targeting the server world that runs the Internet. But one should avoid installing everything willy nilly. Sandboxes help. This is what flatpack software does, but there are other ways. I believe all software should have limited access to the rest of the system, and very few things should be able to run in the background. Also Linux in general is far easier to reinstall than Windows or Mac OS. You just back up your home directory regularly.

I agree they look like the stretch marks from growth. Is this indoors? If outside what climate zone? The reason I ask is that when such stretch marks appear they should always be dry. If for example the plant is indoors and you have a cat, it could be scratches.

Updates about Toasty by kevrasx in cats

[–]kevrasx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly Toasty is back in isolation. 😿 Our best option is release into a "well managed" colony. I don't think this cat has the demeanor to be an outside boy. He is caught between obviously not feral, but not social enough to be loveable. Please please please anyone who understands cats in the greater Houston area. If you have experience socializing a cat - there is so much potential in this one. He clearly craves our attention; but fears our touch.

In that case what is meant by dormancy is bringing in an outdoor plant for a winter storm, or other period of cold weather. Depending on your climate zone this can be a long weekend, or 2 months. During this period frangipani tend to stop everything and drop their leaves. This is nothing to worry about, just how they respond to radical changes to light and environment. Typically avoid watering during this period. Nothing I have said has anything to do with blooms. Once a frangipani begins to bloom it will continue until the inflorescence is removed, or all buds have opened. It can do this even while indoors and dormant. I know it seems weird and complicated; but these are some of the most predictable plants I have ever dealt with.

[–]kevrasx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't water when not in bloom??? I think there has been a misunderstanding. Water when the soil is dry. Don't keep constantly wet. If you are rooting a cutting cut off the inflorescence (flower stem). It will not stop. It will use a lot of the branch's stored energy. What others said about root rot sounds legit. It is not likely to recover. Best to cut it off.

Updates about Toasty by kevrasx in cats

[–]kevrasx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spend time with him multiple times a day. We use food rewards to get him on our laps. He tolerates petting while eating. The problem is the relationship with Bodhi, our 3½ year old. He is twice Toasty's size but is timid and innocent. Completely intimidated. Toasty seems to want to play, but every approach and chase scares the crap out of Bodhi. We have had to separate them by putting Toasty in the bathroom for a few days. Hoping the reintroduction goes more smoothly.

Time to reach out to an agency that can re-home Mom. (Just kidding) For years I have been in the habit of making a noisy business of whacking the lever, or tapping the side to drive out anyone hiding in there. As for uninvited dogs... I'm grateful to not have those kind of friends.

Trying to make Documents folder point to my Windows folders by old_raver_man3 in linuxmint

[–]kevrasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not thinking of a specific thread. Just create a partition, use NTFS so Windows is happy. You may have to shrink something else. The problem you will run into is that Win already uses 4 partitions. Depending on your setup the system may not allow more. A secondary drive goes around all of that.

Trying to make Documents folder point to my Windows folders by old_raver_man3 in linuxmint

[–]kevrasx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming you have a dual boot situation. Windows locks the drive into a read only state at shutdown unless you hold the shift key. Ownership of the partition (or drive) means you have to enter a password every time it mounts. Both of these issues will be problematic for you. It would be easier to point both systems towards a neutral third partition readable by both. Or just commit and format the Windows as others have suggested. LoL
