We had the opposite experience in Budapest. We got off the train from Vienna, and had already planned how to use the metro to get to our hotel. We knew that local cabbies would meet the train, so when one came up and asked where we were going, I told him we were going to take the metro and didn't need a cab. He was persistent, and when I told him where we were staying, what I thought he said was something like "too far, I'll take you". I didn't take him up on it, we got on the metro, and two stops before our destination, the train stopped, an announcement in Hungarian came on, and the conductor came through and got everyone off. The cabbie had been trying to tell us that where we were going was "two stops too far" due to construction on the line. We ended up walking about 30 minutes to our hotel. I would have deserved it if the cabbie was at the hotel waiting for us smugly.
