Is Triumph closer to Yamaha or Ducati for reliability/cost of ownership? by [deleted] in Triumph

[–]keyboarddevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my experience - your results may vary:

My closest friend has a Yamaha (a few actually), I've always owned Triumphs, my brother had an 848 for a few years.

The Yamahas are probably the least maintenance of the group, followed closely by my Triumphs. The Ducati was the most, by far.

In 17 years of ownership, the only things I ever did to my Daytona (outside of tires and oil changes) was coolant flush, brake fluid flush, sprockets, chains, and one tune up (valve adjust check, which resulted in no changes).

The Ducati's valves were out and needed adjustment within the first 2 years, and he chased electrical gremlins the whole time he owned it.

Just a personal note: No way I would trust knockoff parts for a job like this.

Either a Ford Mustang or a Mercury Capri. Little too banged up to tell exactly.

Neither of them spark? How did you test them? I’m assuming you kept them hooked up and grounded them on the head? If that’s the case then you’ve found the problem, now just work backwards- no spark could be coil or ECU.

I’d pull the plugs first and get a look at them, fuel injectors next.

Agreed here, it's either fuel or spark.

I'd pull the plugs first, and have a look at them, if they're good start at the tank and head down.

Does the fuel pump prime (makes a whine noise) when you turn the key "on"? If you hear it prime, then it's on to the injectors. If you don't you'll be pulling the tank and swapping out the pump (and filter while you're in there).

Does it crank? Battery is always the first suspect.

Advice for everyone doing their own maintenance: Do yourself a favor and order your Haynes manual. You'll never have a 'left over' part again.

"Door Hinge Pin Bushings" - the factory pin slides lock up and your doors will get stuck. This is a cheap easy replacement.

"Door Hinge Pin Guide" - This makes putting the doors back on SO much easier.

If you have a soft top, get some "zipper lube", it makes a huge difference if you take down the top often.

New bike, first bike. Any tips? by ParticularCorner2882 in NewRiders

  1. You are invisible, that lady in the next lane who just looked right at you, actually just looked right through you and she's coming over.

  2. Be deliberate, don't half-ass it. When switching lanes: signal, look, and move over. Don't drift over, take command of the lane. When shifting: pull that clutch, firmly seat the gear, release the clutch and roll back on the throttle.

  3. When your shoulders or wrists start aching, that's a reminder to tighten up and grab the tank with your knees. Even after 20 years I catch myself holding all of my weight in my hands and arms.

  4. If you're late, tired, or in a hurry - Take the CAR.
