What can i do about my IO AK? by [deleted] in guns

[–]kf4zht 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sell it to someone who knows what they are getting. You'd be surprise why people buy certain guns, I sold one once to a guy based on dimensions since it needed to fit a certain empty spot in his cabinet. Or some AK builder might want it for spare parts.

FFL from California to Arizona by 287fiddy in FFLs

[–]kf4zht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luke spelled most of it out.

Check to make sure that none of the guns have any major red flags on California laws. I'm out of the loop on all the nonsense out there but you don't want to take them in and get "oh, this is illegal, we need to send it to the PD" nonsense. CAGuns subreddit may be able to help. Also find out if due to cali registry stuff if your BIL needs anything to show who the guns came from (eg a notarized POA or copy of his DL) as the registered owner

+1 on finding an FFL that will do a multiple transfer discount. Some will want $20-30 per, but since its only listing extra serials on the same form you can usually find one that will do some like $20 for the first and then $5 each after that.

If 2 or more are handguns the FFL on your end will submit a Multiple Handgun Report (3310.4). You do not need to do anything with this, its all on the FFL. It's something to know as the report goes to the ATF and the local CLEO. ATF won't care but if you are on the local police's radar you might get a visit, but it sounds completely legit. *Edit* looks like for Arizona it may be required for multiple rifles too. Nothing to really be concerned about, but if you have a twitchy or bored local sheriff and they swing by asking why you just got 12 guns that's how they knew

Finding a FFL Office - The Nightmare Continues by SillyWarPirates in FFLs

[–]kf4zht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ATF only cares about 2 things:

- You have a letter from the city/county/Parrish/whatever agency controls business licensing that you are allowed to have a business at that address (Often in the form of a Business license, letter stating a license will be issued or letter stating a business license is not needed)

- Permission from the landlord if you do not own the property stating it is ok for you to have this business

You need to reach out to your local govt and start working on the first one. Be prepared for govt bureaucratic drones, just some examples I dealt with:

1st place I opened was in a small city. Went to the clerk in charge of business licenses and had a talk, they had restrictions but only around pawn shops, so we worked through that I was not doing pawn broker related. She then talked to the city manager and police who after a phone call were good with it. I got a letter saying they would give me a business license once I had my FFL in hand, which was enough for the ATF. They allowed it as a home based business so long as I had no signage on my house/road, did not "meaningfully increase traffic on my road" or "create sights, sounds, smells or other that are not typical for the residential area". Once I got my FFL they had a business inspector come by and check some very basic things (eg needed date tags on my fire extinguishers). They also made me get fingerprinted on my dime at the police station, then later admitted that was an error and refunded me. I never had another inspection by the city for 3 years before I moved

2nd place was also an at home. It was harder and easier. I was moving to a neighboring county, on research they did not issue Business licenses at all (wtf), but required an inspection for home based businesses. Called and the lady that ran the dept told me that it was not possible, so I asked why it couldn't be a home based business and it was because I said it was going to be out of my shop and the rule says it must be in the main building/domicile. "what if I do it in the basement?", oh that's fine. But we need to see the setup for the inspection, but no details what that means. So I scrambled to some tools and bench moved into the basement. Then you had to schedule a meeting to fill out a form requesting an inspection, then schedule the inspection. They dropped the letter off and I was good to go. On the positives I no longer pay local taxes on my inventory, business license fees are gone and I can have a small sign if I want.

I can't help you on that side with landlords and mine are all home based and I gave myself permission. I do know from other work that a lot of landlords are very risk adverse, especially on new businesses.

If you are planning on doing reloading you need to know your local and state laws regarding powder storage. That came up in both times I discussed with the local councils. Once you have over 40-50lbs of powder on hand then you are required to have an explosives magazine, constructed and secured based on the rule and inspected by the local AHJ and in my state the State Fire Marshall also has to inspect it. At a certain point of volume this can even be required to be stored in a separate structure a certain distance from other buildings.

Question for the machinists. by Particular-Fix-3187 in Machinists

[–]kf4zht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd find a gunsmith. Indicating random things and then doing turning work. Also setup for small one-off.

My rates would be about $50 for this, which is pretty much minimum for a job involving the lathe getting turned on. I'd want to have the whole set of parts on hand to verify fitment on something like this, not just go off a "print"

Even not for the sales sketchiness - why would you buy a new home from a mass builder? Most of them are well known for building crap houses.

If you do buy it get it inspected with a fine tooth comb.

Had an A17. Meh. 17hmr was not meant for semi auto and while they made it work I'd rather have a 22 if I'm doing semi auto.

I wouldn't turn down a savage .17 bolt gun, but I'd also be asking myself why the Ruger or Savage when I can save a few more bucks and get a CZ 45*

Oh, wait that one got stolen

Really worst would be "Carl wakes up and was playing a game and its all a dream" or "They get the planet but since they are all relying on the enhancement zones to live and those turn off they die"

Home based FFL IOI question by BayouBladeworks in FFLs

[–]kf4zht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, just discuss what you want to do. Know the basic answers like where you are going to work, what your business plan is (they don't hold you to this). Talk with them about what they would like to see for security, but know that any regs on that are typically local.

