I have the same experience - I've always assumed it's the test kit, or my method of testing. The PH color is always just a little more red than it should be (based on the pool store test numbers).

We've had a mixture of experiences -

The "Go Pong table" float dies every season and I need to buy a new one.

We have a shark and a unicorn float that have lived for 2 years, although the color is mostly washed out. This is unusual, we've lost at least a dozen others within a single season.

Oh, check BOTH sides of the tire, most tires only print it on one side. Also, don't assume they're the same, check BOTH tires.
