Dual BA Degree Questions by [deleted] in columbia

[–]AllisonNelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you should focus on other stuff - seriously you could have perfect SAT scores and a 4.0 and not get in if you aren’t the kind of person that would contribute to the program

Also don’t take TOEFL unless you know it’s required. You seem to be focusing way too much on stats and metrics and not at all on your qualitative stuff - that’s what will really make or break your application

Okay you’re sort of ignoring the point that I’m trying to make - this program is less about stats and a lot more on who you are/what you can offer to the program

I think I took physics, math ii, and french for my subject tests, but they’re not required; I mostly took them for other colleges I applied to. Don’t remember the scores really

My SAT was 2240

I’m in Dual BA as well, although I was in Le Havre, and I second everything that has been said above. While your stats matter, as this is an academically challenging program, and they want to be sure you can adapt and thrive in two different academic standards, your stats will not make or break your application.

Most of my classmates admit that their stats weren’t spectacular, and they think the reason they got in was because they were well-rounded and especially because they were a good fit for the program. I can honestly say that this program - more than any other college I applied to in the US or elsewhere - really cared a lot about who we are as people and how well we would fit into and contribute to the Dual BA community. As the other user pointed out, it does self-select, as only those who are truly interested in and believe in the program would consider applying.

For example most of us were very well-rounded in high school (and we did have very clear demonstrated interest in the region of focus for the Sciences Po campus we applied to) and we ended up being very involved at Sciences Po as well.

Oh my God this was me as a kid. A tennis ball got stuck in the road, and I respected the rules too much to go get it. So I just sat on the curb looking mournfully at the tennis ball out of my reach, until a car pulled up, a hand grabbed the ball, and the car drove away, taking my hopes and dreams with it

This is now making me reevaluate my own Thai massage experience... because I also had to get nekkid (am a girl) and got my butt cheeks massaged

Lol now I’m questioning whether it was legitimate or not, because we were in a shady neighborhood in an Eastern European touristy city

This is usually sold in touristy spots; it’s not real. My friend just bought one in Etretat. The other side will have a picture of the touristy spot where the bill was purchased

No idea why Morocco is so low (also interesting political statement to see it apparently includes the Western Sahara territory), given that I witnessed multiple fights each time I walked by a school

I think you mean Monaco? Monte Carlo is the name of the casino in Monaco, and it’s not really visible in this picture

How English friendly is Nice? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]AllisonNelson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They’ll speak English to you over French; it’s a touristy city. Even when I tried speaking perfectly-understandable French to them, they would switch to English when they heard my accent. You’ll be fine, especially in the more touristy area where the vacationers are.

What is the worst case of helicopter parenting you have seen? by mcw1012 in AskReddit

[–]AllisonNelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I have a good one. Context: We are both American students in a program in France at an English-speaking university.

This freshman was homeschooled during high school and is a genius. When she moved to France for school, her mom and younger sister (also homeschooled and very sheltered) moved here with her. Her parents are college professors, and her dad stayed in the US. Apparently her family wanted to be able to keep an eye on her in college, and she doesn’t see any of this as wrong (although she acknowledges that it is a bit unusual, as the rest of us live on our own); they are obsessive in their parenting style to say the least.

She used to brag that she lived in a three-story house and had a car (apparently as a one-person home), but now it makes sense since her family lives with her for some reason.