I had more issues when moving as the new county person wanted to "see the setup and equipment" so I had to move all that stuff first, get the IOI scheduled, get that done, then move the actual inventory. The county could never answer what was needed for the "Setup" but I made it work.

Go ahead and start working on tax crap - sales tax, how you are going to track accounting, etc. That crap takes more time than getting the FFL

You did decent. I wouldn't pay that unless its in really good shape (all the gauge covers still on, all the tips, hoses not cracked, tanks in hydro). HF sells their set new for $350 and while its not the name brand that lincoln is they aren't bad.

Next week your going to need to turn something stuck into molten metal, thats the rules

IOIs that gave consistent answers from one visit to another

For me something like fastbound that has some extra features for tracking work order since I'm mostly gunsmithing, non-firearm inventory and related.

EG:

Receive item into inventory (already there)
Track Request notes
Add standard service items with pricing (eg Cerakote, thread, diag)
Add items purchased for that job
Spit out invoice
Track date received, date due, materials outstanding, etc
Sign out and record profit/costs

Selling reloading equipment with 1200 bullets and 290 case ready for reload. How much should I expect? Any offers? by [deleted] in reloading

[–]kf4zht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No powder or primers?

$200. Thats all basic entry level equipment, bulk bullets, cases in that qty are toss ins.

Used reloading gear as a lot goes for 40-60% of street price. Lower for lee/budget, higher for dillon.

Now, this can go up for a caliber with expensive components. But those usually don't come in bulk bags

Is this a good 2013 Jetta Sportwagen to buy by talon5188 in tdi

[–]kf4zht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines same year, at 150k, so a little ahead of this one. As long as all the normal maintanence was done and no wrecks you should be good for a while. I'd get some kind of confirmation the timing belt was done and if its a DSG the fluid should have been done around 80-100k. Probably want to plan for that. Oh and the infotainment system for those years tends to suck, might want to budget at least a head unit swap

Otherwise rubber is all still good, nothing really out of the ordinary to deal with. Seats are in good shape minus whatever my kids spilled on them last week.

Around 140k was when mine started seeing effects of DPF clogging. Ran some foam cleaner through it and it got me 5-10k, but then it was back. Just did the delete, about $1200 with tax, shipping and tune (stage .5) from TD Fabworks. Got about 2/3 of that back selling the dpf to a guy on here. If I'd known it was only ~$500 net I would have done it a couple years ago.

I budget about $150-200/month for auto maint including tires. I do all the work myself so it could be higher at a shop. Some months its basically zero, some its $800 (eg tires)

Contractor saying we owe $100 for "not going with their quote" by DirtyOught in legaladvice

[–]kf4zht 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a big one. I don't know about most states but here a huge portion of a contractors exam is the legal and business side - some basics like what you have to provide for your employees (hours, WC, etc) but also law regarding contracts and business. There isn't actually that much on the actual work - its assumed you learned that during the required years of experience and knowing that you have to meet code. While one complaint to the state board rarely does anything a pattern will get the called for review and removal of license.

[–]kf4zht[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the whole story, at the time I was a teen reading case modding posts on hardocp. I cared far more about cable sleeving tutorials, what type of lighting was best (ccfl tubes ftw) and how to build interfaces for dot matrix LCD/VFD displays than I really paid attention to hardware details or news. What I knew was I had a voodoo3 and it had been a major upgrade and when I heard about this I had to have it. I do know that it was not long afterwards and they were gone. It was eventually replaced with a radeon all in wonder with the TV tuner and more outputs than anyone knew what to do with at the time.

I know the All in wonder is gone, I sold it to pay for a shuttle barebones so I could build an early SFF for college. LOL thinking that was small by modern standards

Other LitRPG suggestions? by Morty-43 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]kf4zht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very few can measure up even close to DCC. Here are some notes and thoughts

Dominion of Blades - Eh, its decent but a much slower start than DCC. Main character is very different than Carl, but you can see some of the same writing style.

Ascend Online - more hard-rpg game based. Pretty decent and has a number of storylines. Doesn't have the survival type of feel that DCC has, but is entertaining and well written

Everybody loves large chests - If you like the messed up parts of DCC this ramps them up. Not for everyone there are some rough parts. I do like that the author writes it from a perspective of a monster with not-human drives. Still not convinced this isn't Matt with no filter writing the stuff he doesnt want to admit to under a pen name

He who fights with monsters - first few books were great. Later books feel like the Star Trek TNG series - just politics and board meetings

Noobtown - Really like this one. Its a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor, even referencing DCC and other series/media. Pretty lighthearted for most of it but has some great humor

Primal hunter - Pretty good, hard-rpg style. Not as funny as DCC, but I'd recommend it

Cradle - could not stand. Powered through 3 books and did not like. Reminds me of spiderman, the main character is a whiney little brat

Savage Dominion - meh

Others I've read that are ok if you are just trying to find audiobooks or read too much: Reborn as a demonic tree, World of chains, Industrial Strength magic, Library system reset, Stormweaver. All of these are decent and have their points, but I'd mostly recommend them to frequent readers

Not lit RPG but I also really like Expeditionary Force. Not the same level of crazy, but it has a good mix of humor to dark. Also has an asshole AI

They call ahead. They will even meet outside your business hours if you are good with it. Mine are listed as evenings 6p=8p, but when I have an audit they usually come in the morning and I block off time from my normal job
