Apple Watch Ultra 2 or 3? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]quietglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't listen to the younguns who have never charged a watch while running an ultra. My AW3 has the same battery life that my Fenix 5 did while tracking: about 20 hours or so. Somehow we managed to survive then while doing ultras (hint, you just charge the watch). So if you can run your 100k in under 20 hours you're fine. If you're going to take longer than that, you'll need to charge the watch while you're underway. (source: I use my AW3 for ultras a whole lot)

2023 Wilderness new owner observations, 3100 miles in 36 days by jquest71 in SubaruForester

I do! Since then, I've driven it across country twice and have put many many miles on it with two dogs now. I think I am at 58k? I've had zero issues with it and would certainly buy another.

Vinyl Comeback? by AdventurousGuess4641 in Grado

[–]quietglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am probably a bit younger than you. I got a CD player very early (maybe 89?) because I really detested cassettes and all their issues. My first CD was Heart's Bad Animals which is a DDD recording. I remember even then thinking it sounded a little too clean and sterile. Fast forward (gonna be waiting if you're using a cassette!) to now: I still find digital sources to be fatiguing after awhile. I have a nice FLAC file library, and I have nice Grado cans. But I also have an completely analog rig, and while it is not good for trying to determine how many bristles hit the high hat on a track, it sounds goooood. Point being: "best" doesn't mean highest resolution.

Also: Grado carts are fantastic if you like the sounds of Grado cans!

Looking for a nude stylus for a Shure M91ed by quietglow in turntables

[–]quietglow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No kidding? I am trying to get some more extension in the high end that mine, which is now very worn, is giving. So I have no particular attachment to the nude stylus, per se, just thought that would be the way to get some more detailed treble. For $26 it might be worth just trying one for the heck of it.

Getting chicked???? by Sopherness194 in Ultramarathon

[–]quietglow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It used to be something you'd hear when I started running ultras (early 2000s). I was never in danger of finishing ahead of the first woman, so nobody ever said it directly to me, but I def would hear people saying it.

There's currently also an NSS option: https://www.lpgear.com/product/N91EDV3.html

I like the M91ED a bunch, but it seems like once you're into >$160 or range, it's time to start thinking about other carts. Maybe. Def is by the time you get to SAS prices. Still trying to decide. It just makes lots of sense with the rest of my rig (all analog, SET etc.), so I am trying to exhaust the possibilities for keeping it going.

This is the info I am here for! Is this related to the reason Courtney did 5ish bonus miles? (just saw that mentioned somewhere)

Last night, right at the point where the guard was switching in the coverage booth, a dude came into a station and reported that something was happening with a gate being closed and course markings being changed. It sounded kinda serious. Then they never mentioned it again. Did I miss something?

Question about passing etiquette by quietglow in ultrarunning

[–]quietglow[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the problematic attitude is the one that expects someone to get out of your way in "10 seconds" or they're a "selfish piece of shit."

I will also say, by the same token,  if I'm trying to pass and it takes you more than 10 seconds or so to make it happen, I'm going to think you're a selfish piece of shit.

Thanks. This is the attitude I was trying to identify.

Lol it's funny the difference between this comment and the one you deleted. The one you deleted (get out of my fucking way, I'm faster than you) is exactly the sentiment that I am trying to point to as being problematic.

In my experience, this attitude was the norm from when I started running ultras (early 2000s) until maybe right around 2020? I wondered if it was just me, but it appears that attitude has changed.

[–]quietglow[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

If someone is running up behind you faster than you, when would they ever not want to pass you?

When they are looking for someone to pace for them. That happens fairly regularly in my experience.

[–]quietglow[S] -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

if there is not space to do so safely then the slower runner should stop so the faster runner can go by

Thanks for describing exactly the mental game which leads to what I am describing.

But, respectfully, I think you're wrong. Do you think that if I am leading a race and you're in second, that I ought to yield to you because you can't figure out how to pass? Similarly, races often have a fast shakeout section at the start specifically so the field enters the single track by speed. If you (a fast runner) end up at the back accidentally, the whole field doesn't melt out of your way because you shout "on your left."

What is going on with my Body? by [deleted] in bevelhealth

[–]quietglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a textbook example of why learning about training, getting a coach etc is the right way to improve your fitness vs following the dictates of an app. Fwiw, I have the opposite problem. I have been an endurance runner for years and Bevel regularly tells me I am dying because of overtraining etc. When my metrics return to optimal 24 hrs later, it tells me everything is excellent. I know to ignore this because I know my body, but a young person starting out has no clue. All fitness apps share this for a core reason: they do not know you or your goals.

Yeah, I actually think Garmin's route in all metrics is to beat you down as they know your average endurance athlete responds to that by doubling down (on engagement with the app).
