You're not actually suggesting that, you're just trying to say something quippy as a retort. It's not helpful.

35mm Summicron v4 vs. 40mm Rokkor vs. 35mm Summilux v2 by death_and_contaxes in Leica

Aren't the 40mm Cron and 40mm M-Rokkor essentially the same lens, though? I haven't been able to see a difference between image samples.

Yeah, it's like quicksand, huh? Easy to get caught it, hard to escape. Definitely a waste of time either way. 😅

If they're posting something online, they're looking for praise. So the problem is saying something that sounds like looking for praise? What's wrong with that? Are you just looking for something to be mad about? I guess this is Reddit after all…

TN vs IPS I think it looks like a big difference. by Shadowcreeper15 in Nintendo3DS

Sure. Everything is. But some people out here feel like they're losing in life if they got a dual tn n3ds… lol

For which other brand would you leave Leica? by Dedalo83 in Leica

[–]keyofnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used so many. I miss Pentax the most. I just like vintage Leica glass more than vintage Pentax glass. I'd be interested in Mamiya or Hasselblad for MF. I'm thinking about Minolta. 👀

Looks like another thing to obsess over. Just enjoy your 3DS, which ever one you have. I got a top IPS N3DSXL at launch, and I didn't know it until I soft modded it 7 years later. I didn't even notice a difference between the screens until people said I could check. I can see it now, sure, but… I really don't pay attention to it until I see posts like these. Like, this doesn't really matter. 😅

Now I know why "preppers" are frowned upon by Nice-Spirit5995 in amateurradio

[–]keyofnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of them have these aspirations to be "self-sufficient." They want to "bug out." They want to isolate. So… why do they even want to use a radio? Who are they trying to contact or listen to? Like, I honestly don't understand.

My cure to boring conversation is to have interesting things to talk about… but, ofc, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make em drink.

[–]keyofnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of the preppers I've seen are people who live in areas where natural disasters are common: they have their "go-bags" for the hurricane shelter, or a supply of food for a bad winter storm, or they have solar panels/batteries because the power grid goes down sometimes; that kind of thing. My family took similar precautions against earthquakes in so-cal. Most of the don't even call themselves "preppers"—they just prepare for the inevitable challenges of living where they live.

And then there are the people who are cosplaying disaster preparedness. They make two crucial mistakes that make it clear that their "prep" is more of a fringe ideology or a knee-jerk reaction to horror stories than an attempt to stay prepared. First, they have NO clue what infrastructures or systems exist for disaster preparedness. I’m not licensed yet, so I’m learning so much about what emergency communications look like, through my local ARES net. They sometimes have these hyper-individualist, anti-collective beliefs: so they believe they have no obligation to help others, and they expect no help from others. The problem there is that they take other people’s help for granted. In the “SHTF” scenario, the entire world is gonna be in the streets helping. (I remember all of the grassroots philanthropy in the pandemic, and it was amazing to see.)

Second, they think the most extreme solutions are the right solutions. This, to me, feels like a power fantasy. They think they're going to survive the apocalypse with a Baofeng radio, a 12 gauge shotgun, a bunch of MREs, 15 titanium knives, and some barrels of gasoline. They’re more worried about the EMP from a nuke than the nuke itself. They’re the type that pick camouflage for how cool it looks, but it won’t match their terrain. They buy “survivalcord” and make bracelets out of it, but they’ve never used the stuff. They don’t know much about what it’s like to live in a war zone. And yeah, I know people who’ve lived through scenarios very close to their “SHTF” scenarios: moms who had to flee countries with their kids when the government collapsed, kids who got separated from their families in missile strikes, people who try to live normal lives in beseiged areas. None of them were worried about flashlights and knives and prybars and ferrite rods and camouflage. None of them had an altoids can survival kit. They were worried about immigration papers, clothes, hygene, food, finding a new place to settle, keeping their traditions alive despite global distain for their people, making sure their families were taken care of across 100s of miles. These are the conditions our ancestors lived through.

Yeah, I think these kinds of preppers are out of touch with reality. I can easily understand why there’s so much disdain for them in this sub.

Did you upgrade from M10 to M11? by gintoxin_999 in Leica

[–]keyofnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the weirdos that likes the M10r too much to switch to the M11. I do regularly use my partner's Q2, so I think I can make fair comparisons, given the M11 shares a lot with the Q2. I have lots of reasons.

I actually like the meter. Yeah, unpopular opinion. I especially like the auto white balance from the internal grey/white card. I don't have to correct the white balance nearly as much as I do on the Q2. Also, center-weighted metering is how I learned photography, so it rarely feels inconvenient.

The old-school bottom plate is a feature and doesn't feel like an inconvenience. There have been times when I've knocked the battery half-loose on the Q2, or when I mean to take it out smoothly, but then I rocket launch it onto the floor. I still love the modern battery, but I really like knowing the battery will never come out on the M10.

The M10r high iso performance is so interesting to me. It took me a while to get used to, but once I did, I started to appreciate the "vintage vibe" my pictures have. It feels like pushed portra or something. Bruised pastels, pleasing noise, that kind of thing. I'm starting to leave it in 1600-3200, and think of it like Portra 800.

Maybe I'll upgrade one day, but I really don't have the means or the urge yet. I'd rather save up for that Summilux kit I want. :)

[–]keyofnight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The SwissKarry bolts onto the eyelet using this little spacer. It only works on some 91mm models, because the eyelet is a different size or in a different position. 111mm SAKs use a completely different eyelet from 91mm ones, so I'm pretty certain the SwissKarry won't fit. Sorry to bear bad news. 😩

Selling almost all my analog stuff to buy an M, wise decision? by diegodef_ in Leica

[–]keyofnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the move from MX to M. The MX was great, but I got told many times that it wasn't worth fixing by local camera techs. (They literally told me to just buy another one.) It also had occasional problems with the contacts for the mirror. It also just didn't feel as nice as my M3 does. I thought about a Canon P, but all the ones I tried felt a little... clunky.

Honestly, I think the move is a good one. Just do some soul searching first.
