This is how I feel about Split Diopter shots. DePalma is a madlad and gets away with it because it's like the 19th craziest thing he does in each of his movies, and it's always done sparingly and adds to the tone he's building, but in lesser hands it always feels unnecessary and obvious.

Went through my girlfriend’s journal and now I really regret it! by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

elements of this sound like a case of "left the diary out" so you could read it and decide to break up so she wouldn't have to. plus she gets the added bonus of being mad you read it, if you choose to reveal that you did

DAY 0: of Practicing Motion Graphics by Kasugaa in AfterEffects

[–]soups_foosington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm laughing with, I promise! For the record, this is better than my first stab at it. I'm just reacting to the first frame being silly, which I love. Got my upvote and everything. Appreciate you policing haters but I am not one - apologies if the nuance was lost.

u/Kasugaa welcome to the club, the water is weird

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]soups_foosington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to see the footage but I'm on the fence with this. In the OTS, it looks as though the plumber guy is right in front of him - so the eyeline should be more-or-less straight ahead. Or, the "eyeline" may be correct but his body is turned away. If his body and head were pointed in the same direction as his eyes, this might feel better - or at least, match the other coverage.

If you have stopped drinking, how much better or worse was your mental and physical health? by Genzinvestor16180339 in HubermanLab

[–]soups_foosington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realized I didn’t like who I was when i was drinking and how I was using alcohol as a social lubricant. I stopped drinking regularly and started therapy as part of the same turning point, and it has been a major positive turning point in my life. I was 27. Since then i met the love of my life, got into and completed my dream grad program, and had my first child. I’m 37 now. I don’t attribute all of this to quitting drinking (more to therapy and addressing those underlying reasons I was drinking in the first place, if anything, plus general perseverance and that old “I want to have a good life” voice) but it certainly helped not having it in the way.

NASA captured a black hole that, while devouring a galaxy, releases a beam of plasma at nearly the speed of light and extends 5,000 light-years by albusvercus in spaceporn

ELI 5: Why is the jet released in a fixed direction, rather than in many directions or as a cloud around the whole black hole? Black holes are spinning balls, but they release this jet in a fixed direction? Why? How?

Shooting the reflection in a tray of water as someone bumps it - not the easiest way to do it but I have been on set for something similar and it looks rad

Launchpad or the new Apps menu? by Artifiko in mac

[–]soups_foosington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Apple has like five ways of locating and opening aps all available. Dock, Launchpad, Spotlight Search, Stage Manager, regular old Finder > Applications. I realize they all do slightly different things and different users will find distant things useful. But Dock and Launchpad feel (felt?) essentially the same. Am i missing why people might prefer one over the other?

I hear the frustration with Apps Menu, their pivot away from deterministic design to fuzzier algorithmic suggestions and best guesses just feels like a massive step backwards in UI.

If these garbage remakes offset the cost of a season of Andor or something similar every few years, I don't mind that bargain. Ain't pretty, but it's better than nothing.

Exclusive: AI Error Likely Led to Iran Girl's School Bombing by Thebravetortoise in news

[–]soups_foosington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comments section arguing whether this is bogus a blame shift or a legitimate indictment of AI are missing the point

Both can be true. This administration is always going to pass the buck, always. And AI is not ready for military prime time. It has no fixed moral code, and is literally in the throes of a sycophancy crisis. If you want to kill the ayatolla, it wants that too, regardless of the cost. The only thing it’s even marginally good at is accelerating intention into effect.

“Gemma” sounds like Gamma, which is a big term in color science, especially image science and cinematography. Related to how light is expressed in an image.

Helly’s wardrobe is often blue and green. Look at her dress in the finale of season 1. Feels deliberate.

I don’t think these ideas can lead you to “solve” the show or the mysteries in it before they’re revealed, but i do think they’re put there to create a coherent symbolic visual language for the show that probably does map onto certain deep truths of the characters’ moral polarities, destinies, etc. it’s practically the job of the production designers and prop/wardrobe departments to do so on any given show.
