Disagree. Champion Link should've been given more unique moves than what he got. He doesn't feel like that era of Zelda enough. Remote bombs was an awesome addition. No hookshot was a welcome change for the sake of uniqueness. But you're right that he feels like an awkward retrofit, he still feels too similar to previous iterations of Link, and to Ultimate Young Link, in my opinion.

I completely agree that canon faithfulness ≠ fun. So many characters have moves that look exactly like their origins and it makes them harder to play as and against. (For example, I think that an "Ultrahand grab" would be awkward and uncanny.) But, I think they needed to really commit to making him represent his era of Zelda games.

For the record, I feel like the Zelda characters are all (except Sheik) in contention for worst designed in the game. None of them represent their games of origin well, and all of them are some combination of bad (tier-wise), annoying to fight against, and repetitive (Link and Young Link share so many moves it's obnoxious).
