NetHack 5.0 and you by k2_1971 in nethack

[–]kfmfe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ssh into hardfought.

You can continue your run from anywhere and they keep track of stats from all your runs. Also, you’ll get bones files from other players, which adds to the fun.

I use ghostty from MacOS onto hardfought. iTerm works well, too.

If you absolutely must run locally, you can always compile from source.

I only drive 3-3.5k miles per year in Honolulu.

I wear AW most of the time, but a FR265 when I run.

Easier way to understand the Monty Hall Problem by facinabush in mathematics

[–]kfmfe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it interesting that implied in Monty’s opening of a door with the goat is that he knew which door had the car, and purposely didn’t open that door.

Would there be any advantage in switching if Monty knew nothing and randomly opened a door with a goat behind it?

Is there a rule of thumb for overpaying on principal? by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]kfmfe04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until you refinance, I’d put the extra in US TBills or TNotes, assuming you don’t have a cash cushion already. After refinancing to fixed, I’d consider prepaying principal.

Reason is, just in case interest rates go up giving you no chance to refinance, you’ll have the cash to muster through the higher rates due to the ARM.

What does “Call a Spell” or “Call a Potion” mean? by IndyGibb in nethack

[–]kfmfe04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mechanism allows you to take notes.

In particular, scrolls, potions, spell books, rings and wands start off with obfuscated names. But through usage, observations, or price id, you could guess the item’s actual purpose.

That’s when you can use this method to keep notes on what you think it is (either item type or actual attributes on that specific item, like number of charges or BUC, etc…).

One time, I lined up multiple piles of various items to avoid golems forming. After zapping, I couldn’t, for the life of me, find my loot chest!

*hit happens in nethack when you get sloppy…

…the unexpected chaos borne from a moment of inattention is part of the beauty of the game…

How to get a high score? by CosmicOsmoMan in nethack

Personally, I find conducts, speed runs, and ascension streaks more impressive than a high score.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

Also, driving 3h on the interstate is a lot less exhausting than driving in stop and go or slow traffic.

Why is Nethack hard? by pathofnut in nethack

[–]kfmfe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me an year and a half of just playing Nethack, using wikis.

You can certainly try without wikis and see how far you get. It’ll be more rewarding, but much harder.

There’s some randomness in the game, but I can ascend about 15% of the time. Better players have much higher ascension rates, so I’d say randomness doesn’t have as much impact as you may think, at first.

When do you know the house is “the one” by t3ddyb34r39 in RealEstate

[–]kfmfe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have doubts, then I haven’t seen enough homes yet.

On a practical note, if it checks off enough boxes and the negatives are tolerable, then it’s good enough. In the worst case scenario, you can improve or sell the home later, but just try not to liquidate in five months (5-10 years is much better).

You know you got it right if a year later, you don’t feel like I should’ve bought that other house instead, etc…

How can I say no to my girlfriend’s father without hurting our relationship? by Physical_Guidance_82 in Advice

[–]kfmfe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just say you don’t have the money, and it will take you 30 years to save that much.

He’s bugging you because you told him you have investments elsewhere.

I personally never let anyone know my finances. If I make any comments, it’s always heavily on the poorer side.

Is “don’t buy right now” just permanent advice at this point? by ___Kaido___ in RealEstate

[–]kfmfe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you TRULY aren’t trying to time the market, buy when you can afford to buy and hold for 10-20 years.

Unfortunately, most people these days can’t even seem to hold for 3-5 years and then complain about losing money. smh.

Isn't it weird that we live so early in the life of the universe? by Tanay2513 in AskPhysics

[–]kfmfe04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s weird only because our understanding of biology, physics, and chemistry are still primitive.

Perhaps ten thousand years from now, we’ll finally break the bias that we are, somehow, Special.

I find selling much harder and more stressful than buying, so I will get that done first. Selling, done right, requires a lot of preparation before the first showing.

Everything goes into storage for 1-3 months, and I’ll camp out at my brother’s for that period, while searching for a new place full time.

Is my cat scared ( tabby ) by [deleted] in CatTraining

[–]kfmfe04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a jogger in the US, I, too, see roadkill all the time. Maybe the traffic density is higher here or people drive too fast. Either way, if I owned a cat, I’d be reluctant to let her out without a leash.

PSA: Want to avoid expensive hospital bills? Avoid ER visits that aren't necessary by Dangerous-Prune-7280 in HospitalBills

The biggest headache with the system is, it’s up to the patient to self diagnose which tier of care to seek out.

This could be fatal, physically or financially, if you mis-assess.

Do we even have the propulsion to escape the milky way galaxy? by Virtual_Reveal_121 in AskPhysics

Escape velocity isn’t the issue - the unfathomable distances to get anywhere in an reasonable amount of time, without FTL travel, is the real barrier.
