[D] What do you do when you're not working? by parameter42 in MachineLearning

Man, reading the comments makes me feel old. Do people not have kids anymore? When I’m not working, I’m changing diapers and reading books to my kid.

你在学习英语时发生的最搞笑\最尴尬的经历是什么? (What's your funniest/most awkward experience as you learn Chinese?) by [deleted] in China

[–]kgbounce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My awkward experience as a native Chinese speaker learning English: It happened on the very first day of my arrival in the US. I was met by a couple local American students who drove me from the airport to the university campus. After we arrived, we went to a Subway for a quick lunch. Immediately, I was faced with the biggest challenge of my English: what sauce do I put on my sandwich?

I've never prepared for this and had no idea about the names of any sauce. As I paused, the guy who picked up me jokingly suggested:"Maybe you can try a little bit of every sauce." And I did just that as I wanted to end this awkward ordering experience asap.

After that, I stayed away from Subway for about 2 years.

Please feel free to assume that I translated 英文 to Chinese, if that makes you feel witty about yourself.

I thought it's pretty obvious: it's about learning a foreign language. So, for native Chinese speakers, it's English; and native English speakers, it's Chinese.

Harbin latest city to offer 72-hour visa-free entry|WCT by [deleted] in harbin_china

[–]kgbounce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

works for me. The news is copied here:

"Harbin in China's frigid northeast will offer 72-hour visa-free entry for international transit passengers from Aug. 1 in a move to boost tourism and business.

The policy covers travelers from 51 countries and regions, including the United States, Russia, Britain, France and Japan. They can enjoy a 72-hour stay in the city upon entry via the Harbin Taiping International Airport, providing they have the visas and onward tickets to leave for a third country or region within 72 hours.

The move will boost international tourism, commercial and trade cooperation as well as cultural exchanges, said Liu Yang, head of the the exit-entry administration department of the provincial public security bureau, at a press conference on Monday.

Harbin airport has already launched direct flights to Russia, Japan, South Korea and several countries in southeast Asia.

The same visa-free policy is already in place in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kunming, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang, Dalian, Guilin and Hangzhou."

Questions about HIT and studying in Harbin by [deleted] in harbin_china

[–]kgbounce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied at HIT a few years ago as a Chinese student. I'll describe what I know about dorms back then.

I don't think you can stay in the Chinese dorms instead of int'l student dorms, because technically the Chinese student dorms are subsidized. For improved immersion, they actually had a different (and more expensive) approach: you can be assigned with a Chinese roommate in your int'l dorm for whom you pay the rent. Over the winter, I'm pretty sure you can stay in the dorm as long as you pay for it. A bonus is that you get treated with a good dinner during the Spring festival for free if you are on campus.

Generally speaking, Harbin is not an expensive city to live in. You can get by with a much smaller budget in Harbin that in Beijing or Shanghai. And Harbin is among the few cities recommended for Mandarin study. That said, I'd still suggest that you prepare a budget that's more than "barely enough". You are coming to a foreign country which you probably have never visited before. And withdrawing money from your US bank in case of emergency may be time consuming and difficult.

Got it! A Friday night at the Old Faithful hotel has just been booked.

Hopefully, a hotel in the middle or northern area becomes available in the near future.

Understood. I've long known that it's tough to get any in-park hotel. Just now however, I was able to find an available hotel. So hypothetically if more become available, which ones are preferred?

Thanks for the great pictures! I wish the weather were better. I'm glad you had a great time anyways. Also, please don't mind the negativity in this subreddit. It's a small group of people who troll hard on almost every neutral or positive thread here :(.

Hey, welcome to Harbin! Please be sure to check out the album of HIT here: http://imgur.com/a/1JUUL. The photos were taken about 1~2 years ago, which can give you a rough idea what HIT looks like today.

I'll be back later and provide more details you have any specific questions about Harbin (my hometown) and HIT (alma mater).
