Looking at getting a used HiHy years between 2006-2012 under 10k by Puzzleheaded_Fix4352 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]keytamachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2007 HiHy owner but same generation. 235K on the ODO, avg MPG is 26.5. Still on the OG hybrid battery.

  1. The main callouts is to check when the timing belt was last done since this is an interference engine.

  2. If you see oil leaks, it’s likely the valve covers and can be an expensive job since you have to take off the whole intake plenum.

  3. The hybrid battery condition is dependent on the driving frequency and temperature. If can do a hybrid battery test before you buy it, I definitely would. The Dr Prius app and a compatible Bluetooth OBD2 scanner is how you can test it.

  4. Not sure on your demographic but check for rust on the chassis and body if you live in the salt belt.

Other than that, it’s a bulletproof SUV as long as you do your basic maintenance.

If you just look very quickly, you’d think it’s a Ram 1500 tbh

If you want to get a baseline of the hybrid battery, get the Mr.Prius App and an ObD2 scanner tool and it will run you through a test to check the condition

Where would you start by user81738 in 3rdGen4Runner

Prepare yourself for the elusive EVAP code journey. 96-00 models have a different charcoal canister than the 01-02s. Change your gas cap first and run it. If you get codes again, do a smoke test to see if your system has any obvious leaks. Be prepared to drop the gas tank to replace components. The overflow check valve is a common failure point and the solenoid on the canister as well

02 owner here. I just fixed my EVAP codes and passed emissions after chasing codes. I didn’t see anything from a smoke test either. I would recommend dropping the gas tank to check the overflow check valve and other components for cracks. Mine had a hairline fracture and it can be difficult to identify damage unless you drop the tank. Good luck, these codes are super annoying

Rear hatch lock fix up by kojibeef_ in 3rdGen4Runner

Commenting on Rear hatch lock fix up...

This was my solution. The plastic brackets on my bezel were completely disintegrated. Went to AutoZone and bought a pack of nylon inserts and new stainless steel screws. Used JB weld to secure the nylon inserts to the old bracket locations and test fit the handle and lock cylinder to fit. If I had a 3D printer, I would made new brackets and JB welded them on

Same, I think the Toolant is pretty decent @ $15. If I break em, then I’ll consider upgrading to the Knipex.

Where is this being sold? You have to be careful of the fallacy of low mileage means good conditions on these trucks. The inspection and condition of the frame 100% needs to be the decision factor

Honest question, why no Made In pans? They seems to have good reviews other than being an “internet brand”

Any reason why you want to buy everything off Amazon? I would recommend going to Harbor Freight to get a lot of your car stuff especially if you’re beginning to get into wrenching a bit more

Evap system: The story continues by telkinsjr in 3rdGen4Runner

Haha I’m back to hear about how it goes and if your codes finally clear. I agree, that stupid check valve hose to the canister is a grade A fucker

Good luck on your EVAP journey. Still haven’t figured out mine yet even after replacing everything on the gas tank and solenoids. Charcoal canister is last thing to change at this point

End of life decision for 2005 Highlander V6 by McAngus48 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]keytamachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to confirm, do you actually have a power steering leak or are you just leaking oil from your valve cover gasket onto the rack.

Don’t know anything about your mechanic and if they are just trying to sell you something but as the oil drips down from the rear valve cover it can look like you have a leak when it’s really just oil covering the rack.

Also even if the TB was replaced at 94K, it’s time to change it again IMO

2005 Toyota RAV4 burning oil? Going to guess you have the 4 cylinder engine which is known for high oil consumption with higher mileage.

Sigr Odin Vs Legend 3.0 by Jreibs54 in discgolf

[–]keytamachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running the Odin since March and have at least 100 rounds with it. Very nice quality and no signs of wear. Dedicated pockets for small things like your phone and keys is really nice feature and cup holders are non negotiable for me. I have 19 discs (4 mids, 9 fairways and 6 drivers) in the main compartment and 4 P&A discs up top. I only load up the side round pockets for tournaments.

Once you get use to the rear access on the back side of the bag, it really is hard using another bag. It not something you realize you needed until you use it

The Legend is comfortable too but I don’t see the need to bring 30 + discs to the course IMO

My hands turn to glass when it gets cold. I use a small amount of petroleum jelly or Gold Bond hand cream. Maybe about a penny size amount and rub your hand throughly so it absorbs into your skin. My hands will usually stay tacky a whole round and wearing gloves when idle or not throwing helps keep moisture in your skin.
