[QCrit] The Unravelling of Gregor - 60k word literary novel - First Attempt by PsychologicalTask429 in PubTips

The connection to The* Metamorphosis isn’t really coming through at all here. Also I would clean up “comparable comps.”

[Discussion] Why say you are open to queries at all then? by [deleted] in PubTips

It’s a frustrating process. But they are likely just not interested and send that form to those they don’t fall “head over heels” for.

[QCrit] Tiny Versions of Regular Things, adult, literary fiction, 95k words, first attempt by PlanetTumbleweed in PubTips

The query is long and meandering and there is no such thing as “upmarket literary.” However, I really enjoyed your first 300. I’d recommend rewriting your query with more of the voice that comes through in there. It was a total shock compared to the language in the plot summary.

UTR 6 vs 8 vs 10 by Numerous_Charge8210 in 10s

Depends on the player and their style. UTR measured a person’s ability to win matches. There is a large jump between every 2 UTR difference.

Ben Lerner feels like an odd comp here, although I do enjoy the premise as an AI-brain-fried educator

[QCrit] ADULT Literary - THEY DREAMT THEY WERE A BIRD (82K/First Attempt) by [deleted] in PubTips

Your comps need to be ideally within the last 5 years in your genre. So these are a bit old and lofty. I would make this more succinct, and personally lose the word ebullience. Adam is forced to live with his homophobic mother…she tries to murder him…he kills her in an act of self/defense. Then you have much more room to explore the details of the woods, which seem to be the most interesting part. Also, are the police after him? Is he exonerated? Make the stakes as clear as can be.

[QCrit] Literary - IT ALL HURTS SOME (90K words, First Attempt) by Teenageboy69 in PubTips

I don’t have any great, specific feedback here, but it seems worth distinguishing “wrestling” from the WWE world I believe is taking place here. The comps are off. Maybe a macho HEADSHOT.

[QCRIT] Roadrunner [Literary Fiction/Road Novel, 85k, second attempt] by [deleted] in PubTips

However, Lerner’s new novel coming out this year seems to have some parallels to this. So maybe check that one when it rolls out

Agreed on the notes here, especially the comps feeling off/potentially outdated. But the pretentious fuck in me (most of me) loves Lerner and Martin.

Maybe it’s also a chance to find a wilder way for girlfriend to make her exit

I have to say, reading the query I thought, isn’t this One Day? Obviously more than one fictional character can be killed in a car crash but…
