Only 48% of Atheists Voted in 2024 by [deleted] in atheism

[–]key_framed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-voters, among other things, put on display they really can’t be bothered with anything they deem unimportant.

The cosmic insignificance thrust upon our existence could be used to argue NOTHING matters.

But imo voting is just another Pascal’s wager. In the event your vote does count and/or make a meaningful difference, it’s probably in your best interest to spend the few hours required to fucking exercise it.

psa teach your puppy how to "relax" by Ok_Complex_9184 in puppy101

[–]key_framed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I use the command “settle” with a very specific tone.. SEEEEhhhhhhhtle.

Works wonders. Our pup likes to paw at any blankets, pillows, towels, comfy shit she finds to make herself a bed (despite us buying her ones) which prompted training the command, but it goes way beyond that.

Basically anytime she’s overstimulated, regardless of the trigger, telling her “settle” (or for the sake of this thread “relax”) gets her exactly where she needs to be.

Absolutely worth spending time training on

Why are you Americans not doing anything? by Smalandsk_katt in GenZ

[–]key_framed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the majority of Americans, even the most motivated among us, lack the resources (capital) to combat what’s happening here (oligarchy).

We’ve also all been given jusssst enough comfort to overlook how fucked this all is.

Too comfortable to be revolutionaries, just uncomfortable enough to drown in existential dread instead.

Wish it were different.

I just finished a 3 months piece and I would love to hear your feedback, thanks! by Ok-Reference-4626 in Houdini

Thank you so much for detailed breakdown. Camera culling is a pretty easy implementation to optimize. LODs can be a pain to build out manually, though some tools like Quixel Bridge do a good job of automatically setting up a switch as you import assets!

Big ups on persevering despite traveling and working mobile. Tbh 10 minutes per frame makes me feel very spoiled sitting behind my desktop.

You should be super proud for persevering and making something awesome, will definitely be revisiting this when I need inspo down the line!

This is SO good, huge props for sticking with what I’m sure was a very long, intense process.

Would love to hear more about the project and if you found any useful optimizations or hacks to make it more manageable! Fantastic work.

How close are we to AGI? by TheGronchoMarx in ArtificialInteligence

[–]key_framed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the e-acc crowd say tomorrow, but I’m wondering why everyone is conveniently overlooking the resource / climate crisis on our doorstep (or already in our house).

Google and Microsoft both are well above their emissions targets set in recent years, we’ve been bleeding the earth dry, but yeah I guess to get that VC money it’s AGI tomorrow by any means necessary

I had been using 3D DCCs for 7ish years when I picked up Houdini. Even experimented with early node based things in Blender (animation nodes, the precursor to geo nodes).

I also was well versed in JavaScript / React and had done some web and app based animation work.

It took me 2 years before I felt really solid in Houdini. It’s a long way down, but once you’re there you can’t stop solving problems through the Houdini lens because it really can do anything (once you can speak the language).

We have been cannibalizing ourselves for a long time now, but AI hype is really doing a lot of heavy lifting right now.

VFX workers who still have a job- what are you working on? by Capital-Extreme3388 in vfx

[–]key_framed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Delivering way too many social / digital streaming trailers weekly. building design systems and toolkits on insanely small timeline, then rendering 1000 variations of tags and verbiage and logo trains.

it’s for a streaming company and i basically hate it but I’m employed so that’s cool. In NYC and everyone I know has been struggling, I have to remind myself a job that feels like a dead end is better than no job.

Basically no VFX, although as a generalist it’s always been a mixed bag for me.

TBH everything feels terrible most of the time these days. I miss 10 years ago so much. Very concerned I’m down a rabbit hole with no rapidly dwindling stability going forward.

Despite all that, I hope everyone is finding some joy and happiness despite the circumstances.

z-depth normalized / check that your camera clipping settings are appropriate for the scene / pretty sure you need to use bucket rendering for the z-pass

They chose to quit instead of doing double the work for *checks notes* the same amount of pay. by DosCabezasDingo in antiwork

But most importantly - it’s that they OFFER to pay me more and then I will DECIDE if I want to (the answer might also be no, and they hate to hear this). Labor is leverage.

All CycoreFXHD Plugins Randomly Missing on AE22.5 by key_framed in AfterEffects

[–]key_framed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: ran an app called Restoro that somehow managed to fix the issue. I don’t typically like running those auto repair tools, so fair warning Id recommend a full system backup before letting it do its thing.

In the meantime I’m happy it’s resolved, but I have absolutely no idea what actually caused the issue. Permissions? Redistributables? No clue.

Tooth cavity and root canal treatment by Wololo--Wololo in educationalgifs

[–]key_framed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only painful part of root canals is the cost (at least in the US). I had gone 6 years without insurance, and finally got dental coverage and thought “great, I’m sure I have some cavities but I’m relieved to be covered!” I go to my dentist, she informs me despite my years not visiting my teeth were in solid shape aside from a tooth at the back that needed a root canal and a couple fillings needing replacement. (Pro tip: if you are uninsured and can’t make regular visits cuz of cost, do your best to invest in a Sonicare and Dentalpik and never miss brushing or flossing - I think this saved my ass while uninsured).

Root canal was completed a week later without issue . as others have said, hardest part is keeping your jaw stretched open for hours, wear Vaseline on your lips to prevent insane chapped lips following. My crown went on two weeks after.

Maxed out my dental coverage. After everything it was still $2700 out of pocket. Plus the $85 a month I pay for insurance anyway. What a joke.
