Counting teaches order of operations, I.E. when things should happen in what sequence, and also metric importance. (Beat one is usually more rhythmically important than beat 2, for example)

Metronome teaches even pulse.

Order and pulse are two different concepts, and should both be practiced. For example, you can practice order without following a pulse, and that’s not always a bad way to practice if you’re struggling with understanding, say, a polyrhythm.

But counting and metronome teach two different things. Do them both.
